Jon & Kate draw 9.8 million rubberneckers... including me

Jon & Kate on the loveseat... very awkward...You just knew that the perfect storm of tabloid stories, very effective ads and promos, and a holiday where nothing else was on was going to make for boffo ratings for the Jon & Kate Plus 8 season premiere. But the numbers are staggering by almost any standard: 9.8 million people viewed the train wreck on Monday night, surpassing the numbers for any network -- broadcast or cable -- that night and doubling TLC's previous high water mark. What was that mark? The season four finale of Jon & Kate, of course.

I can't cast any aspersions on the size of the audience, because I gladly flipped on TLC to see the 73 minutes of extreme discomfort. And, boy, did I hate myself for doing it.

Regis needs work, to host Oscar red carpet show

Regis PhilbinApparently, holding the Guinness World Record for the most time spent in front of a television camera isn't enough. The AP is now reporting that 76-year old Regis Philbin has been signed to host the red carpet show for the upcoming Oscars. Dennis Doty, producer of the show, says he's a great host because "he knows everyone, and everyone loves Regis." The arrivals show for the 80th Annual Academy Awards airs at 5/4c February 24, 2008 on ABC.

I bet Ryan Seacrest is pissed. How dare a hosting gig come up and not be his. How do they expect him to become the new king of all media? But Philbin is one of the most beloved people. I mean seriously, does anyone not like the man? How do you achieve that level of likeability, anyway? I can tell you from personal experience it's not achieved by offering free back massages to everyone you meet. And I thought everyone liked massages, but no! Apparently, they like restraining orders more.

Army Wives scores record ratings

army wivesGood gravy.

I told you recently that Lifetime's new series, Army Wives, was worth checking out, and apparently I'm not the only one who tuned in to the new series. Variety reports that the first episode scored the highest rating in Lifetime's history for a series premiere.

Bob Newhart: home to funky Emily - VIDEO

bob newhart showTelevision buffs should know that the catchy theme to the Bob Newhart Show, written by Lorenzo Music, is titled "Home to Emily," but I added that "funky" to the title of this post because what I found on YouTube is not the original theme, but a funk version recorded by the Inner City Jam Band.

The music comes from a YouTube channel belonging to a vinyl collector, and I think it's pretty cool. I kept imagining Bob strutting through Chicago in bellbottom pants and a gigantic afro, and everyone on the series replacing the ubiquitous "hi, Bob" with "hi, Funky Bob." You can skip to about 1:38 to hear the actual song in its entirety, or you can listen to VinylJunkie's introduction and stare at his insane collection of records. Seriously, that's a pretty sweet collection.

Lost Tomb of Jesus to air on Discovery

Lost Tomb of Jesus"King of the World" James Cameron takes on the "King of Kings" Jesus Christ. Announced in a press conference earlier today and slated for a Discovery Channel debut on March 4th is executive producer Cameron's The Lost Tomb of Jesus. The documentary introduces new archaeological evidence that shows where the remains of Jesus of Nazareth and his family were kept, and by "his family," Cameron's not talking about Mary and Joseph. The evidence reveals that Jesus may have had a son named Judah with Mary Magdalene.

Jennifer Hudson signs with legendary producer

jennifer hudsonFinally! Former American Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson has signed a record deal with powerhouse producer Clive Davis, who also has Aretha Franklin and Barry Manilow, along with other Idol winners, on his label. Hudson was on the third season of American Idol, where she was the sixth contestant (in the top 12) voted off the show. There was a lot of outrage after Hudson was ousted-- even Elton John weighed in and called Americans racist for voting Hudson off the show. Apparently it took a role on Dreamgirls, alongside Beyonce, Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy--plus, some love from Oprah--to get Clive Davis' attention. I look forward to a Jennifer Hudson album. This girl has one hell of a voice, and a sassy attitude to match!

America's most talented signs record deal

bianca ryanThe winner of this summer's Gong Show America's Got Talent has signed a recording deal with Columbia Records/SYCO, which is Simon Cowell's wing of the company. Bianca Ryan, a 12-year-old "vocal prodigy" (as the press release states), won America's Got Talent on August 17th. She beat out jugglers, quick-change artists and a rappin' granny for the prize. If you're not among the 12 million people who watched America's Got Talent, you can see Bianca here on YouTube. The kid sure can sing.

Her first album comes out on November 14th. It includes covers of "I Believe I Can Fly", "The Rose" and "You Light Up My Life" as well as a number of original songs, including one written by Diane Warren.

YouTube to offer every music video ever created

take on meAccording to BBC News, YouTube founder Steve Chen is working on a plan to "have every music video ever created" on his website within 18 months. He's in negotiations with various record companies for the deal and, when all those videos are up and running, users will be able to include music videos in their personal profiles.

