Amazing Race vs. Survivor: Why one works and the other doesn't

amazing/survivorIt might seem crazy to suggest that either one of CBS's two long-running reality series doesn't work, but I'm sticking to my convictions. Survivor has lost the edge it had when it started, and it's no longer a show that works for me.

On the other hand, The Amazing Race continues to set the industry bar high for quality reality (assuming you don't think that's an oxymoron). So, stacking them up, one versus the other, here's how The Amazing Race tops Survivor.

Survivor heading to Canada?

Jeff ProbstFinally, one of my wishes might come true: Survivor is seriously considering moving the show to a colder climate.

Canada, to be precise. Host Jeff Probst reveals that show creator Mark Burnett is thinking about doing the next season in Canada, because they're running out of jungle/island places to go to. They probably aren't really running out of places to go, but after a while all of these places start to look and feel the same.

Probst is worried that a colder place would a.) be worse for the bodies of the contestants and b.) you wouldn't have chicks in bikinis. Well, for the first concern, I think that's the reason to do it. Give these contestants a challenge the other contestants of other seasons never had. And for the second concern, I have the solution.

Hot tub!

Seriously, the show needs a kick in the pants, and a colder world would really reinvent the show a bit.

David Arquette to direct sister Patricia on Medium

Patricia Arquette Medium Brother-SisterHaving a terrific brother myself, I have a great affection for brother-sister teams. Together, they work past the boring notion of sibling rivalry to achieve greatness. Amy and David Sedaris on the New York Theater Workshop stage. Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal in Donnie Darko. John and Joan Cusack in just about every film either one of them has made. Now, another team is looking to make the list of great brother-sister working relationships. David Arquette will be directing big sis Patricia in an upcoming episode of Medium.

Patricia had this to say about the collaboration: "I was always a bossy little girl and being David's older sister I've bossed him around quite a bit. Now that he'll be directing me it will be payback time...I feel so safe with him. I think I'll be able to go to some of my darkest places." That's kinda creepy, but whatever, you work out those family neuroses. When you're done, maybe you could straighten those Baldwins out.

The CW meets Little Miss Sunshine with Crowned

Little Miss AustinThis idea is either profoundly sick or profoundly brilliant. I haven't decided which. The CW has announced an eight-episode reality competition focused on mother-daughter teams working to win a beauty pageant. Now, from what I understand, this is a "mother-daughter" pageant not a "stage mom who wishes to live vicariously through the daughter who robbed her of her youth" pageant. The teams on Crowned will have their relationships tested through clothing, swimwear, interview and dance competitions.

On the Lot looking for talent

steven spielbergLast month Anna mentioned the new reality series from executive producers Steven Spielberg and Mark Burnett called On the Lot. The series, which will air in spring of 2007 on FOX, will pit two teams against one another as they create a short film from a different genre each week. Some readers were curious as to how they might get on the show, and it looks like right now you can go over to the official site and download an application and submit your film. According to the application, you're not allowed to enter if you're running for public office or planning to do so. I was devastated upon hearing this until someone informed me there's not really a place called "Funky Town" and even if there was, they probably wouldn't elect me as their mayor. I guess that means I'm good to go.
