Things I Hate About TV: Network execs

TV setOf course, I should say not all network execs because some of them, some place, somewhere, actually do love television and understand you have to give shows time to develop. This is for the other 93% of them.

The network upfronts this week are showing that network executives are the ultimate politicians, tossing around both praise and excuses and bullshit like they were running for Congress. Sure, the networks want to make money, and "spin" is a part of any business. But take a look at some of the comments we've heard this week:

Golden Globe Awards

Stars -- they're just like us. They go to parties, get wasted and say things they shouldn't, too. That's what makes the Golden Globes the best awards show. Not only do we see movie and TV stars in the same room (Leo and Lilly! McDreamy and Meryl!), the celebs really let loose. Steve Carell, Hugh Laurie and Geena Davis all gave hilarious speeches last year.

If you could only watch one network, which one would it be?

The OfficeI was thinking of this scenario the other day. What if the FCC or the cable providers or the God of Television (stay with me here people) declared that you could only have one TV network coming into your house? Which network would you pick? I'm not talking about throughout history, I'm talking about the networks that exist right now and the shows that exist on the lineups right now.

This is hard for me, because every single network has something that I absolutely love. Well, OK, maybe not The CW, but every other network. ABC has Lost and The Nine coming up, but I didn't pick ABC. CBS has 60 Minutes and Old Christine, but I didn't pick CBS either. CNN has all the latest news, FOX has Family Guy and The Simpsons, and HBO has Entourage, Bill Maher, and movies, but I didn't pick them either.

I'd have to go with NBC. While I like the above networks and shows and would seriously miss them, I could not live without The Office and Studio 60. And it would be nice to be able to still see The NBC Nightly News, SNL (even if it is really lame now), Today, Wimbledon coverage, and My Name Is Earl.

But Letterman, The Price is Right, and the U.S. Open are on CBS. Damn it! Well, I guess I could go over to the house of a friend who has only CBS, right?

Which network would you pick?
