It's the season for scary movies - bad scary movies, good scary movies, campy scary movies, any kind of scary movie. And depending on what cable company you subscribe to, there are plenty of free offerings right now on demand.
FearNet is the obvious go-to place for freebies, although it has its detractors hanging around this blog. One of the best choices available now is
Return of the Living Dead III. Unless you're a hardcore horror geek, you may not know this one. And the plot -- a young couple near a military base are torn apart when she becomes one of the living dead -- may not sound exciting. But the first zombie onscreen is convincingly freaky, and the surprise ending is actually kind of a surprise.
FearNet also has
Severed Ties, in which a severed arm comes back to life as a reptilian killing machine. And who doesn't like a good
Garrett Morris/
Oliver Reed team-up? And there are a couple of bigger movies, like
Brian DePalma's
Body Double and
Rob Zombie's
House of 1000 Corpses, and
Sleepaway Camp II and
III, featuring
Pamela Springsteen (Bruce's sister).

Remember the days when a movie came out in theaters, then you waited a year or so for it to come out on video (and going back a bit further, waited for it to be in on VHS or Beta, depending on which player you had), and then waited even longer for it to hit television?
With cable on demand and quick transitions to DVD, that timeframe has been completely destroyed for me. I watched Bobcat Goldthwait's superb film
World's Greatest Dad (starring Robin Williams in a beautifully understated performance) on demand a couple of weeks ago. It's out in theaters this weekend.
I'm also looking forward to seeing Rob Zombie's
The Haunted World of El Superbeasto. Zombie has a great, dark imagination, and the voice talent he's assembled for this animated feature is tremendous. Rosario Dawson and Paul Giamatti are the big names, and there is a laundry list of great cult actors like Sheri Moon Zombie, Danny Trejo, Clint Howard, and the always entertaining Sid Haig. I also have a soft spot for stand-up comedians, since I cover that world often, and this boasts Tom Kenny (yes, he is Spongebob), Brian Posehn, and Harland Williams.

The folks at our sister site
Cinematical are working hard to give you news and reviews of the best -- and worst -- the silver screen has to offer. Here are some of their musings on the latest blockbusters, indies, and everything in between:
- I do not ever, under any circumstances, wish to see Andy Griffith's "O" face. But if you're into that kind of thing, here ya go.
- For all of you Twihards out there: Cinematical has new images from New Moon.
- "Okay. It's like The Blob, but you know, without the blob thing. But it's totally a remake of The Blob. Get it?" It sounds like that's kind of how Rob Zombie's movie pitch went.
- I'm going to see The Final Destination this weekend. I have never seen any of the other movies in the series, and I do not give a single crap about the "plot" or "characters." The point is, it is in 3-D and there are crazy body parts flying around and people getting killed in very awkward ways. Movie WIN.
- Cinematical is not very happy about the Heathers TV show that is in the works.

Rob Zombie will be hosting TCM Underground starting Friday, October 13. The first movie to be shown will be Ed Wood's classic trainwreck, Plan 9 from Outer Space, followed by another Wood film, Bride of the Monster. The movies, according to the official site, will start "around 2 am." Other cult movies to be shown in future episodes include The Crazies, Tokyo Drifter, Dementia 13, The Honeymoon Killers and Lonely Hearts. If you're a fan of these memorable midnight movies, or you just like to talk back to the screen a la Mystery Science Theater 3000, you might want to check these out. Plus, they're on at just the right time so you can enjoy them after stumbling home from a night of heavy partying, or from a night of helping elderly people reach items on the top shelf at Walgreens. You know, whatever it is you do with your Friday nights.
