If I were in charge of an American television network, I would be brainstorming ways to get Americans excited about soccer. The ratings for World Cup are out of this world. The average television audience, worldwide, for the month-long tournament was 93 million viewers for each match. 93 MILLION. And more than 5.6 BILLION (yes, that's a 'B') watched matches live in 54 global markets. The final match between Italy and France garnered an estimated 284 million viewers.
Reuters compares those numbers to America's biggest sporting event, the Super Bowl, and determines that World Cup numbers are equivalent to 64 Super Bowls. Mama mia!

Drew Carey is hosting a new show on The Travel Channel called
Drew Carey's Sporting Adventures. The first episode aired last month (did anybody see it?). The hook for the show is that the comedian travels the world to teach us about international sports, beer and fight songs. It also looks like he gained back that weight he lost.
After seeing a promo for the show, I went to the
Travel Channel's fan website to learn more about it. I discovered links to video, blogs and photos but none of them actually feature Drew Carey. The blog is from one of the producers and the behind-the-scenes video is voiced and edited by a cameraman. WTF? Where's Drew? Phoning it in. That's where he is.

I don't really follow sports, and I definitely don't keep track of what's going on as far as the World Cup is concerned, but a
couple blogs are mentioning a recent scuffle between Zinedine Zidane and Marco Materazzi that culminated in Zidane headbutting Materazzi and sending him flailing to the ground. If you look at the lovely GIF of the incident, it looks as if Materazzi is actually being headbutted in the chin and neck, which means Zidane's aim isn't very good. Speculation is
abound over just what set Zidane off, but apparently it had something to do with a racist comment that was made by Materazzi. All I know is that I've never understood headbutting as a form of fighting, as it would seem to do just as much damage to you as your opponent. This is why soccer players should carry knives ... wait, no.

"
Sheikh's Feet Under": Big news! Abu Mousab al-Zarqawi (aka Stinky) has been found dead. When Donald Rumsfeld made the announcement, he sounded a little choked up because it's the first thing he's done right. The news was accepted quietly, but the press conference in Iraq was met with cheers. Correspondent Samantha Bee explained that the death of Zarqawi and eight other martyrs is going to make for a sucky day for virgin wranglers in Heaven. Some of the lower ranking guys probably won't get full complement... the cherry orchard may have a few bruised fruits... some of those girls might be whores.
