Finally. Time Life has released the long-awaited
The Real Ghostbusters: The Complete Collection on DVD. And it's frackin' loaded. The mammoth $179.99 set features all 147 eps of
The Real Ghostbusters, plus more than twelve hours of extras, all packed in a box with hologram panels that resembles the firehouse from the show. Looks like I'm gonna have to sell my car. For $179.99.
I won't go on about how this animated spinoff of the
Ghostbusters movie was the best thing on Saturday morning in the late 80s and early 90s (but it was), or how it was also the coolest thing to watch in syndication after school every day (but it was), or how Egon Spengler helped me overcome my own personal boogeyman (but he did). I also won't waste your time writing about the awesome
Real Ghostbusters-inspired comics I used to create as a kid (but they were awesome), or how I still reference my favorite eps with my friends in casual conversation (but I do).
But I will ask you, dear
TV Squad reader, to help make my Christmas wish come true by persuading my wife to buy me this box set. Because I really don't want to sell my car for $179.99.

If you're at this site, that means you love television, and if you love television, you have some pretty strong opinions when it comes to its content, its history, its future. So let's fight about it.
After the jump are five opinions/ideas that I have. You're probably not going to agree with me on some of them (or any of them), but I think they're a great jumping-off point to get some arguments intelligent discussions going. Be warned that the following contains opinions that are probably going to tick you off and maybe even some that will make you think I've lost my mind.

It seems that everything is being released on DVD these days. Not just shows from the 50s and short-lived shows like The Adventures of Brisco County and Profit and many others. But there are many shows you'll never see on TV, because they're too obscure, don't have enough fan base, wouldn't be worth it financially, and/or just don't have any "buzz" to make it worth releasing by the studio. Now, I've been surprised before. I'm still shocked that Riptide made it to DVD. But I'm pretty confident we won't see the five shows below on DVD. Which is a shame, because they're five of my favorites.
In fact, if any of these shows are released on DVD (whole seasons, not an odd episode thrown on another DVD), I'll run naked through Central Park while eating a chicken salad sandwich and singing the theme song from Fame.

It's The Great American Pop Culture Quiz! Which character
uttered the words "Beam Me Up, Scotty" on Star Trek? What was the name of the company on the British
version of The Office? What was the name of Peter Graves' character on Mission: Impossible? Take the
quiz (not online, but go buy the issue you cheap bastard).
- Mandisa says her life is in His hands, not Simon Cowell's.
And by "His" she means Ronald McDonald.

they talking about? That's right, The 700 Club! Oh, alright, it's Will and Grace. An A to Z

For those who were looking forward to an early release for the Arrested
Development Season 3 DVD set, keep holding your breath. According to tvshowsondvd.com, the initial June release date for the 13
episode season has been pushed to an undetermined date later this year. Amazon
seems to confirm this as no release date is listed. This on the heels of the news that Mitch Hurwitz has exited
as AD's showrunner. What a crappy day.

The fourth season of
The Shield was great and arguably better than it should have been
because of the additions of Glenn Close and Anthony Anderson. The performances put forth by both of them really made the
season for me because everything else felt disjointed: the Strike Team was still in disarray and it just felt weird
having Vic and Shane constantly fighting. Dropping down from season three which had 15 episodes, season four returned
to the normal length of 13 which was disappointing but the fifth season is quickly approaching so I suppose they can be
forgiven.

We
talked about this recently, how some TV show DVDs are being held up because of how expensive it is to get rights to the
songs used in the shows. This Hollywood Reporter article
(via Yahoo News) talks about the problem in depth.
The best example of this is that delay in the WKRP In
Cincinnati DVDs. They used a lot of rock songs on the show, and I still remember, when the show
went into syndication, they replaced the music with horrible generic music in all the scenes, pretty much destroying the
mood of the episodes. And if you're familiar with the music they used in WKRP (or Ed or other
shows), then it really stands out. Fans were ticked that the second season DVDs of Quantum Leap were
changed. Some people think that WKRP will never be released on DVD.
What do you think?
Would you rather see your favorite show released on DVD, even if they have to change the music around, or would you
rather see it never released on DVD than have the music changed?
