Thirtysomething season two hits DVD in January

thirtysomething season two dvdI know I'm dating myself, but I'm really looking forward to watching the second season of thirtsysomething on DVD.

The first season was released back in August, and I had a blast catching up with great characters like Michael and Melissa Steadman, Elliot Weston and Gary Shepherd. Season two hits DVD in January, thanks to the good folks at Shout! Factory, known for putting out great sets like the packed Freaks and Geeks collection and the recent Transformers "G1" collector's set.

Some people might only think of thirtysomething as "that '80s show about whiny yuppies," and that's fine. But the Emmy-award winning drama brings back a lot of great memories for me. As I mentioned before, I used to watch it with my mom, who I'm pretty sure related to Patricia Wettig's frustrated homemaker Nancy Weston and free spirit Melissa Steadman, played by Melanie Mayron. (As for my dad, I'm not ashamed to say that he's more of a Timothy Busfield type!)

DVD cover art and release date for Andy Barker, P.I.

shout factory, dvd, andy barker p.i.I love Andy Richter, but he seems awfully stiff every time I watch him on The Tonight Show. I prefer to remember the guy from his early days on Late Night, his short-lived show Andy Richter Controls the Universe, and his other short-lived show, the hilarious Andy Barker, P.I.

Like Danny reported back in May, Andy Barker, P.I. is finally coming to DVD. Shout! Factory will release the entire series on Nov. 17. The two-disc set will include all six episodes, some with commentary by Richter and producer Conan O'Brien, plus a retrospective feature and a doc about the show's amazing writers, including Jonathan Groff (How I Met Your Mother), Josh Bycel (Psych), and Jane Espenson (Buffy, BSG). Click through for a better look at the DVD cover art.

Get ready to jingle your Christmas bells with the gang from It's Always Sunny

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: A Very Sunny ChristmasHere's something I never saw coming: a straight to DVD release of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's very own Christmas special. Frankly, I can't think of anything more inappropriate. I love it.

According to TVShowsOnDVD.com, the 60 min. special is set to be released on November 17th, exactly two months after the comedy's season five premiere on Thursday, September 17th on FX.

So what's it all about? Read on for the description from the official press release ...

Super-mega-uber-exclusive! The State DVD set for release this summer! Maybe...

MTV's The StateNothing has frustrated TV fans more than the never-ending release of The State DVD from MTV. It has become the Duke Nukem Forever of the television universe.

One minute, it's on and the next minute, it's off. Then it's back on again, then the whole thing gets called off. Then it rises from the ashes like a flaming phoenix into the never-ending sky only to get doused with a fire extinguisher by an MTV Home Entertainment executive.

Now it appears that ill-fated collection of magic discs is coming soon to a DVD store near you until MTV decides it's time to destroy your dreams and tell your children there is no Santa Claus again.

Hey MTV, I want The State on DVD already

the state mtvIf you grew up watching MTV in the '90s, then you probably remember The State. If you don't – and you're an American between the age of 30 and 35 – do a YouTube search for "I wanna dip my balls in it" and let the memories flood right on back.

I credit the irreverent MTV sketch comedy show with keeping me from slipping into a full-blown depression during my teenage years, aka the angsty, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains-drenched years. The State ran from 1993 to 1995 and helped launch the careers of some of my favorite comic actors, writers and filmmakers, including David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer, Role Models), Thomas Lennon (Reno 911, Balls of Fury) and Michael Ian Black (Stella, Ed). All 11 members of the comedy troupe reunited recently to perform new material at SF Sketchfest in January. The A.V. Club talked to State alums Wain, Lennon and Kerri Kenney-Silver this week about the reunion and about their future plans. Among the things that came up in the interview was the status of that promised complete-series DVD.

Mad Men lighter DVD case... Ten shows on DVD

Since there are twelve shows a-stinkin' on TV this year (well, that's the low estimate), you might be glad to hear that 2008 brought us some spectacular TV on DVD. You knew there had to be a bright spot, right?

