(S03E13) It's a cold Friday, December 13, 1963. The President's been killed and the world as Don Draper knows it has pretty much fallen apart. For most of the season, the ground has been shifting under Don's feet and he's be holding on, trying to right himself and his life. He's tried with Betty. He's tried for Sally and Bobby and Gene -- at least as much as Don is able to try.
With Conrad Hilton he's never been on a level playing field, and from the moment he was forced to sign the contract, Sterling Cooper has not been his domain as it had been. With this episode, this season finale, all was changed and, perhaps, all has been righted. More after the jump.

FOX has ordered up a new batch of American Dad episodes for the 2008-09 season, according to a statement released by FOX today.
I'm happy to see the series return, though I'm not surprised it did. It has been getting great ratings in all the right demographics, and I think its quality has improved considerably throughout this last season. When it began, it seemed a bit too much like Family Guy (both series were created by Seth MacFarlane), but over time I think American Dad has slowly developed a voice all its own, with more emphasis on plot rather than the "anything goes" cartoon style of Family Guy. It's easy to compare the two shows because the character designs are similar, but I think that's where the similarities end.

Does FOX see something in this show that a lot of other people (including me) don't see? I've seen 5 or 6 episodes, and I don't find it that funny. As I've said before, I'd watch a show based around Roger the Alien with the Paul Lynde voice, but I just don't find the show that entertaining. Certainly not on the level of
The Simpsons or
Family Guy.
But FOX has given the green light for
22 more episodes for the 2007-08 season. In fact, the show will probably get better ratings this fall, as it moves into the time slot right after
The Simpsons.

Creating a show for a secondary character can be a tricky thing. For every
Frasier there are five
A Man Called Hawks. It usually just doesn't work, because a character that is brilliant as a supporting character can completely fail in the lead role (all the things that make a secondary character great often disappear when they are thrust into the lead). But here are some characters on current shows I wouldn't mind seeing in their own shows. If the writing is good (and the new supporting cast supports them like they supported the people on their show), it could be worth doing:

Although last night wasn't the funniest episode of
American Dad, I am
enjoying it more and more as it strays from the Stan and Steve don't get along, Hayley and Stan don't get along, Fran
and Stan don't get along type of stories that have been the norm so far. It's got potential, but it just always seems
to fall short for me. It's supposed to be a parody of the uber-rightwing republican family lifestyle, but it doesn't
capitalize on it all that much, it seems to almost promote that some of the times. I do like Roger and Klaus on the
show, so since this episode revolved around Roger, it was about has funny as a
barrel basement of
monkeys. On with the show!

Still the weakest of the "Fox Block" in my
opinion, but
American Dad is growing on me. I like the episodes that don't feature Stan quite so prominently,
so tonight's episode was right up my viewing alley. It always seems to be, that I'm more interested in the side-stories
and sub-plots than the main one. I'm not sure if that's because they always leave me wanting more, or they really are
just the funnier stories. Either way, seeing Klaus and Steve emerge from the broken closet and call Hayley
"boss" cracked me the heck up. On with the show!

So let's see if they can keep the quality of the show up from last week. Yea... nope. It was still a funny episode, but as well as
Family Guy embraces it's raunchy humor, and walking that fine line in much the same way that
South Park does,
American Dad always seems to go just a step too far with it's stupidness, outlandishness and political views. Now before you all start writing to tell me it's supposed to be a satire about right-wingers and their views, I know, I know. It's just that it seems so forced and it's punchlines are done better and funnier in about a dozen different venues, most notably, Jon Stewart's brilliant
The Daily Show. Anyways, on with the recap.
