So. I saw
Rock Star contestant Storm Large in a coffee shop yesterday morning and nearly started hyperventilating. (It's a super small coffee shop and I didn't have the balls to ask for a photo) You see, I have had a bit of a girl crush on her since I saw her perform live
last year. Anyway, she was dropping off her new CD to her friend behind the counter.
I went online and found it and
here it is. You can preview the tracks on
CD Baby and on her
MySpace page (Warning: "Ladylike" is profane, but also awesome). This new album is the first in a pair of CDs she's releasing, called Side One and Side Two. Side One, which came out earlier this month, was recorded with the house band from
Rock Star. She's touring it with her band, The Balls, starting tonight in Seattle. Besides hits such as "Ladylike" and "Beautiful", it also includes a cover of the Pixies' "Where Is My Mind". Side Two comes out early next year.

I just had to drop a quick note to fans of Storm Large, one of the most popular contestants on last summer's
Rock Star: Supernova. I got to see her perform live last night for a public radio program here in Portland, Oregon. The radio show is called
Live Wire (it records once a month at the Aladdin for you P-towners), and it's sort-of like
Prairie Home Companion, but for young people. Storm Large and the Balls, who are a very big deal here in Portland, performed three songs last night for the radio program. She sang two of her originals, "Beautiful" and the uber-popular, PG-rated version of "Ladylike". She closed out the show with a very sultry version of "I'll Be Home for Christmas".
I freely admit that I'm a Johnny-come-lately fan of Storm Large, but... damn, she rocks! I saw her on
Rock Star a few times last summer and the television does her no justice whatsoever. You have to see this woman perform live. Her stage presence is captivating-- probably a combination of her self confidence and her amazing voice. I felt like I was in a trance as I watched her-- she's so damn commanding. Plus, she's drop-dead gorgeous!
For Oregonians, the
Live Wire featuring Storm Large airs at 8 pm on OPB on December 23rd. The radio program also has a podcast version so I'll post a link to that when it comes out during the week of Christmas.

This is the last chance for the rockers to do their thing to impress the voting fans and they really do give it their all. But first a blast from the past. Ryan Star got the nod to do the encore based on fan votes and sings his original
Back Of Your Car. His album will be called Dark Horse (after his name on the show) and he wins a car. Sometimes it seems like the ones who already left the show are getting the better deal.

(
S02E20) There's been talk for weeks about a
fix being in on
Supernova. Certainly with every reality show I have to ask myself how much is truly the natural evolution of the game and how much is about what makes good television. With a competition like this it's even more tempting to speculate. After all, if you were creating a new band and putting your faith in a new lead singer, would you leave it up to fate or the whim of the public? In this case, I think Supernova might do well to listen to what the fans are telling them.

(
S02E19) This week we learn what the watchers of webisodes have known all along, Dilana can't write songs and Lukas doesn't think he needs to try too hard. Both Lukas and Dilana are talented and have been fan favorites since the beginning of the show but neither one of them has really had to battle too hard to stay at the top of the heap. That ends tonight.

(
S02E16) My my, Dilana has a high opinion of herself. She proved this week that she is no media darling. Boasting about her large fan base is not a way to encourage voting. Ryan feels that Dilana is not humble or kind to those who are not as popular ( conveniently forgetting his own treatment of Dana). When the rockers have their press day, Dilana says that Lukas is moody and Toby and Magni are not serious about the band. Honesty or total self-destruction, I'm not sure but she sure isn't winning any fans inside the house.

(
S02E15) The song selection battle gives us a chance to see Dilana naked (nice abs) and Storm feeling angsty and sad until her magical Verizon phone makes it all okay. This week everyone gets a little more competitive. All of the real clunkers are gone but that doesn't mean that there aren't still a few shabby performances in the mix. Not that Dave Navarro and the Supernova guys would notice, tonight they seem to love everyone. Must be the calming influence of Gilby's dog Chopper.

(
S02E14) This week Supernova decides to play with one of the rockers. They ask the audience who should play and the response is loud. Dilana. Cut to a shot of Lukas looking deeply annoyed. Sure enough, Dilana gets the honor of being the first to test out a Supernova song. She's got the look and she definitely doesn't get lost in front of the boys. But will that raspy voice hold out for weeks and weeks of concert touring? Also, (and I hate myself for saying this) would the band be better served by having someone younger as the lead singer?

(
S02E10) Two great ways to judge someone's character are how they react when things are going badly and how they react when things are going well. This is Ryan's week to shine. His performance was great but his attitude is still horrible. Every time they show house shots it seems like Ryan is being a jerk of some sort, especially with the women. Supernova gives him the encore which will unfortunately only feed that ego of his. By contrast, Lukas has been taken down a peg. He is keenly aware that his performance was subpar and admits that he should be bottom three but also thinks he can sing his way out of it. Arrogant yes, but not unbearably so.

(
S02E06) The thing that I am enjoying most about this show is that some of the aspring rock stars actually are trying to get better while those who can't step it up are getting left behind. Tonight's episode begins at the house where everyone takes a look at Dana's performance via cell phone and finds it lacking. Storm and Dilana instruct Dana in how to be more rock star but it's clear she doesn't fit in. Ryan goes so far as to say that he was embarrassed by her performance (he should talk).

They try to stir up some drama between Patrice and Jill when it comes to song choice but let's just get down to the performances...
Patrice,
Helter Skelter -- She sings well enough but as my mate pointed out, she's a bit Liz Phair, cute but not really rock.
Josh,
Come As You Are -- Smiling even during Nirvana? Josh tries to rasp it up and go darker but there's something lackadaisical about his performance
Storm, J
ust What I Needed -- She's definitely sexy and she's got Tommy's attention but I'd like her to tear up the stage a bit more, she's too controlled, I found myself watching the fabulous backing band instead.

(S02E03) Last week, I got accused of being a bit bored by this show. Untrue, I just want the show to really rock. The performances seemed a bit stronger this episode. Here are the songs and my notes:

It turns out somebody already came up with the super-lame Supernova name for their own band. According to
MTV News, the Orange County-based punk band, Supernova, has filed a trademark infringement suit against producer Mark Burnett for this summer's
Rock Star: Supernova. The original Supernova formed in 1989 and released four albums, the most recent in 2000. The band is still alive and kicking: recording a new album and performing gigs next month. The lawsuit names Burnett, his production company, and the three members of the new Supernova band: Tommy Lee, Jason Newsted and Gilby Clarke. The band wants Burnett to make it clear that the television show is not associated with them, wants to prevent Burnett from trademarking the Supernova name, and claims the producers of
Rock Star knew the band existed and was still together. Didn't anyone check out
iTunes before naming the new band?