Whether you want to re-watch your favorite classic shows from the '50s or '60s (or earlier), or catch up on one of the hottest shows on current TV (yeah, there are a few) by starting with the first season, they've been released on DVD in 2008. It was actually hard to pick just ten, but for better or for worse, here are my picks:

All I want for Christmas is 50 hours with The Real Ghostbusters - VIDEO

the real ghostbustersFinally. Time Life has released the long-awaited The Real Ghostbusters: The Complete Collection on DVD. And it's frackin' loaded. The mammoth $179.99 set features all 147 eps of The Real Ghostbusters, plus more than twelve hours of extras, all packed in a box with hologram panels that resembles the firehouse from the show. Looks like I'm gonna have to sell my car. For $179.99.

I won't go on about how this animated spinoff of the Ghostbusters movie was the best thing on Saturday morning in the late 80s and early 90s (but it was), or how it was also the coolest thing to watch in syndication after school every day (but it was), or how Egon Spengler helped me overcome my own personal boogeyman (but he did). I also won't waste your time writing about the awesome Real Ghostbusters-inspired comics I used to create as a kid (but they were awesome), or how I still reference my favorite eps with my friends in casual conversation (but I do).

But I will ask you, dear TV Squad reader, to help make my Christmas wish come true by persuading my wife to buy me this box set. Because I really don't want to sell my car for $179.99.

Five TV show argument starters

SNL

If you're at this site, that means you love television, and if you love television, you have some pretty strong opinions when it comes to its content, its history, its future. So let's fight about it.

After the jump are five opinions/ideas that I have. You're probably not going to agree with me on some of them (or any of them), but I think they're a great jumping-off point to get some arguments intelligent discussions going. Be warned that the following contains opinions that are probably going to tick you off and maybe even some that will make you think I've lost my mind.

The Five: Great shows you'll never, ever, ever see on DVD

Tom BergeronIt seems that everything is being released on DVD these days. Not just shows from the 50s and short-lived shows like The Adventures of Brisco County and Profit and many others. But there are many shows you'll never see on TV, because they're too obscure, don't have enough fan base, wouldn't be worth it financially, and/or just don't have any "buzz" to make it worth releasing by the studio. Now, I've been surprised before. I'm still shocked that Riptide made it to DVD. But I'm pretty confident we won't see the five shows below on DVD. Which is a shame, because they're five of my favorites.

In fact, if any of these shows are released on DVD (whole seasons, not an odd episode thrown on another DVD), I'll run naked through Central Park while eating a chicken salad sandwich and singing the theme song from Fame.

Arrested Development DVD delayed

Arrested Development; DVD; FOXFor those who were looking forward to an early release for the Arrested Development Season 3 DVD set, keep holding your breath. According to tvshowsondvd.com, the initial June release date for the 13 episode season has been pushed to an undetermined date later this year. Amazon seems to confirm this as no release date is listed. This on the heels of the news that Mitch Hurwitz has exited as AD's showrunner. What a crappy day.

[Thanks to Jeff for the tip.]

DVD Review: The Shield, Season 4

The Shield Season 4The fourth season of The Shield was great and arguably better than it should have been because of the additions of Glenn Close and Anthony Anderson. The performances put forth by both of them really made the season for me because everything else felt disjointed: the Strike Team was still in disarray and it just felt weird having Vic and Shane constantly fighting. Dropping down from season three which had 15 episodes, season four returned to the normal length of 13 which was disappointing but the fifth season is quickly approaching so I suppose they can be forgiven.

Here's why your favorite show isn't on DVD

We talked about this recently, how some TV show DVDs are being held up because of how expensive it is to get rights to the songs used in the shows. This Hollywood Reporter article (via Yahoo News) talks about the problem in depth.

The best example of this is that delay in the WKRP In Cincinnati DVDs. They used a lot of rock songs on the show, and I still remember, when the show went into syndication, they replaced the music with horrible generic music in all the scenes, pretty much destroying the mood of the episodes. And if you're familiar with the music they used in WKRP (or Ed or other shows), then it really stands out. Fans were ticked that the second season DVDs of Quantum Leap were changed. Some people think that WKRP will never be released on DVD.

What do you think? Would you rather see your favorite show released on DVD, even if they have to change the music around, or would you rather see it never released on DVD than have the music changed?
