NBC's new show: man loses job and girlfriend, gains a soundtrack

NBC logoHey, if CBS can have a Game Show In My Head, NBC can have music.

The network has given the go-ahead to a new show from All Of Us/Baby Bob writer Jared Bush titled Soundtrack. It's about a guy who loses his job and his girlfriend and then starts to hear the same song in his head over and over and over again. The song doesn't go away until he finds what meaning it has in his life. Then the next episode has him hearing another song and he'll have to find out what that meaning is too.

Green Day will perform Simpsons theme for movie soundtrack

simpsonsIf you want to get your grubby little hands on the soundtrack for The Simpsons movie, you'll have a few options from which to choose.

First, you can pick up the single of Green Day's version of The Simpsons theme, which will come out on July 24, three days before the movie opens on July 27. Green Day also appears in the movie.

You can then buy the full soundtrack through Fox Music's digital music service, or snatch up one of 25,000 soundtracks available in "pink donut" packaging from big box stores like Circuit City, Best Buy and Wal-Mart. The "pink donut" cases were created by Extreme Music.

Rock with Frylock

athfWhile you're in the process of preparing yourself both physically and mentally for the release of The Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters on April 13, make sure you snatch up the soundtrack, which comes out on April 10. I haven't purchased the soundtrack for an animated movie since The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, but I may have to get my greasy hands on this one. It'll feature a brand new version of the ATHF theme from Schooly D, not to mention tracks by The Hold Steady, Mastodon, Killer Mike, and Nine Pound Hammer (the band behind the 12 Oz Mouse theme). The CD will also feature sound bites from the movie and skits.

While this is Adult Swim and Williams Street first foray into animated movies, they've been collaborating with underground musicians for some time now. Check out this page for a bunch of downloadable audio goodness.

Festivus Retro Squad: John Denver & The Muppets - A Christmas Together

john denver and the muppetsI think of The Muppets whenever I hear the song, "The 12 Days of Christmas". As soon as I hear the singers get to number nine, "Nine ladies dancing", I can't help but think "Mee mee mee mee mee" because that's how Beaker sings the line on my all-time favorite Christmas soundtrack, John Denver & The Muppets: A Christmas Together.

The Muppets holiday special originally aired in 1979. It's probably been two decades since I've seen it, since it never airs. I don't remember much about the special and, unfortunately, it's not on DVD. But, at age 30, the soundtrack is the first Christmas-related item I pull out of storage during this time of year.

Album deal for Rachael Ray

rachael rayDon't worry. She's not singing. Because that would be the answer to the question, "What's more painful than watching Rachael Ray?" The cook/talk show host is teaming up with Epic to create soundtracks. Ray says the soundtracks are music that she would listen to or play at a party. Her first soundtrack will be a Christmas album, followed by a kids album. They're called 'How Cool is That Christmas CD', to be released on October 10th; and 'Too Cool for School Mixtape for Kids', to be released on October 31.

Rock out to some Strangers with Candy music

jerri blankIf you're looking forward to the Strangers with Candy movie as much as I am, you should check out these three songs from the movie, currently available for your listening pleasure over on CBS' Late Show site. The songs were written by Paul Dinello and Late Show bandleader Paul Shaffer. The first song, "Betrayal," sounds like a slightly modified version of the main theme of the TV series. I also dig the disco-y funk of "She's A Fig Neutron" which nicely describes Jerri's ample frame and her penchant for both the men and the ladies. Of course, "Schizophrenalize" isn't without its charm, either. All in all, the songs are pretty funny, though I wouldn't mind rocking out to a little Buddha Stalin, too. I guess we'll have to wait and see if he shows up in the movie. Not many people can sing the phrase "diarrhea milkshake" with such passion.
