Could TV be taking a back seat to the Web?

TV may be taking a back seat to the web, according to a new surveyAccording to a recent survey that answer may be 'yes'. However, since the survey was conducted by IBM there may be a bit of favoritism towards the Superinternethighway. Not that I'm pointing fingers or anything, but the survey was conducted by IBM.

Did I say that the survey was conducted by computer company IBM? Just wanted to make sure.

What the survey found was that more people are spending time on the Internet rather than with their TV. Nineteen percent said that they spend six hours or more surfing the web. This is opposed to the 8% who watch television for the same amount of time. Ironically, these Internet users are spending most of their time on sites that contain television material. Thirty-nine percent of those surveyed mentioned that they spend most of their time viewing content on YouTube, while 33% go over to network TV sites.

The Amazing Race: He Can't Swim But He Can Eat Cow Lips

(S10E09) Here's my conundrum -- I am a woman and therefore really want to see a female team win the Amazing Race, however I find it really hard to root for the Beauty Queens. They are so snide about the "six pack" and they are aggressive and rude. Still, they are chicks and they do kick some serious butt.

The Amazing Race: I Know Phil, Little Ol' Gorgeous Thing!

(S10E04) The Amazing Race is always a battle but this season seems even more brutal than most. The good thing is that it means that no one team is dominating the race. But it's painful to watch at times because the teams already seem deeply tired. One thing is certain this episode, you can fight with your partner every step of the way and still come in first.

American Idol: Nooooooooooooooo!

ai logoIn what can only be described as the most upsetting moment in my musical/variety/game show existence, Chris Daughtry has been eliminated from American Idol. This is a disaster! I am angry pissed. I am absolutely at a loss for words. I know it's only a TV show and I shouldn't be so upset by it, but I am. It wasn't his time to go. He should have won. He was my next American Idol.

And I hate the way that it happened. It all happened too fast; it didn't even seem real. Ryan paired Elliott and Taylor together, then Katharine and Chris. Elliott and Taylor were safe. And then ... then ... then ... before I could even register what was going on, Seacrest half-ass mumbles, "Chris, a lot of people thought you'd be the next American Idol, but you're going home tonight." It was horribly shocking, and not in the good way that Lost is shocking. This is bull crap. This is a big pile of crap. This is a big pile of crap, piled on top of more crap, and Ryan Seacrest is on top of that pile of crap. It should have been Elliott for his weeks and weeks of not bringing it. Or, if we are going by an isolated bad night, then it should have been Katharine. But Chris? No, not Chris. It wasn't his time. It wasn't his time. It wasn't his time!

American Idol: Elliott & Elvis are BFF

ai logoIt's always been a dream of mine to take a road trip to Tennessee to visit Graceland and Dollywood -- a white trash pilgrimage of sorts. I don't foresee that happening any time soon, so I'll make do with American Idol's homage to Elvis, and keep my fingers crossed for Dolly's night next season.

Everything about tonight was backwards -- the favorites sorta sucked, and Elliott finally found his moment to shine. My crappy internet connection keeps going out, so enough of the pleasantries...let's do this!

Maybe Star Jones really did almost die

Star JonesOh, there have been lots of back and forth on this one. First the National Enquirer said that Star Jones almost bled to death on the operating table during breast lift surgery. Then Jones herself called into The View and said that she didn't. And now The New York Daily News' Lloyd Grove says he has heard a 911 tape that proves Jones almost bled to death and actually had to be rushed from one medical center to another.

But that's not all you'll read about in this column. It seems Rosie O'Donnell and her partner are thinking about having more kids. The article says that they have three adopted kids, and one from "the old-fashioned way." Um, the old-fashioned way?  How exactly does that work between two women?

Survivor: Panama: Episode 5

The starvation ends! The Survivor powers-that-be must have decided our tribes are looking too scrawny because they are finally play for food and both teams get a little something to take home. Instead of singing for their supper, the tribes have to toss their food to each other and chop up fish. Bruce can't hack through a large fish and slows down the team. On the next catch he drops the fish giving La Mina a one fish lead. But Sally can't catch a fish which gives Casaya the lead and they win reward. La Mina chooses to take beans as their food (I'd hate to be around that camp the first night) and Terry gets sent to  Exile Island again. So far the Exile Island idea doesn't really seem to be much of a game changer. While he's on Exile Island Terry frets that his tribe isn't taking good care of themselves. He seems to think that he is the father of a set of helpless children who can't survive without daddy. On the list of Survivor sins, overestimating your own importance ranks pretty high but he hasn't had a chance to learn that yet.

