On the new Battlestar flick, Justin Timberlake, and the space-time continuum

battlestar cyon toasterNow this is getting ridiculous. There's a rumor on the Web that Justin Timberlake might be cast in the new Battlestar Gactica movie.

At first I didn't know what to make of Universal and Bryan Singer's plans to move ahead with a Battlestar Galactica reboot flick, but now I'm sure I want to see the project die a fiery, fiery death. Casting Justin Timberlake in a new Battlestar movie isn't the problem. The problem is that its just plain ridiculous to have two very different versions of the same beloved franchise out there at the same time. It'll be like Marty McFly running into his future self at the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance in 1955. It could cause a chain reaction that would unravel the very fabric of the space-time continuum!

Patton Oswalt joins the cast of Caprica

Patton OswaltPatton Oswalt will be joining the cast of Caprica on SyFy. He will have a recurring role of Baxter Sarno, a Caprican comedian and talk show host. I can see how the building of artificial life forms such as the Cylons could provide him with a wealth of material.

One plot point revealed in the article is that Daniel and Amanda Greystone will appear on his talk show. If you're going to sell to the public the concept of robot slaves, a talk show is the place to do it.

Oswalt has long since revealed himself to be a sci fi nerd. Other than his role on King of Queens, he's also appeared on sci fi shows like Dollhouse. He's also had a recurring role on The United States of Tara, which while not exactly science fiction is pretty close to it. I think the true reveal for me of his nerdiness was when he co-wrote a Justice League of America comic (he's also written Batman).

Keep in mind that, according to lore of Battlestar Galactica from the mind of Ron Moore, we're all now descendants of Patton Oswalt.

Battlestar's Kat joins Caprica

battlestar caprica luciana carroBattlestar Galactica's Luciana Carro is returning to Syfy with a role on the BSG prequel series Caprica. Fans will remember Carro as Kat on BSG, the cocky Viper pilot and "stims" addict who became a thorn in Starbuck's side. Carro is the first BSG actor to join the Caprica cast, says Battlestar Blog, who heard the news at a recent Wizard World Chicago Q&A.

Kat succumbed to radiation poisoning after flying her last mission in season three of BSG. Carro will most likely be playing a new character on Caprica, since the show takes place more than fifty years before the events of BSG. The news has fans wondering whether or not Carro's Caprica character will be related to Kat.

So Ron Moore ... what do you really think of the Emmys?

Battlestar GalacticaWe know that Caprica is coming to Syfy on January 22nd. We also know that Edward James Olmos is directing the Battlestar Galactica TV movie "The Plan."

An extra little tidbit of news today is Ron Moore's response to the Emmy committee for their snub of the final season of the show. In short, he is not a happy camper.

I wish I could say I was surprised by the Emmy snub, but Hollywood committees do tend to ignore science fiction and fantasy shows when it comes to awards (The Lord of the Rings being the only exception that comes to mind, and that's based on a pretty classic trilogy of books).

The good news is that really good science fiction develops a following that goes far beyond any sort of award recognition. Look at Star Wars. Did that Academy even notice that one? Not really. Yet it still sells loads of merchandise. Battlestar Galactica will likely do the same for some time to come.

Battlestar Galactica: Season 4.5 - DVD review

Battlestar Galactica Season 4.5One of the best parts of this job is the advance copies we get of television DVD sets. In short: Holy frak! The final set of Battlestar Galactica episodes is awesome.

Minor spoilers follow...

There are those who liked the ending and those that didn't. I didn't like the lack of explanation of Kara's return from the dead and found the finale generally anti-climactic. But the series set a high standard and, overall, it's a minor complaint. In most ways, the series is perfect and far better than most of us deserve.

I'll give them this: the people who make the show know their audience ... that audience being nerds. Nerds like information. Hence, the DVD set is full of extras and special features. These include deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and extended versions of episodes, including the three-part finale, "Daybreak." And every episode (let me repeat that:: every episode) has podcast commentary by Ronald Moore.

Virtuality -- An early look

VirtualityI really wish I could have liked the pilot for Virtuality. It was Ron Moore's first new series since the end of his Battlestar Galactica relaunch that wasn't related to that series. Unfortunately, the pilot seems to fall flat and is unlikely to lead into a series.

The concept is solid. It's about a group of 12 space travellers (each of whom could be mistaken for an underwear model) who are on Earth's first interstellar spacecraft, the Phaeton. Earth has become all but unlivable and they are traveling to a nearby star for ten years (five there, five back) and try to save the planet.

Watch the first twelve minutes of Virtuality

Ron MooreFox has posted the first twelve minutes of the pilot (and possibly only) episode of Ron Moore's new series Virtuality. The mastermind behind the revamped Battlestar Galactica could stand a little more respect from Fox. On the other hand, at least they're giving us twelve minutes of the show so we can judge for ourselves.

Frankly, the show should have been taken by SyFy considering how much marketing effort they gave to Battlestar Galactica. On the other hand, they already have Caprica coming up (which undoubtedly will get more respect than Fox will give Virtuality) so they might consider that single show to be "Moore" than enough.

Fox proves its (lack of) faith in Ron Moore

Ronald MooreOriginally, it was slated for July 4th, but now Fox has moved the pilot for Ron Moore's new virtual reality series Virtuality into its Friday Night Death Slot on June 26th. I guess it wasn't even worthy of a holiday showing.

