It seems that ever since Brooke Shields embraced her virginity back in the day we've had a fascination with female celebrities and whether or not they've done the nasty. These days, however, it seems less an issue of virginity (or lack thereof) and more about how the celebrity uses it to their advantage. Britney Spears wore her celibacy like a badge of honor, which worked wonders for her image at the time, but the updated, wilder version of Britney embraces her sexuality to an annoying degree. Jessica Simpson also famously remained a virgin until marriage, but the exact moment they lost it seems inconsequential to me. Considering Spears' case specifically, I think virginity is just as much a marketing ploy as anything else. She may have lost her virginity before any of us knew about it, but we weren't going to know about it until it was beneficial to her as a celebrity. That's not a slam against Britney, that's just how stardom works these days.shields-related stories
