Smallville: Maybe the Wonder Twins episode won't be so bad

Smallville Wonder TwinsSo that silly pair of purple-clad superheroes, The Wonder Twins, are coming to Smallville this Friday. I can think of worse things that could happen to the show: Kristin Kreuk could return (shudder), for example, or Clark's bare chest could start to sparkle in the sunlight, ala Edward Cullen. Now that would be truly terrible.

But Zan and Jayna nerding up the joint? Sounds like fun to me.

Being a fan of the veteran superhero series, I'm not embarrassed to say that I'm looking forward to seeing the live-action Twins bump fists this Friday. (I wouldn't even mind a cameo from everybody's favorite blue monkey, Gleek, but sadly I don't think that's in the cards.)

Smallville producers pushing for a tenth season

Julian Sands SmallvilleSmallville really is the show that won't die.

After more than eight years, numerous cast departures, and countless recycled plotlines, Smallville might be headed for a tenth season, producer Kelly Souders told EW. Somehow, the veteran superhero series manages to stay on the air while shows like Southland and Trauma can't seem to make it past season one.

Smallville has experienced a drop in ratings since its recent move to Friday nights on The CW, but Souders says the drop off hasn't been that bad. Last week's episode, "Roulette," attracted 2.5 million viewers, a season high for the series. It shared third place in the ratings with ABC for the 8 p.m. hour. That's not terrible for a CW show in its ninth season.

Smallville: Rabid

smallville rabid(S09E03) Who knew the Smallville zombie episode would turn out to be such a bummer? Our heroes did nothing but whine, brood, and talk about their lonely lives while the almost undead were chompin' on people's limbs.

Where were the fun Grindhouse-style action sequences with the good guys firing sawed-off shotguns and revving up chainsaws? Where were the decapitations? And where were the jokes? You'd think a show about Superman fighting zombies would have plenty of jokes.

I understand that every piece of zombie art can't be as fun and clever as Zombieland, or as gloriously gory as 28 Days Later, but I was hoping for something a little more off the wall here.

Sonic Youth to appear on Gossip Girl; Thurston Moore wants recurring role

sonic youth gossip girl thurston mooreSo legendary New York art rockers Sonic Youth will appear on Gossip Girl on Oct. 12. And last year, front man Thurston Moore recorded a version of The Ramones' "Sheena is A Punk Rocker" with Be Your Own Pet's Jemina Pearl for the show.

What the hell is going on here? Since when do bands like Sonic Youth appear on and record songs for shows like Gossip Girl?

I know what some of you are thinking: The Flaming Lips showed up on the original Beverly Hills 90210 back in the '90s, teaching walking jockstrap Steve Sanders that alternative music can really "rock the house." But that was different. The Lips were riding the publicity buzz of their first breakout hit, "She Don't Use Jelly." Sonic Youth doesn't seem to be on any sort of publicity tour, and they certainly don't need to court the teen market to keep making records. So here's the explanation: It turns out Moore and wife/bassist Kim Gordon are big fans of Gossip Girl.

Firefly's Gina Torres joins Gossip Girl as a 'free spirit'

gina torress gossip girl fireflyUnlike our own Jane Boursaw, I've yet to dive head first into the trashy teen world of The CW's Gossip Girl. I'm sure this comes as a surprise to no one, since my favorite shows tend to take place on spaceships or feature brooding vampires. But a recent addition to the cast might get me to start watching the saucy soap for the first time when it returns in September; one of my favorite sci-fi actors, Firefly alum Gina Torres, has signed on to play the recurring role of Gabriela Abrams, Vanessa's mother.

Gabriela is described as a warm and outgoing free spirit from Brooklyn who has been hiding out in Vermont. The show's privileged teens are in for one hell of a season if Gabriela is anything like Jasmine, Torres' duplicitous character from the fourth season of Angel. It's probably not crazy to think that Gabriela will have some kind of edge to her. I've heard some of the parents on Gossip Girl make Lucille Bluth look like Mrs. Cunningham.

Torres is set to appear in two episodes and expected to recur throughout the series. Gossip Girl's season premiere airs Sept. 14.

Tom Welling snapped wearing Smallville super suit

smallville logoSome clever nerd snapped a few pics of Tom Welling wearing what looks to be his Superman-meets-Neo supersuit on the set of Smallville.

Fans of the show have been waiting to see Welling wear the Superman outfit for years. If the leaked Comic-Con trailer is to be believed, then Smallville's Clark Kent will finally sport the Superman "S" on his chest in the show's upcoming ninth season.

Supernatural will get Paris Hilton

Paris Hilton in a rare clothed appearanceTV's Supernatural is about to get a lot weirder, and for a show that's about undead beings that steal people's "life forces" and shapeshifting douchebags, that's pretty damn weird.

E! Online scooped the universe with confirmation that Paris "The Human Spotlight" Hilton will make a guest star appearance on the paranormal CW show.

The network didn't spill much on the plot of Miss Hilton's visit, but noted "We've heard the storyline, and when you see it you will die." So I guess if you're not a big fan of dying, don't watch Supernatural or better yet, make someone you hate watch it. You've committed guilt-free murder, and The CW earns another ratings point.