You'd think, given how the relaunch of Battlestar Galactica renewed interest in mature, complex science fiction that Fox would have more faith in the series. They were probably looking for something akin to 24 and all they got was a bunch of crew members playing video games on a long space mission.

On the other hand, the show could legitimately suck. I would tend to doubt it as I've always liked Moore's work on the Star Trek franchise and certainly BSG. Caprica wasn't as good as I'd hoped, but it's only the pilot.

In order for Virtuality to have any chance of survival than all it has to do is get good ratings on a Fox Friday night during the summer. Yeah, good luck with that.

Still no series order for Battlestar creator's Virtuality

ronald d. moore ron battlestar galactica virtuality foxWeeks ago, we reported that Fox would air the two-hour pilot for Ron Moore's Virtuality on July 4 -- the day everyone in America will be eating barbecue, drinking beer and not watching TV. We obviously saw this as a bad sign for the Battlestar Galactia creator's new sci-fi series. Why would the network dump the premiere of a high-concept sci-fi show on a holiday? Probably because they don't believe in the project. Virtuality, the series, is not on Fox's schedule for the upcoming fall season, and rumors about its death have been swirling for weeks.

Our pals at Airlock Alpha recently gave us hope about the series getting be picked up. This weekend, they pointed us to a blog post by Doug Drexler, the CG supervisor for the Virtuality pilot. Here's what Drexler posted:

Is Ron Moore's Virtuality dead in the water?

ron moore virtualityThis week, we learned that Fox will air the pilot for Battlestar Galactica producer Ron Moore's new show, Virtuality, on July 4. I was excited about this news at first. I love BSG and almost everything else Ron Moore has ever produced/written (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Roswell). But now I'm worried.

Fox reportedly ordered a bunch of changes to the show last December, hoping to make it more of a mainstream drama. Now, some folks, like our buddies at Airlock Alpha, seemed convinced that airing the pilot on July 4 is a sign that Fox has already given up on Virtuality.

One more thing, Battlestar Galactica - VIDEO

animal cylon battlestar galactica muppets muppet parodyFor those us Battlestar Galactica nerdz, we're still feeling frakked up, teary-eyed and sniveling following the series' recent exit stage right. Ron Moore laid the show to rest with dignity and deserved pride, which is why our posting the following video might appear silly, childish, and self-indulgent to some.

But still, if you haven't yet seen it, the combination of Muppet and Cylon is a marriage made in LOLheaven, and we can't let Adama and co. get away without witnessing a giant Animal enacting a nuclear holocaust across the twelve colonies. While there are plenty of mash-ups floating around YouTube, this one has most definitely stood the test of time (less than two years, that is), considering that it combines Bear McCreary and Jim Henson (which is essentially something we've been waiting for since the very moment Six blew up the planets and stuff in the BSG miniseries).

Match made in heaven? So say we all.

Wanna watch a bunch of Caprica clips? - VIDEO

stoltz capricaIt's hard to judge a new series by watching a bunch of random clips played out of order an out of context -- but let's do it anyway!

Sci Fi just released seven clips from Caprica, the upcoming Battlestar Galactica prequel series from Battlestar producers Ron Moore and David Eick. (UPDATE: Videos can now be found here.) The show seems to be about humanity's reaction to rapid advances in technology and shifting ideologies. It centers on two families – the Greystones and the Adamas – who are "joined by tragedy in an explosive instant of terror," according to SciFi. Possible spoilers after the jump.

Galactica ends on a high note

Battlestar GalacticaBattlestar Galactica ended with its highest ratings in three years, drawing 2.4 million viewers for its finale. Granted, these are early ratings for the live viewing and don't take into account things like delayed viewings or iTunes purchases. Still, where were all these people during the run of the series?

Something about series finales tend to draw out people with even a modicum of interest in a show. I guess if they weren't there in the beginning, they still want to be there at the end. Mind you, the ratings of Dollhouse still beat BSG with 4.13 million viewers, but there is a world of difference between network and cable. Personally, I used the DVR and caught both.

Of course, this isn't the end of the franchise. Between "The Plan" and the spin-off Caprica, something has to keep people tuned in and the ratings up while the Sci Fi Channel does something stupid like changing its name.

Battlestar Galactica: Daybreak, Part 2 (series finale)

Battlestar Galactica(S04E20) "Frakkity, frak. Don't talk back." (Apologies to Lieber and Stoller)

After four years of some of the best and most adult sci-fi in the history of television, Battlestar Galactica draws to a close with a bang and then a whimper, with an overall satisfying ending that was as morally complex as any episode in the series.

Battlestar Galactica is going to the U.N.

Battlestar GalacticaI'm not sure whether to laugh or cry. A panel discussion is being held on March 17th at the United Nations in New York about Battlestar Galactica and the themes the show covers, including "human rights, children and armed conflict, terrorism, human rights and reconciliation and dialogue among civilizations and faith". Among the panelists are Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Ron Moore and Dick Eick.

This concept does seem a little trivial given the magnitude of the problems in the world today. However, government representatives in the U.N. are still people and if either they're BSG fans or feel a discussion of the issues would be relevant to their work today, more power to them. Mind you, they could have just attended Comic Con and gone to similar panels. I'm still not sure how to react to this.

Wait a minute. The moderator of the panel is Whoopi Goldberg. I've decided to laugh.
