What You Missed Last Night: Kreskin stands on Jimmy Fallon

There are probably a ton of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon viewers who have no idea who The Amazing Kreskin is. But he was a big deal many, many years ago. Last night he did a trick on Fallon's show that I think he said he wasn't allowed to do on The Tonight Show when Johnny Carson was host. Honestly? I have no idea what's so special about this trick. And neither does the audience, judging from their reaction.

Buffy online trivia quizzes rated by me

ffy gang, cast photoYou know you love Buffy, but could you beat me in a Buffy the Vampire Slayer trivia contest? Nope, this is not a challenge, but I did challenge myself by taking some of the online trivia quizzes.

There are scads of Buffy and Angel trivia quizzes online, some totally lame, others a fun romp down Nostalgia Lane, still others so bizarre and obscure that you wonder about the mental health of the creators. I took 'em, I rated 'em, and now I'm sharing my thoughts with you.

Ultimate Buffy Trivia on Cool Quiz (1/5)
My apologies to Josh Spears, but this quiz was not very challenging. I got all of the questions right, as would just about any fair-weather fan (of which I am not!). It is a fun quiz to take if you love Oz, because many of the questions are about him, but it runs extremely slow and is relatively painful overall.

Is it real or Scooby?

scooby

Mental Floss has a clever little quiz in which you must determine whether various descriptions of bizarre crimes actually happened in real life, or are merely plots of various Scooby-Doo cartoons. I'd recommend taking the quiz before reading any further.

I surprised myself by actually scoring 9 out of 10. The only one I was fairly positive about was number four, as I'm fairly certain no Hanna Barbera cartoon would ever feature someone pointing a gun at someone else. At least, not lighter fare like Scooby Doo. I'm sure Batman has had various weapons aimed at him on more than one occasion.

Good TV makes you fat

fat tvAccording to a new study, people eat more when they're watching television they find entertaining.

Dr. Alan Hirsch, the neurological director for the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago, conducted an experiment in which folks were given chips to eat while watching Letterman and Leno, and chips to eat when not watching any TV at all. As it turns out, they ate more chips while watching TV because they paid less attention to whether or not they were full while distracted by what was on the television.

Everybody Hates Chris: Everybody Hates the Substitute

everybody hates chris(S02E12) In this review I mentioned that the character of Ms. Morello seemed to be switching from a dimwitted woman misinformed about black culture to your basic run-of-the-mill racist, and in this episode she wasn't much better, returning to a trip from Africa with a tiny bone for Chris he could put in his nose.

Now, if that's merely a choice on the part of the writers to have Ms. Morello completely oblivious to her own actions as a means of comic relief, that's their prerogative, but what I loved about her character from the early episodes is how she demonstrated that not all racism is blatant: sometimes you can have what seems like the best of intentions and still be completely wrong in your approach. Now, she's just another idiot.

Which Muppet are you?

rowlf; muppetThere are plenty of other things I could be doing with my time on this Sunday, but none of them are as fun as taking a handful of different Muppets personality tests on the internet. This test says I'm Fozzie Bear. This one says I'm Animal. This one thinks I'm Kermit. This one thinks I'm Statler and Waldorf.

I disagree with all of them. I think the true Muppets test is just in your looks, not your personality. I think I look like Rowlf (it's the brown hair). I have a friend who is a dead ringer for Janice, one who reminds me of Fozzie Bear, and another who could totally pass for Crazy Harry. There's a Muppet for everybody!

So.. forget the stupid tests. Which Muppet do you resemble?

Strangers with Candy: The Trip Back

strangers with candy(S01E10) Well, kids, this is the finally episode of Strangers with Candy, season one. I hope everyone enjoyed this little trip down memory lane and that you found these reviews to be equal parts informative and arousing. This episode brings everything full circle and Jerri ends up back in prison again by the end, though she informs us she'll be out in time to start school once the summer is over.

At the beginning of the episode, Jerri is elated to learn she's getting a D in history, which means she'll actually be able to pass and move on to her sophomore year. Unfortunately, she befriends a stoner who gets Jerri hooked on pot and she begins to neglect her homework. She also makes a bong out of clay in art class, which Jelineck correctly points out is missing a carb hole. Jelineck tries to persuade his students not to smoke marijuana, telling them he once tried it but that "the only thing it fixed was my life."

Don't forget! Pop Culture IQ Test tonight

pop culture quiz; vh1VH1 is hosting two tests tonight on its website for a new game show, The World Series of Pop Culture. At 7 pm or 10 pm (ET), you can log on to this website and take the pop culture quiz. There are six sections, with 10 questions each. You have six minutes to complete each section, but only the fastest to answer will make it through to the interview session with the producers. From that pool, VH1 will choose three people to be on a Wild Card team when it hosts the pop culture tournament in New York City on the weekend of April 28-30.

I took the sample quiz and it was a breeze, with lots of references to '80s and early '90s television shows and movies such as Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Cosby Show, and Seinfeld. Good luck!

[Thanks, Lee!]

A new way to get on Jeopardy

alex trebek website jeopardy!Answer: What is the internet?

Correct! For a limited time only, Jeopardy! is seeking out fans over this crazy thing we call the internet. From March 28-30 on its website, Jeopardy! will offer a 50-question, general knowledge quiz that potential contestants can take. Each day is designated for a specific time zone. The idea is for this test to reach out to people all over the United States, not just in the cities where Jeopardy! holds auditions. If you pass the test, you may be selected for an interview, an audition, and another test, and then you could be on the show!

If you get on, I dare you to do Darrell Hammond's Sean Connery. I DARE YOU.

Daytime TV makes old people dumb

old ladyWell, maybe. Actually, a recent study showed older women who cite daytime dramas and talk shows as their favorite shows to watch did not score as well as those who listed other shows. However, Dr. Joshua Fogel of Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, the man who conducted the tests, was quick to point out this doesn't mean there's a direct link between stupid daytime shows and actually being stupid. Heck, if seeing stupid things on TV actually made you stupid this whole blog would be completely unreadable since we'd all be drooling and banging on our keyboards with our foreheads. Anyway, the research hasn't really proved anything, except their MIGHT be a connection between the shows we choose to watch and our own cognitive ability. Well, I know Grover's demonstration of "near" and "far" has helped me tremendously with my grasp of spatial relations, so maybe they're right.