I'd have to go old school and include the most memorable music videos from my childhood in the '80s when MTV actually played music videos. My choices:

David Blaine: Drowned Alive

david blaineWhen the main emphasis of your ABC special is trying to hold your breath for longer than eight minutes and fifty-eight seconds, the special itself probably doesn't need to be longer than a half an hour. You can try to stretch it to an hour, but you'd have to add a lot of filler. If you go for two hours, then the special becomes both an endurance test for the magician and  the home audience.

Well, as you probably know by now, David Blaine did not break the record for holding one's breath underwater the longest. Granted, if he actually did spend seven days underwater and his body had taken the punishment it supposedly had, lasting for seven minutes and eight seconds was a feat in and of itself. Of course, to get to that point we had to sit through a lot of shots featuring Blaine sitting underwater among sharks and stingrays, or falling into water, or talking about water. Also, we get to hear about his "journey" to his "human aquarium" at Lincoln Center, including all the crazy stunts he had done up to that point.

How sick is David Blaine really?

david blaineI've been hard on David Blaine in the past for the same reason a lot of other people give him flak: he has a tendency to call himself a magician and then do bits of public performance art that really have nothing to do with magic. When he starved himself over the River Thames, I became indifference personified, but I have to admit his recent stunt has me more intrigued than I'm willing to admit. Has he really been in that watery globe for a week? If we're to believe reports, he has, and it's been taking a toll on his system. Several news outlets have been reporting that health experts who have been watching Blaine are concerned for his health. One expert says the finale of this stunt, which will air tonight on ABC, may not be possible, as Blaine could very well blackout once he's pulled from the globe.  In case you haven't heard, Blaine plans on emerging from the globe, having himself wrapped in chains, and then submerged again to try and beat the record of holding one's breath underwater, which currently stands at eight minutes and fifty-eight seconds. My guess is that the "concerns from medical experts" is all just part of the publicity machine. That, of course, is only my non-expert opinion, but to paraphrase magician Penn Jillette, magic is essentially just another word for lying.

TiVo will let you record two shows at once

tivoSure, having a TiVo is nice, but what happens when you want to record two shows that are on at the same time? Starting the first of May, new Tivo boxes will be available that will allow viewers to record two shows simultaneously. Currently the boxes, like VCRs, only allow a person to record one show at a time. This is a very cool move on TiVo's part, I think, and it's one the company needed to make as it tries to set itself apart from other DVR manufacturers. The new boxes will hold up to 80 hours worth of programming, and will cost $99.99 (but that's after the activation fee and rebate).

Tivo ain't goin' down without a fight

tivoTivo has been suffering in the marketplace due to so many people opting to purchase satellite systems with DVRs already included, as opposed to buying the stand alone Tivo boxes. A new lawsuit the company filed recently against EchoStar, however, could change that. At least, that's what experts are predicting. The case centers on a key patent in DVR technology, one which Tivo believes EchoStar stole for its own DVR system. Tivo argues that EchoStar is infringing on its patent, thus making it difficult for the company to compete. If Tivo wins the case, which reports say is all but inevitable, the company would see damages paid from EchoStar possibly as high as $300 million. In addition, it would result in licensing deals with cable companies who currently use their own DVRs.

Speak of the devil

nikki mckibbon; american idolJust when I was convinced that American Idol season one hanger-on Nikki McKibbon had dropped off the face of the earth... Presto! She appears (looking a little like Shirley Manson, don't ya think?).

Nikki, number one on my list of American Idol contestants who stayed on the show too long, has a new single and... DVD? Her single isn't online yet, but her record company promises that it will be here soon. Nikki announces her new record deal on her personal website. Sounds like it's going to be a rock album. I know I bash her as hanging on too long, but she sounds so positive about her new album, that I can't help but hope for the best for her.

Good-bye City, hello country for John Corbett

john corbett musicEven when he played Aidan on Sex and the City, John Corbett has always been a little bit country. That's why he gave up acting in 2005, headed to Nashville, and grew out his chops. He spent the last year writing and composing songs for a country album with guitarist/friend Tara Novick. Now he has a self-titled album and a video, which you can see on AOL. The video is for a song called Good to Go, and it features your usual country stuff: hay bales, horses, tractors, and dirt. Oh yeah, and it also has a few cameos by Bo Derek, John's real-life girlfriend. You can hear samples of all the songs on his debut album over at his official website. Corbett isn't signed on with a record label because he didn't like their recommendation of waiting a year to create a "marketing strategy" for his album. It's his first album, but it's also a life-long dream for him, so he probably wanted to start the country music part of his life as soon as possible. Even if you don't like the style of music, you've got to admire the guy for walking away from it all to pursue his dream.

Paris proclaims her new album is "hot"

Proving that she really does have a one-word vocabulary, Paris Hilton told reporters that her upcoming album is "hot". I believe that's also how she described Brazillian men, her t-shirt, her dog, and just about everything else under the sun. So... there's your benchmark.

Paris is prepared for a barrage of criticism when her album finally comes out (it was supposed to be in August but now there's no official date), but she says she sounds good and people will be surprised. You know what would surprise me? If she just drifted off into obscurity.
