How many times have you watched a sitcom on TV and thought, "Hey, I could do that?" Last weekend, twenty aspiring writers came together at the LAX Hilton to test that theory.
The Sitcom Room, an exhausting, yet exhilarating two-day event, was the brainchild of veteran TV sitcom writer
Ken Levine. To me, the event was the ultimate summer camp for aspiring writers and/or TV geeks.

(S01E22) I've been wondering all week how Aaron Sorkin would send his final F-U to the NBC brass. I mean when this episode was made, the writing was very clearly on the wall:
Studio 60 was dead in the water. So, the question is, if you're a writer/producer with nearly unlimited power regarding the production of a newly canceled show, what do you do in the last episode to turn a big fat middle finger up at the network who canceled you? Do you end on an unresolvable cliff-hanger? Do you turn in a sub-par episode? Do you break down all pretense of the fourth-wall and cancel the show within the show?
What do you do? How do you really stick it to NBC?

After expressing an interest in becoming involved with a Broadway musical based on the Flaming Lips' album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, television's Aaron Sorkin has announced he's developing a Broadway play about television called The Farnsworth Invention. The name comes from Philo T. Farnsworth, the man often credited with inventing the first TV. The play focuses on Farnsworth and his rival, David Sarnoff, as they fight over who should get credit for the invention, and which direction the medium should take.

Good news for
Studio 60 fans. Despite
persistent rumors of the show's forthcoming cancellation by NBC, a
"back nine" has been ordered - meaning that nine more episodes will be produced to finish out the season. Whether the show makes it past a first season remains to be seen, but it will be given a shot to build an audience.
While I appreciate a literate show and Mr. Sorkin's banterfests, I think a handful of problems persist over at
Studio 60. Starting with, does anyone really care about the Harriet-Matt relationship? I'd much rather see "Josh Lyman" and "the guy from
Friends" at the core of the show. They've got better chemistry, and the show is much more fun when they're on the screen together.

OK, so we know the show is canceled, and we talked about last
night's episode. Here are some more news
tidbits for fans:
- Producer John Wells knows who wins the election, but he's not talking. (The election will be held on the April
2 and 9 episodes; the two hour series finale is on May 14).
- Aaron Sorkin and Tommy Schlamme will not be returning.
- Producers are talking with Rob Lowe about coming back as Sam Seaborn. It all depends on whether he has the
time.

Just because Rob Lowe left
The West Wing during the fourth season doesn't mean he was made at creator/writer Aaron Sorkin (Lowe wanted more screen time and money and it was on the studio end that things broke down). Now Lowe and Sorkin are reteaming for another version of Sorkin's stage play
A Few Good Men. You might remember it from the film version, responsible for every comedian in the world doing a "You can't handle the truth!" impression). Lowe will play the Tom Cruise role. The play opens on August 18 at London's Royal Theater Haymarket.
