Here are the weekly Nielsen ratings, by number of viewers.
Week after week I post these numbers, and one thing is always abundantly clear: NBC really doesn't have any big, consistent hits on its hands. Sure, Heroes sneaks in once in a while, maybe a Law and Order: SVU here and there or a Deal Or No Deal, but the top 20 is always filled with reality shows, the CSI shows, and doctor shows. I'm looking at this list, and if you take out The World Series - which I watched only because I'm a Red Sox fan - I only watch one of these shows: 60 Minutes. I'm either really out of touch or there are better shows on TV right now (I always fear the former but pray for the latter).
And can someone tell me what Extreme Makeover: Home Edition means? Is there an edition outside, or in space?

FOX is the only network who seems to have two seasons every year, doesn't it? You have the fall, when the baseball playoffs and World Series wreak havoc with the network's primetime lineup, then the new year happens and everything starts anew with
American Idol and
24; all of a sudden, the "fourth network" becomes a ratings juggernaut.
It's something that FOX Entertainment president Peter Liguori is concerned about, and he addressed it at his TCA session this morning. He almost sounded like a victim, held hostage by the sports' division's suckage of time during the month of October and hamstrung by what it forces him to do. It strikes me as a bit disingenuous, because FOX paid a lot of money for the playoffs, and it was their decision to air so many games. Anyway, Liguori seemed almost happy that the network, who lost the division round and one LCS round, will broadcast less games this fall.

I'm courting trouble here after the fine whine I uncorked last night about
my distaste for night football, but I'm going to say something else that will make all male fans of this blog question my gender and ask if I buy my Summer's Eve in Spring Fresh or Potpourri scents:
Why are networks still scared of the World Series?
Except for a couple of shows, everything is a rerun tonight, supposedly because the competition from what was going to be Game 5 (but now is Game 4 because of last night's rainout) was going to be too fierce. But the ratings give a different picture.

Fox is changing up its schedule once the World Series is over. It is sending
Vanished to 8 pm on Fridays, the place where television shows go to die. And,
Justice is moving from Wednesdays to Mondays at 9 pm. Fox obviously hopes the large
Prison Break audience will stick around for the new Jerry Bruckheimer procedural drama which has consistently placed 4th among the networks on Wednesdays. Tuesdays will switch up just a bit, with
Standoff moving to the 8 pm hour and
House moving up to 9 pm. On Wednesdays,
Bones will remain at 8 pm with new game show,
The Rich List, following 9 pm. The changes begin on October 23rd.

'Til Death will stay off the air for an extra week after the World Series because star Brad Garrett is holding up production. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Garrett was very unhappy with the latest script. That's actually a good reason to postpone a show... to make the script better. Unfortunately for Brad, it might not matter that much. The show is taking a beating on Thursday nights against
Survivor and
Ugly Betty. It'll be interesting to see that episode when it does get made, to see what Garrett considers a 'good' script.

As per the norm of FOX over the last few years, the fourth network (which has been around for almost, gasp, 20 years), will jump out of the starting gate earlier than the other networks with fall season premieres. This is done to give new and returning shows time to build up steam before Major League Baseball takes the stage in early October with playoffs and the World Series.
The new season will begin on Monday, August 21st with the second season premiere of Prison Break and the introduction of the new drama Vanished. On Wednesday, August 30th, Bones will enter its second season, along with new lawyer-drama Justice. Duets, the series that pairs singing stars with celebrities outside the music world, will have its 2-hour premiere a day later. House will step into its third season on Tuesday, September 5th.
The complete listing of premieres can be viewed at Zap2it.com. Save a copy of it, folks, because I'm sure the schedule will change during the first week of premieres, then again after the World Series, then again during the NFL post-season, and then once more when the juggernaut we know as American Idol premieres in January. By the time 2007 rolls around you may just see some of the shows now listed as entries in our 'Short-Lived Shows' category.

VH1 is hosting two tests tonight on its website for a
new game show,
The World Series of Pop Culture. At 7 pm or 10 pm (ET), you can log on to
this website and take the pop culture
quiz. There are six sections, with 10 questions each. You have six minutes to complete each section, but only the
fastest to answer will make it through to the interview session with the producers. From that pool, VH1 will choose
three people to be on a Wild Card team when it hosts the pop culture tournament in New York City on the weekend of
April 28-30.
I took the sample quiz and it was a breeze, with lots of references to '80s and early '90s
television shows and movies such as
Ferris Bueller's Day Off,
The Cosby Show, and
Seinfeld.
Good luck!
[Thanks,
Lee!]
