Seven greatest hand cannons in TV history

Remote Control GunThere are a lot of really horrible things that have put America on the map: Jerry Springer, our ability to infuse anything edible with cheese, the fact that we're probably working on infusing something inedible with cheese.

Guns, however, shouldn't be one of them. The Second Amendment stands as one of many great testaments to the idea of freedom that our forefathers envisioned for their people. They felt a government should trust their people with great responsibility if they truly believed in the concept of freedom and democracy.

Sure, if they came to the present and saw that we primarily use that responsibility for hunting moose from helicopters and negotiating with the Domino's guy they might take it right back, but the idea is what's important.

So to celebrate one of America's latest of many birthday to come because fireworks are technically illegal in my neck of the woods, here are your TV's seven greatest guns.

Colbert gives a Tip of the Hat and a Wag of the Finger

The Colbert Report has a regular feature called A Tip of the Hat and A Wag of the Finger, where he praises one thing and goes after something else. Last night he talked about Missouri State Representative Cynthia Davis and her "hunger can be a positive motivator" stance, and then criticized FOX News for calling Governor Mark Sanford a Democrat, saying they also identified Hurricane Katrina as a Democrat. (Video also here.)

Didn't Jimmy Kimmel do a similar joke recently? Yes he did:

What You Missed Last Night: the life and death of Jeff Goldblum

If you were on Twitter last week the day Michael Jackson died, you also might have seen the rumors that Jeff Goldblum had fallen on a movie set in New Zealand and died (there was also a rumor that Harrison Ford had died but that wasn't true either). Last night Stephen Colbert broke the news to fans, only to have Goldblum show up himself to dispute the report.

The funniest part is the live news report from New Zealand about Goldblum dying. I'd love to hear the answer as to why they said the police had confirmed it! (Video also here.)

Mark Sanford was on The Colbert Report last year

The weirdest part of that Governor Mark Sanford press conference yesterday wasn't the odd detail he gave or the lies he told his staff about this whole affair/hike, it was the girl in the background behind Sanford who kept smiling broadly. Perhaps the next time a cheating politician has a press conference he should do it with his back against a wall.

Anyway, Stephen Colbert tackled the subject last night. He has a unique take on it because he actually interviewed Sanford back in early 2008 as part of his "Better Know" series (the interview was repeated earlier this year). Here's the whole episode (the Sanford segment is first).

Former fly supports Colbert's view of FlyGate 2009

Yesterday we showed you a clip of Stephen Colbert's outrage at President Obama swatting a fly during an interview with CNBC. And now he has support from a big name star who, well, has experience with being a fly. (Video also here.)

Stewart and Colbert investigate Obama's fly-swatting

You've probably seen the video of President Obama killing a fly during an interview with CNBC (yes, PETA is mad). Last night both The Daily Show and The Colbert Report handled the incident in very different ways. First, Jon Stewart runs around with his shirt off, and after the jump, Stephen Colbert tries to interview the widow.

Last week's Colbert Report in seven minutes

Last week was a really special week for late night comedy shows. No, I'm not talking about a certain feud between a host and a politician. I'm talking about the four shows that The Colbert Report did from Iraq. There was a lot of great stuff, and if you missed any of it, here's a quick recap. (Video also here.)

Yes, this is newsworthy: Stephen Colbert gets a buzz cut

Stephen Colbert's new hair
As most of you know by now, Stephen Colbert is taking his show on the road again and this time, the Colbert Report is going to Baghdad. It's certainly a far cry from his first TCR outside of New York, that week in Philadelphia way back in April of last year (check it out, I was there). The troops and the casual viewers at home will definitely be in for a treat.

Something I certainly was not expecting out of this trip was a new look for Mr. Colbert. Sure, he was bound to incorporate some camo to get into the spirit of things, but I was expecting maybe, like, a tie or a playful lapel pin. But no. As we can see from this video, Mr. Colbert is hardcore enough to bypass the semi-patriotic accessories and get a full-on buzzcut.

Stephen Colbert to guest edit Newsweek

Stephen Colbert, The Colbert ReportThe New York Observer is reporting that Stephen Colbert will guest edit the June 8 edition of Newsweek. According to the Observer, the idea came from a lunch between Newsweek editor Jon Meacham (who has been a guest on The Colbert Report) and Colbert, in which Meacham was impressed by Colbert's knowledge of current events.

The stories themselves will be treated seriously, as they would in any other issue, but Colbert gets to play in the margins, editing contributor bios, writing an essay, and annotating different stories. Which should make next week's issue look something like the magazine version of The Daily Show's faux text book America.

The Observer quotes Colbert as saying, "I'm confident we'll have mixed results! I want to be apart [sic] of that proud tradition!" and cites a few other guest editor ventures gone wrong. I wonder about the timing of it. Newsweek launched a complete redesign three issues ago, trying to re-conceptualize the newsweekly's place in the age of instant news.

Stephen Colbert gives a clue to where he's going

It's not secret that Stephen Colbert is going to the Middle East to do his show, but what is a secret is the exact place. Last night he gave a clue or two to where he's going. (Video also here.)

I love a clip that can somehow get in references to the first Superman movie, "Where in the world is Matt Lauer?," and Press Your Luck.

Stephen Colbert is one angry man

The Colbert Report is in repeats this week, but we can still get our dose of Stephen Colbert goodness with this "greatest hits" clip below. It's a montage of Colbert's angriest moments, including getting beaten at the Emmys by Barry Manilow, the bonuses for the execs at AIG, and not being able to get a Black Visa Card. If anything, this instantly makes you want to go to the Colbert Nation site and watch complete episodes.

A very Happy Birthday to Stephen Colbert (from Stephen Colbert)

Today is Stephen Colbert's 45th birthday. And as you can guess, no one is going to wish him a bigger "Happy Birthday!" than Colbert himself. But the video below is also a request to go to DonorsChoose.org to help provide school supplies to schools and kids who need them.

What You Missed Last Night: Stephen Colbert has been pre-approved for a credit card!

Leave it to The Colbert Report to boil down a major news story into a five minute segment that we can understand and laugh at. This time Stephen is all over the credit card companies and their rates, fees, and pre-approved offers. In the first minute there are at least two lines you'll probably be quoting at some point in the next few weeks, and that little credit card is just...adorable! (Video also here.)

He also ate cat food last night.

Conservatives can't quit Colbert

Stephen Colbert of Whoever says that shows like The Daily Show and The Colbert Report suffer from a liberal bias have no idea what they are talking about. The Colbert Report, in particular, has a large audience of deep conservative thinkers whose arteries AND veins run redder than their state.

The problem is that some of those conservatives may not be laughing at what they are watching. In fact, get ready to be scared out of your head. They might actually agree with what they are hearing.

A new study conducted by Ohio State University found that some viewers of Colbert's show who purported to be conservative are taking the show a bit too seriously. And by a bit too, I mean literally seriously.

What You Missed Last Night: Stephen Colbert and the city of the future!

I wasn't sure which segment from last night's Colbert Report to post, but I picked this interview with architect Mitchell Joachim because they talk about The Jetsons, Keebler Elves, and Knight Rider! Joachim wants to rebuild cities, infrastructure, and even cars so they are more human-friendly. At one point Colbert calls these cars "Nerf Cars," which is a very funny visual. I'm not sure how fast you'd be able to go in a Nerf Car though. Wait 'til you see this guy's plan for a future bus.
