They're not actually playing their characters from Reno 911, but actors Tom Lennon and Ben Garrant made a hilarious video for Declare Yourself, a campaign designed to get eighteen-year-olds to vote.
Lennon and Garrant play two older people telling young people that while the entertainment industry cares about their opinions when it comes to music, movies and television, nobody really cares who they vote for when it comes to the presidential election. It's a funny bit of reverse psychology, but I think it might be a little too clever. The sarcastic point they make actually seems valid in many ways. Should you vote for the prez when you know more about Paris Hilton than you do about issues that actual affect you? The answer is no, I probably shouldn't.
Still, I'd like to see more funny videos like this one that encourage kids to vote without endorsing one specific candidate or political party.

Each year, television production studios send out oodles (that's the word I use when I don't have an exact figure) of DVDs to voters for Emmy awards. This year, CBS Paramount Television went green with its Emmy campaign. It's all explained on
this website, but CBS has essentially decided to save the planet by not creating a bunch of DVDs that will just go in the trash and has, instead, directed voters to watch episodes online.
That means we can watch 'em, too.
Go here to check out which episodes of CBS Paramount (different from the CBS network) were submitted for Emmy consideration. The online video quality looks and sounds great. Among the contenders are a
CSI episode with Liev Schreiber,
Criminal Minds with James van der Beek, and an episode of
Jericho, which the CBS network
recently canceled.

(
S01E11) While I was watching the scenes with Nora working at Ojai, I kind of hated this show, and hated myself for watching it. Even though I knew that I would be tuning in week after week regardless of whether or not I was reviewing it. But then it got better.
So, what do you think? Should Rob Lowe's character, Senator Dreamy McCallister, be excused for voting against gay marriage when the measure wasn't going to pass anyway? Was it okay for him not to make a stand, when he had an education measure he wanted to pass? I'm going to have to say no. He admits that he regrets the vote, but he also wanted Kitty to come and work for him. And he is good at getting what he wants. But low and behold, he has a cute gay brother. Oh please no. Oh please no.

PBS is cautiously venturing into the world of online television programming. The network will ring in the New Year by premiering three pilots of new shows on its website, and letting viewers help decide which pilot gets a series order. Staffers are dubbing it "PBS Science Idol", although the voting doesn't necessarily determine which pilot gets a series... it's just being taken into consideration in the decision. The pilots will also begin airing on PBS on January 3rd, and viewers will be encouraged to go to the website to voice their opinions. Each episode will be available for viewing on PBS.org or for free on iTunes starting January 1. Each pilot will air on three Wednesdays, starting on January 3rd at 8 pm.
The three pilots are all science-related:

Some quick thoughts on the TV election coverage last night:
1. CNN's coverage was annoying. First, they have that giant screen that looks like a cross between Best Buy and Dr. No's hideout, and they also have Wolf Blitzer as the host. Why does CNN put so much faith in him, with his odd tone and word phrasings? He and Jeff Greenfield looked so ridiculous standing up the whole night, standing in front of the giant screen trying to talk about the results. There were a couple of times where they literally bumped into each other, and Wolf had to tell Greenfield to stand behind him. I felt sorry for Greenfield, really. And their expert guests (James Carville, Paul Begala, J.C. Watts, and William Bennett), when they weren't on the air, were just stuck in the background in chairs. They looked like they were taking phone calls during a PBS telethon.

Ex-CBS newsman will be the guest tonight on Comedy Central's live Indecision 2006 special at 11pm. The show will be co-hosted by Daily Show host Jon Stewart and Colbert Report host Stephen Colbert. A quote from Rather, from the article linked above:
"J. Stewart and company offered the chance, and I've taken it...I don't do comedy, I do politics, which sometimes is one in the same."
J. Stewart? That seems like an odd way to say his name. Was this an e-mail interview? Even if it was, does it really take longer to write three characters (Jon) than two (J.)? But I digress...

On
The Colbert Report, there's a recurring segment called "Better Know A District", during which Stephen Colbert interviews a congressperson from whatever district he happens to be covering. Note that it was during this segment that Colbert recently
prodded at Bob Wexler to say, "I enjoy cocaine because it's a fun thing to do", causing a bit of a controversy among the media. Anyway, Thursday night's "BKAD" was amazing. Stephen paid a visit to the District of Columbia and spoke with delegate
Eleanor Holmes Norton, who was clearly not in on the joke. Stephen insisted that DC isn't part of the US, rudely harped on the fact that Norton doesn't vote, and even accused her of undressing him with her eyes. Ohh, NAILED! This is one of the best "BKAD"s ever and is definitely worth a watch. Catch the video after the jump!

(S06E05) Sideshow Bob: No children have ever meddled with the Republican party and lived to tell about it.
One of the benefits of being a satirical show like The Simpsons is that for the most part, the gags remain somewhat timeless. I say "somewhat" because once in awhile there will be moments that really date that particular episode. In this episode it's a reference to Rush Limbaugh in the guise of Springfield's loudmouth celebrity radio yakker Birch Barlow, author of Only Turkeys Have Left Wings. I know Rush is still around, but I think it's safe to say he's no longer in his heyday.

Emmy voting began on June 4th, which explains all the
Battlestar Galactica advertisements I've seen all over the web on industry pages lately.
SciFi is campaigning pretty heavily for Emmy nominations for its highest-rated show. It has shipped the entire season of
Battlestar Galactica on DVD to voting members of the academy (supposedly, some of those DVDs are for sale now on EBay).
The Los Angeles Times website,
The Envelope, has a
full list of television shows that are campaigning for Emmys by purchasing ads in industry magazines, on websites, and by sending DVDs to members. Interestingly, canceled shows like
Alias and
Arrested Development haven't even bothered to ask 'for your consideration' this year.
Emmy nominees will be announced July 6.

Now that we're five seasons into
American Idol, NBC has realized that it's a
ratings powerhouse. And
it wants in on some of that action. So, NBC is bringing another European singing contest across the pond (
American
Idol was based on the British
Pop Idol). This time, it's the
Eurovision Song Contest, which
launched the careers of Celine Dion and ABBA. Yeah, it's been around for a bit. 50 years, to be exact.
NBC
will begin its search for talent online to find singers from each state. I'm not sure if it's the same thing as
this online talent competition
that NBC has planned for this summer because NBC does plan to air most of the
Eurovision Song Contest on its
network. Just like on
Idol, voting is up to the viewers. Let's just hope they don't make Celine a host.
