Subtle Subtitles: The MTV Video Music Awards

If you haven't seen our game before, we give you a picture from a recent episode of a TV series and you provide the caption!

Last week's winner is Teresa with this: "When I asked you to brings snacks to the party I meant chips."

This week's photo is that odd picture from The MTV VMA's last weekend:

The Jay Leno Show: Jerry Seinfeld (series premiere)

The Jay Leno Show
(S01E01)
A lot is riding on this little NBC pet project. Like one-third of their primetime lineup. But despite all their promises and promotions that this was a comedy show, vastly different than Jay Leno's work on The Tonight Show, I saw virtually the same exact show on a different set. That's not necessarily a bad thing if you're NBC. Leno was incredibly successful for a long time on that show. Just call it what it is.

The promise that it would stay topical was brought to fruition. In the opening monologue, just like those Tonight Show monologues of yore, he drops a joke right away about the situation last night at the Video Music Awards involving Kanye West and Taylor Swift. Conveniently, Kanye was a booked guest tonight, as well, so with a little shuffling, he wound up on the chair next to Leno to talk about it.

And now, a baffling picture from last night's VMAs

VMAs
I think the last time I actually cared about MTV was around 1991, so I'm not really invested in the latest Kanye West drama/hype that happened at last night VMAs. But I do think this picture was bizarre enough to post. It pretty much confirms that this is a world I have nothing in common with anymore. Thankfully.

Britney will be at the VMAs

Britney Spears Rolling Stone coverIt looks like after some divisiveness on the subject (including a report confirming her non-appearance), Britney Spears will in fact be making an appearance at the 25th MTV Video Music Awards this coming Sunday in Los Angeles. Britney has been nominated 16 times for VMAs but never won a Moon Man.

This year she has three nominations. With that, I don't know why anybody would think she wouldn't show up. I realize that many thought her last VMA appearance/performance was a trainwreck, but look at what she was going through at the time.

Britney does not have a performance scheduled and I would guess that her appearance will likely be more demure (if MTV is capable of such a thing). I presume she'll just be accepting the award (I think she'll win something. It would be a good career boost. Even Scorsese won an award eventually). Of course, I could be complete wrong. Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of MTV executives?

My question is: will Britney's appearance at the VMA's make you more likely to tune in?

Proof that The Real World caused the downfall of MTV

MTV logoI'm one of the many people who laments the "channel drift" that has affected MTV. A network that started out as, well, "music television" has clearly become "anything but music television." There's even a graph now on GraphJam the depicts how The Real World caused the downfall of MTV. The graph shows how the airtime for music videos has decreased as The Real World grew in popularity. Perhaps it should also measure how the cast of The Real World became more attractive and subsequently less intelligent.

The graph posits that by 2010 music videos will be nonexistent on the channel. Also, interesting is the rise of what the graph calls simply "other crap" that coincides with the rise of shows like The Real World and Road Rules. I assume "other crap" refers to shows like The Hills, My Super Sweet Sixteen, and Made -- shows that have replaced music videos in primetime (and replaced music videos with their incessant reruns in daytime).

VMAs go back to L.A.

MTV has decided that after a ten-year absence from the west coast, the Video Music Awards will be held this year in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be held on Sunday September 7th at the Paramount Pictures lot in Hollywood.

What? No Kodak Theatre? No Nokia Theatre? So, why the choice to hold the ceremony at a Hollywood studio lot? Entertainment Weekly says, "Expect executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic to make use of many of Paramount's stages, rooftops, and camera-ready city streets for the star-studded show, which will only air once in its original incarnation."

Stump the King - The VMAs

I want my VIDEOSLet me be the 500th person to say this year's Video Music Awards sucked.

I know I'm not breaking any ground by calling attention to the lamest performance ever starring Britney Spears but there was a lot more wrong with this show than just one bad performance.

How about the multiple parties? How did that serve the show? All it seemed to do was give everyone an excuse to party before the show was over and add to the usual technical problems that the show always has.

Rumor: Britney Spears will open the VMAs

britney spearsLeave it to MTV to capitalize on someone who is having a mental breakdown in public. There's a rumor being reported by the E! network (that MTV is not denying) that Britney Spears will be the 'surprise' opening act of this year's Video Music Awards (VMAs).

The fact that MTV is not confirming or denying the report could mean a couple of things: A) They're trying to get buzz, or B) They don't want to announce it because she's too unstable to be relied upon to actually show up for the gig.

Either way, it will probably be uneventful. The VMAs are notoriously all build-up with no pay-off. At least, that's what I really hope happens this time if Britney does appear on stage. The show airs on September 9th.

MTV Video Music Awards to be held in Las Vegas

MTV logoMTV likes trying new things every year with their Video Music Awards. Of course, some ideas are better than others: two years ago, they held the VMAs in Miami during hurricane season, and had to scramble when Katrina hit the area the day before the show.

At least they won't have to worry about hurricanes this year; we've just received word that MTV has decided to hold the award show in Las Vegas, at the Palms Hotel and Casino. In fact, the network is planning an entire weekend of events around the VMAs, all to be broadcast on their channel. Some other interesting wrinkles: parts of the show will take place in different venues throughout the hotel, the show will only be shown in its original form once, and the "remixes" of subsequent airings (which I'm sure there will be many) will be programmed by viewers.

R&B star Chris Brown on The O.C.

Chris BrownDuring the MTV Video Music Awards, Chris Brown (whose song "Run It" has been playing on loop in my head, fighting strong against my attempts to drown it out with Radiohead) revealed that he has landed a role in the upcoming season of The O.C. He said that he will be playing a "band geek" in his seven episode stint, but I think it's just a weak cover-up by FOX. Something tells me that he's actually playing the mortal vessel that ends up carrying Marissa's ghost, occasionally speaking in her voice and pitching Neutrogena products. It'd be brilliant because no one would see it coming. Except me.

Mos Def arrested for VMA performance

mos defMos Def: not exactly a bad ass rapper. Sure... he was arrested in New York City, but it's not for your usual rapper garbage like gun possession (Diddy) or lying about a murder (Lil' Kim). Nope, NYC police cuffed Mos Def for an impromptu performance he gave outside the Radio City Music Hall last Thursday before the MTV VMAs. Apparently he didn't have a permit for the sound system. The cops interrupted a song he was performing about Hurricane Katrina on the back of a flatbed truck outside the awards show. Police kept Mos Def overnight and now he'll have to appear in court.

Who crashed the VMAs?

mtv 6000Wondering who the guy is who crashed the MTV VMAs last night? His name is Sixx and he claims to be a filmmaker who can't get a break in Hollywood. He and a couple friends are making a documentary-style movie about how they crash Hollywood awards shows.

Last night on MTV, Sixx hopped up on stage as Panic! at the Disco! was about to accept the award for Video of the Year from Jennifer Lopez. Sixx grabbed the microphone, introduced himself, said that MTV never gave him a show, and told people to log on to MTV6000.com. I went to the website last night and, even though it's excruciatingly slow, I got to watch about half of a movie trailer that is posted there. Eh.

You can watch the VMA crasher video on this site.
