This review is for the Canadian DVD release, which has season 1 (6 episodes) and season 2 (22 episodes). The American version only includes the first season (though the American release does have two things missing from the Canadian version: an interview with Susan Saint James and writer Bill Persky, and a gag reel).
Kate & Allie is one of my favorite shows. Yeah, I know, what's a 41 year-old guy doing loving some show about two divorced women raising their families together? The show was not only well-written and cast (Susan Saint James, Jane Curtin, Allison Smith, Ari Meyers, and Fred Koehler), but it had a lot of smart things to say about family, relationships, and living in New York City (the show was one of the few sitcoms actually filmed in New York, at the Ed Sullivan Theater).

Now that
NBC and
CBS have us all excited about its fall season, it's time to move along to the screener DVDs we've been receiving from ABC. While we're not allowed to technically "review" each new show, we can give you a short preview with our initial thoughts.
For ABC, we're covering:
The Knights of Prosperity (formerly
Let's Rob...)
, Help Me Help You, The Nine, Big Day, Notes from the Underbelly, Six Degrees, Ugly Betty, and Men in Trees. (We'll do a Part 2 of the ABC previews once we receive the remaining shows.)

Lots of casting news
today in
The
Hollywood Reporter.
Dylan McDermott has joined the cast of the ABC
drama,
A House Divided. It's about a rift between a midwestern farming community and the federal government. I
wish I knew more because, wow, that sounds like a snoozer. Sarah Clarke (aka 'Nina' on
24) is also part of the
cast. She plays the wife of the lead character, which might just be McDermott.
Wendie Malick, of
Just Shoot Me and
Jake in Progress, has
been cast in the ABC comedy pilot,
A Day in the Life. The show is about a young couple's wedding day, from
different points of view (I imagine it'll have to advance past the wedding day). Malick plays the mother of the
bride.

When this show first started getting promoted around this time last year, ABC billed
it as kind of a male response to Sex and the City. They used some cheesy tag along the lines of
"same city, different sex." Needless to say, I thought it sounded ridiculous and chose to ignore it. After
watching last night's episode, I kind of wish I hadn't because John Stamos was pretty good and I even laughed a few
times which is rare for sitcoms these days, save for How I Met..., AD, and The Office.

Last month I listed the
sexiest TV women over 40,
and there were a lot of them; both the Honorable Mentions and the comments indicated that I missed a good number of
mature women that would make hearts go aquiver. When I first made the list, I was going to put
anyone over 40
on it, but so many sexy women over 50 and over 60 presented themselves, that I decided to make 3 different lists (which
also that makes 2 less ideas I have to come up with for The Five column).
So, after the jump, I'll give you a
list of sexy women over 50 that have been on TV the last few years. They prove that getting older isn't the end of a
career; in fact, many of the women on the list look better than they did when they were younger. Whether they got that
way through genetics or through "help" isn't for me to judge, since there is enough
terrible plastic surgery around for me to be able to appreciate women
whose work is more on the "natural-looking" side.