Will Lex Luthor rise from the grave for Smallville's season nine?

michael rosenbaum smallville season nineMichael Rosenbaum's departure from Smallville in season seven should have been a heavy blow to a series already suffering from flagging ratings and a bad batch of still-born stories. But the following season turned out to be one of Smallville's best, introducing a fine female successor to Rosenbaum's Lex Luthor and edging us closer into Superman territory.

With season nine on the horizon, and the show getting its best reviews and ratings in years, the big question is coming up again: Will Rosenbaum return to Smallville?

Last season we watched a disfigured Lex, played by a different actor whose face was hidden, apparently die in an explosion. Of course, fans knew instantly that Superman's nemesis was still kicking somewhere (as confirmed by exec producer Brian Peterson at Comic-Con).

From Smallville to Metropolis?

smallville the cw metropolisAnd Smallville refuses to give up the spotlight.

In less than a month, we've heard talk about a possible spinoff for the CW series, read heated speculation over a simple casting notice, and reported on two major casting announcements. Now we're reading rumors about a possible Smallville TV movie called Metropolis that could serve as a coda to the show's ninth, and probably final, season.

The rumor -- and I repeat: rumor -- comes from the boys at AICN who say a source got a glimpse of some Smallville promotional signage for the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con. Reportedly, the source, who goes by the handle "Yoda's Bitch," eyed some signage somewhere, presumably on the planet Earth, featuring the words "Metropolis: Christmas 2010" in Smallville-style font. The sign is also supposedly advertising Smallville's upcoming Comic-Con panel. AICN says they have info that this possible Metropolis project could be a TV movie set to head into production after May 2010. Read more at SciFi Squad.

Reaper creators join Dollhouse writing staff

dollhouse reaper whedonWay back in April we reported that Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, creators of The CW's Reaper, had signed a deal with 20th Century Fox and would most likely be leaving Reaper behind. Now that The CW has officially canceled Reaper to make room for its upcoming slate of bubblegum teen TV, Fazekas and Butters are joining the writing staff of Joss Whedon's Dollhouse. The Reaper duo will begin their Dollhouse stint in season two, which kicks off Friday, Sept. 18 on Fox.

I have mixed feelings about this news. I'm glad that Dollhouse nabbed these two obviously talented and funny writers, but I'm still bummed about Reaper's cancellation. And while this might mean that Dollhouse will deliver more smart, nerdy comedy in season two, that Friday night death slot still has me worried.

Brian Austin Green isn't joining One Tree Hill

brian austin green, terminator, one tree hillBrian Austin Green won't be fighting Skynet or returning to prime time soaps next fall.

Last week, we reported that the former Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles star was in talks to join the The CW teen drama One Tree Hill. Nerds like me, who came to love Green as TSCC's badass, cyborg-killing Derek Reese, were crushed. But it's time for those nerd hearts to heal. It turns out Green's reps didn't make a deal, and he won't be moving to One Tree Hill.

Instead, OTH has turned to Lipstick Jungle's Robert Buckley, who recently showed up on the network's much-praised but still canceled drama Privileged. Buckley will play the young, sexy sports agent role that was offered to Green.

Brian Austin Green in talks to join The CW's One Tree Hill

Brian Austin Green in talks for One Tree HillBeverly Hills 90210 alum Brian Austin Green earned a number of new fans playing the tough, militaristic Derek Reese on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Now, with TSCC officially canceled, Green is heading back to the world of prime time soaps. The actor is currently in talks to join the cast of The CW's One Tree Hill.

According to Variety, Green will potentially play a sports agent who is "enjoying the spoils that come from being a wealthy, handsome single guy" on the veteran drama.

It looks like One Tree Hill might be looking to Green to fill a void left by the departures of stars Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton. Green certainly has Murray beat in the charisma department, and I'm sure the show's fans -- I assume they are mostly young women -- will welcome him with open arms. But I can't help but feel disappointed by this news.

New Smallville season nine poster is a Photoshop disaster

Smallville season nine poster

Kryptonsite has posted The CW's new promo poster for Smalville's upcoming ninth season ... and damn, it's ugly.

My graphic designer friends could do a better job of picking this thing apart, but even a Photoshop noob like me can tell it was a rush job. First, lets get the obvious out of the way - that definitely ain't Erica Durance's body. (According to Kryptonsite, that torso belongs to Kristin Kreuk!)

Then we have Tom Welling's head, which was seemingly beamed in from an entirely different season than his body. Or is it just growing out of his jacket collar? Chloe and Green Lantern Arrow look fine, but those shots were definitely pasted in from a previous season's promo shoot.

Reaper refuses to abandon all hope

The cast of TV's There are a lot of shows with their heads on the chopping block, but one that truly deserves a stay of execution is furiously wiggling its head out of the neck brace.

Show producers are negotiating with local CW affiliates to bring Reaper back on Sunday nights next season in syndication. The deal could also bring the show to cable.

The Hollywood Reporter, however, notes that either scenario is a bigger long shot than Roseanne's chances of getting another crack at singing the National Anthem at a Padres' home game.