American Idol: The night of bad song choices

simonbustAm I the only person in the world who gets really annoyed when the contestants hold up their fingers to tell you what number to dial so you can vote for them? I don't know why that irks me, but it just does. Now that I got that off my chest (she breathes a sigh of relief), I must say that I found tonight absolutely boring. Practically every performance was just boring. I normally sit and watch Idol  with semi-enthusiasm, but tonight I think I got up in the middle of virtually every performance. I helped my roommate make iced tea. I looked for my nail clippers. I put socks on because my feet were cold. I flossed my teeth. Tonight's performances were just plain boring.

Typically, I give my two cents on each of the contestants, but I don't even feel the need to do that. Every performance was so similar in mediocrity that I feel like I would just be repeating myself with every evaluation.

Jerome Bettis joins NBC sports team

bettis nbcDuring the Super Bowl earlier this month, ABC micced up Jerome Bettis and occasionally played clips of his motivational speeches to teammates during the game. Apparently NBC considered that an audition, because he's been hired as one of the commentators for Sunday NFL games. He'll join Bob Costas and Al Michaels. His first game will be Sept. 7 in Pittsburgh, when the Steelers receive their Super Bowl rings.

HBO using Google Maps to promote Sopranos

HBO understands the viral power of the internet and is apparently hoping to get in on it with a couple of online promotions for the upcoming season of The Sopranos, which starts March 12. First, it's paying Google to use its maps to identify certain parts of New Jersey where key parts of The Sopranos have happened (does that mean we'll know where Ralphie's head is buried?). Starting February 27th, all you'll have to do is go to Google and type in "Sopranos Map".

HBO.com is also planning an interactive game called Whack a Soprano.

Neve Campbell is engaged

neve campbell engagedHe got down on one knee and recited Shakespeare to her.

She said yes.

Former Party of Five actress Neve Campbell is engaged to British actor John Light, according to People magazine. Light starred in the Showtime film The Lion in Winter and in the HBO series Band of Brothers. Campbell was previously married to Canadian actor Jeff Colt, they divorced in 1997 after 2 1/2 years of marriage.

Franken ponders politics

al frankenAl Franken recently moved his radio show to my humble little metropolis of Minneapolis, the city where he grew up. By sheer coincidence I know one of his producers and I asked them why he was back in his homestate of Minnesota. Turns out Franken is giving some serious consideration to making a senate run in 2008. He hasn't officially thrown his hat in the ring, according to an interview with AlterNet he did recently, but the fact that he moved the whole shebang to Minnesota pretty much makes one think it's going to happen. I think the "celebrity to politician" move is a crap shoot at best, but this is Minnesota, and Al is a hometown boy. I figure if Jesse Ventura could get his hulking frame into office Franken probably stands a pretty good chance.

In the interview, Franken talks about humor revealing a deeper truth (something I completely agree with), but even with his recent political affiliations, do people still think of him as just Al Franken the funny guy from Saturday Night Live? Put another way, can a person add a new dimension to their public persona after so many years of being seen only one way? It has happened, but that move is always a tenuous one.

American Idol: Boston Auditions

aiI've never been a big fan of Boston. I always thought it was the New York for woosies. I mean, take the New England Patriots -- they have a quarterback who not only looks like he could date a supermodel, but could also be a supermodel. But one thing about Boston -- they've got great hometown spirit and I love that. They are one of those cities (i.e. Detroit) that has a lot of pride. But maybe too much pride.

Brit slammed for baby ride

britney spears and babyRecently some pictures of Britney Spears were shown on this blog. Web surfers, never needing much provocation to become livid over something that doesn't really affect them personally, were up in arms over Brit's total disregard for her son's safety, who you can see is resting on his mom's lap and not in a car seat. Apparently the pictures made the rounds on some news programs, prompting Spears to release a statement where she explained that she sped off in a hurry to avoid what she considered a dangerous situation brought on by aggressive paparazzi. She claims a similar incident with photographers trapped her in her car without her baby. My speculation is that her mother instinct kicked in and she made a split-second decision, that's all. Or maybe she really is just a vacuous scatterbrain with no regard for her child's safety. I don't necessarily believe it, but it does make for a more entertaining story.

Dark Crystal the animated series

dark crystalThere's been a lot of talk lately about the upcoming sequel to The Dark Crystal, which will be directed by animation wunderkind Genndy Tartakovsky and combine both puppets and CG backgrounds. What I didn't catch until recently is that there may also be an animated Dark Crystal series which will air as part of Cartoon Network's Toonami block. David Slack, who also worked on Teen Titans, will work on this series. I haven't seen much on this, save for little tidbits here and there, so I guess we'll have to wait and see. The series will apparently work as a kind of prequel to the original film, focusing on life before the Crystal cracked and the Gelfling race was (nearly) wiped out.
