Being a big fan of Cartoon Network's goofy
Batman: The Brave and the Bold, I'm really looking forward to the debut of Marvel's
Super Hero Squad. The show premieres Sept. 19 on Cartoon Network, and Marvel has already launched a
teaser site featuring a fun video preview that could turn out to be the show's opening montage.
Super Hero Squad is based on the toy line and video game of the same name. It features cute and cuddly versions of Marvel heroes, like Wolverine, Iron Man, and the Hulk, protecting Super Hero City from a pint-sized Dr. Doom and other baby baddies. Judging by the preview video, the show will even make room for kid-sized versions of more obscure characters like Fing Fang Foom and MODOK.

Michael Rosenbaum's departure from
Smallville in season seven should have been a heavy blow to a series already suffering from flagging ratings and a bad batch of still-born stories. But the following season turned out to be one of
Smallville's best, introducing a fine female successor to Rosenbaum's Lex Luthor and edging us closer into Superman territory.
With season nine on the horizon, and the show getting its best reviews and ratings in years, the big question is coming up again: Will Rosenbaum return to
Smallville?
Last season we watched a disfigured Lex, played by a different actor whose face was hidden, apparently
die in an explosion. Of course, fans knew instantly that Superman's nemesis was still kicking somewhere (as
confirmed by exec producer Brian Peterson at Comic-Con).

Steve Krantz, the producer who helped bring Marvel characters to the television screen, passed away due to complications from pneumonia on January 4 at the age of 83.
Krantz produced The Marvel Superheroes, a limited-animation series featuring The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Sub-Mariner. The series used artwork taken directly from the comic books, often from different artists so that the character designs would sometimes change within a single episode. Marvel Superheroes was a major influence on the graphic style of the Adult Swim series Minoriteam.
Krantz also produced the Spider-Man cartoon in the late '60s, and was also a producer for Ralph Bakshi's films Fritz the Cat and Heavy Traffic. Bakshi also worked as a writer on Marvel Superheroes. Krantz's other projects included developing series based on books by his wife, the novelist Judith Krantz. His son is 24 executive producer Tony Krantz.

(S01E02) Tonight's episode adds to the puzzle and that's just fine by me. It's still early and, as packed with characters and plot threads as the opener was, this episode seems like the second half of a two hour premiere. We're just getting started, still meeting new characters for the first time, and only Flying Boy has yet to cross paths with any of the other heroes.
We get our first intimations of a named super villain tonight: Sylar. He (it?) likes to collect, or eat, superhero brains. Sylar is Mohinder's father's "patient zero" which I guess means he's either the link to all the heroes, or the first one with powers, or maybe the cause of everything, or, who knows.
Evidently, Mohinder has a hard time entering an apartment without finding a government agent creeping about. This is the second week in a row. But this time at least he meets a super-cutie neighbor -- who luckily handles a gun pretty well for a antique bookstore clerk. But Mohinder needs to have someone to deliver his exposition to, so she comes in quite handy in that way too.

Jon Benjamin was a force behind two of my favorite animated series, Home
Movies and Dr. Katz. He
returned briefly with Lucy, Daughter of the Devil on Adult Swim, but now he's teaming up with David Cross of
Mr. Show and Arrested Development for a new animated series for Comedy Central called Freak
Show. The show centers on a group of super heroes who work as sideshow performers in their day to day
lives. Considering Cross' voice work on Adult Swim shows like Tom Goes to the Mayor and
Aqua Teen Hungerforce my guess is that this new series is going to be hysterical. There's no solid airdate
just yet, though it will most likely air later this year, or in early 2007.
