Now that the big finale is in the books, and the right chef won, the fine folks over at Top Chef HQ have some time on their hands. It appears they'll be spending it getting going on their new spinoff, Top Chef Jr. (not an official title). According to the press release, the series comes about because Top Chef is the "number one food show on cable." I think that is a point that might be contested by someone at Food Network, but I do agree, it is my favorite of the cooking based shows.
The show will have an eight episode run and feature teens (13-16) in the familiar competitions to see if they are junior top chefs. Bravo calls it a natural expansion of their food domain and says it will be fun for the whole family. I can't help but think of Trading Spaces: Boys vs Girls. It was a fine imitation of the original Trading Spaces, but didn't hold up among the parent show's fans. And that's exactly what I would expect from Top Chef Jr.

Bravo is
capitalizing on the success of its reality shows by moving beyond the small screen. Thanks to several new business partnerships, the cable network is extending the
Top Chef brand by offering a
Top Chef cruise, cooking classes, and a calendar. There are also plans for a fitness DVD starring
Work Out's Jackie Warner.
Former
Top Chef contestants will participate in these new ventures and take part in a nationwide tour as well. The twenty-city tour begins on May 18 in New Orleans. Fans can meet the contestants, get gourmet cooking tips, and watch cooking demonstrations. The
Work Out DVD is available on demand on Exercise TV (for free) and can be purchased online and in stores on May 20.

Project Runway aside, Bravo is obsessed with the SoCal good life. The network that brings you
Work Out,
The Real Housewives of Orange County and
Million Dollar Listing doesn't think you're getting quite enough of a glimpse into what Botox-ed blondes and metrosexual old-timers are doing with their free time so
they've teamed up with Snackaholic Productions to bring you
Welcome to the Parker, a one-hour reality show focused on the staff and guests of the posh
Parker Palm Springs hotel.
Shooting on the series begins this month. The show will premiere next year. I'm glad to see that Bravo has cornered the market on wish-fulfillment reality programming, but does America really give a crap about a hotel that has a "manifesto" which reads, "We believe in the American country club experience: mixed doubles, a long steam, and a stiff cocktail?" Did they hire the editors of
Esquire to come up with that? Don't get me wrong. I love
Esquire, and heck, the hotel looks like a marvel of mid-50s, modernist design. I'm just not sure that I want to see any country club on TV that doesn't have Bill Murray hunting for gophers on its greens.

On the cover: a sci-fi "preview," with covers featuring the original Star Trek, Smallville, Battlestar Galactica, and Lost. The Trek preview is about J.J. Abrams big screen movie, but I think it's just another excuse to put the show (and Lost) on the damn cover, and have yet another multi-cover issue.
- Matt Roush reviews the summer shows Work Out, Life on Mars, Inspector Lewis, Who Wants To Be A Superhero, and Walter Cronkite: Witness To History. He likes them all except one. Can you guess which one?
- An interview with Brotherhood's Jason Isaacs.
- In the print edition: a Q & A with Matt Dallas from Kyle XY; a guest column from comic book legend Stan Lee; behind the scenes of the CMA Music Festival; and find out what would have happened if Threshold hadn't been canceled!
