The plan from the beginning was that every two years the cast of
Skins would be completely overhauled (almost) to keep it fresh and young. As I started watching the second generation several weeks ago, I realized that most of these kids were so unlikable.
As it progressed, I remembered that I found the first cast almost as unlikable, and realized the pattern of
Skins. The first season of each generation shows us their weaknesses. They are children who've discovered sexuality, but have no comprehension of real world consequences. They don't think about their futures or much of anything beyond the next rush.
Then, in the second season we finally get to see them transitioning into young adulthood. I think it was the jarring slap back to to the uninhibited children that threw me. But still, I needed someone in that young cast to care about. Someone to root for.

I was a huge fan of
Skins long before it came to the US. When you follow television like I do, you sometimes become aware of shows from other countries that the U.S. isn't keen to yet. Which is how I found
Skins when it was first making waves in the U.K. Immediately, I was drawn to it as something I'd never seen before in a teen show.
The show worked so well because of its authenticity, achieved by having a group of real teens write the stories. All the actors were little known real teens, as well. No young-looking 35-year-olds faking it here. To keep it fresh, they rotate out virtually the entire cast every two years.
Now co-creator
Bryan Elsley is looking to apply that same formula to an all new U.S.-based Skins, and after a tense bidding war, MTV has secured the rights. I am glad it's on cable, as the original has some racy content. I just hope MTV doesn't get tempted to turn it into
The Real World: Scripted. Even the fake kids of
Skins are more real than those bozos.

In the DVR era, I have this new problem/blessing that happens to me every year. I jump on board these shows and then just get too busy to keep up with them and they pile up and sit there on my DVR unwatched. As an example, I just finished "Chapter 5" of
John Adams last night; damn that's a good mini-series. But now that 99% of the network shows are wrapping up their seasons, I'm looking at three months of solid catch-up time.
I can also use the time to try out series I've always wanted to get into but just haven't for some reason or another; I'll use that "no time" excuse again. With more videos streaming online at Hulu (thanks ABC), seasons coming out ever faster on DVD and more vintage shows coming out the field is wide open. Of course, I'm probably taking on more than I can handle, but dammit I'm excited!

Here are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.Wings is really one of the more underrated sitcoms of all-time. It bopped along for eight seasons in various time slots and never got any real critical acclaim, but it was a very likable show, entertaining and with some really well-written characters. And now they've released it in a box set, which means I have to go out and buy it. That's happening more and more with shows nowadays: after the single seasons have been released, they come out with a complete set. This irritates some people who have bought the single season sets, but I'm not quite sure what fans expect.
- Cranford - Complete Miniseries (Blu-Ray)
- Death Note - Box Set, Vol. 2
- Exosquad - Season 1

Here are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.
How can there be so many DVDs released in one day and there not be one that I want to buy? I never got into
Stargate, I don't want to own
Dallas on DVD, ditto Reba, and I refuse to buy
Walker Texas Ranger because a.) it's not very good, and b.) it replaced a show that I really loved in the early 90s. I enjoyed
Benny Hill, but I don't know if I enjoyed it enough to own it. So it looks like I'm going to save some money this week.
Yeah, right. Like I won't find something to buy that was released a while ago.
- Alvin & The Chipmunks - The Chipettes
- Ben 10 Alien Force - Season 1, Vol. 2
- The Benny Hill Show - Best of the Early Years
- Captain and the Kings - Miniseries
- Dallas - Season 10
- House of Payne - Vol. 3
