Google's Super Bowl XL Commercial Archive

Super Bowl CommercialRemember all the ads you saw at last year's Super Bowl? No? Well, me neither, until I found Google's massive archive of them that is. They have what looks like every ad from Super Bowl XL, The Bud Light Secret Fridge, Bud On The Roof, Bud Save Yourself (with the Bear), Hummer Monsters, Mission Impossible III, Nationwide Gondola, Jessica Simpson's Pizza Hut commercial, Taco Bell's Good to Go, Sprint's Locker Room commercial, my favorite, (the one where the golfer claims his phone has crime deterrent, then throws it at the other guy's head to prove it) and many others. If you want a Super Bowl themed trip down commercial memory lane, you got your wish.

Super Bowl XL households second only to M*A*S*H finale? WTF?

This is why I've always taken a network's ratings claims with a huge grain of salt: According to this AP article, Super Bowl XL was seen in 45.85 million homes, second only to the 1983 finale of M*A*S*H in the history of TV. However, the rating itself, 41.6, was only up slightly from last year's game (probably because a rating point represents more homes than it did last year or in 1983). Also the share, which measures the percentage of TVs in use, remained the same at 62.

Super Bowl XL: The Rolling Stones

The excitement that is rock and roll, by and large, has always had difficulty coming across on television. The television screen puts limitations on the visuals of a rock and roll show, especially the feedback the crowd gives the band when they're playing well. Plus, rock and roll is meant to play loud, and no matter how loud you put the volume up on your television, most of the time it just doesn't translate.

However, there have been a few times where rock and roll has transcended the television screen and brought across truly memorable moments. Of course, when The Beatles appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, it was such an historic event that what you heard didn't matter--it was only what you saw. A few years ago, U2 played at halftime of the Super Bowl, and again, although the sound was a bit murky, their performance was so mesmerizing that people still talk about.

This year's Super Bowl halftime show featured The Rolling Stones. As big a fan as I am (I've seen them live over 20 times), I was curious to see how they would come across on television. They've been appearing on TV for over 40 years, so they know the drill, and Mick Jagger certainly knows how to play to the cameras.
