MTV has second thoughts about weed joke - VIDEO

MTV logoThere's one thing to do a stupid joke that you shouldn't have done, and then it's another to not even have the balls to follow through on the joke.

Case in point: last night's MTV Movie Awards. Seth Rogan and James Franco presented the award for Best Summer Movie of the Year So Far, and while doing it, they did a little plug for their new movie Pineapple Express. They pulled out a bag of fake (?) weed and smoked (?) it onstage, explaining more than once that it was fake and that kids shouldn't smoke it. But take a look at the video after the jump below. As the joke starts, MTV's cameras pull away to a shot that seems to be taken from across the street. You can't even tell what Rogan and Franco are doing on stage, you can only hear them inhaling and introducing the nominees in the category.

David Faustino: Arrested ... with weed

David FaustinoAl and Peg aren't going to be too happy about this.

David Faustino, aka Bud Bundy on the long-running FOX comedy Married...With Children, was arrested on Saturday night in Florida. Seems the actor was not only arguing with his ex-wife in the middle of an intersection - screaming obscenities, etc - but he was also "intoxicated." Not sure if that means booze or pot or both, but the police did find 20 grams of pot inside his pocket.

The Smoking Gun has the police report, and the mug shot (of course). Faustino looks rather stunned.

Modine joins cast of Weeds

matthew modineMatthew Modine will be joining the cast of the Showtime series Weeds when the program returns for its third season on August 13 (the second season ended last October). Modine will appear in ten episodes of the fifteen-episode season as Sullivan Groff, a land developer for a Christian mega-church.

I've been a fan of Modine since Full Metal Jacket, so it'll be nice to see him as a regular on Weeds. He's appeared on television before, most recently in The Bedford Diaries and in roles on The West Wing and Law & Order: SVU.

Zooey Deschanel and Carrie Fisher will also make cameo appearances in the third season.

Has Top Chef's Padma got the munchies?

Padma Lakshmi Salman RushdieMan, Top Chef has gained some serious momentum these past few weeks. The hazing incident, the tight-lipped complaints about Padma, the crappy, producer-driven elimination of Sam in favor of an Ilan vs. Marcel match-up. (Got spoilers? Oh, yeah, but don't click here unless you want to know who gets paprika-ed in the end.) Today's Top Chef bombshell - Padma's a pothead, and I'm not referring to her affinity for Le Creuset cookware. According to our friends over at Best Week Ever, Padma enjoys toking up on the set. Allegedly, this was a fairly regular occurrence.

Nicole Richie arrested for DUI

Nicole RichieAre headlines like that even surprising anymore?

The Simple Life's (emphasis on SIMPLE) Nicole Richie was arrested early this morning in Burbank, CA for going the wrong way on the 134 freeway. Witnesses called the police, and when police got to her car, she admitted she had taken Vicodin and smoked pot. But she wasn't drunk on booze, thank heavens, which means she's being responsible.

Two interesting aspects to this story: one, the police have told TMZ.com that they aren't going to release Richie's mug shot, which means it can't be added to the Hall of Fame. And two, the police report lists her height as 5 feet 1 inches and her weight as 85 pounds. Which basically means she weights nothing, and when she turns sideways she vanishes completely. She should join Heroes!

Update: the TMZ.com story has been updated with Richie's booking photo.

The Daily Show: November 27, 2006

Jon Stewart"Mess O' Potamia": Of course, we've been stuffing our fat faces full of turducken or participating in Black Friday (or Cyber Monday and it's buddy, Identity Theft Tuesday... the mention of which caused me to do the weirdest little laugh) to really know what's been going on in the Middle East, so here's a quick update... Iraq just experienced its bloodiest week since the beginning of the war. Matt Lauer says it's okay to call it a civil war now. We've been in Iraq longer than we fought in World War II. John Oliver is still awesome. That is all.

Reno 911!: The Investigation Continues (season finale)

reno 911(S04E07) After taking a week off for the William Shatner Roast, Reno 911! returns for the season finale, and we finally get to find out who it was that murdered Sheriff Chechekevitch with peanuts.

While the gang tries to figure out who did it, they also have to attend to the usually police business, which includes confronting a man at a carnival with a stage built into the front of his pants that hides what he refers to as an albino snake that "grows rigid in your grasp." Jones and Garcia can't see nor touch it though, because it's very sensitive to light and it's really more for women. The officers also answer a call from a pot dealer who's complaining about people trying to buy pot on a Sunday when he's closed. The officers threaten to arrest him for selling pot and the dealer threatens to arrest them for trespassing. When Garcia points out he can see the marijuana through the window, the dealer insists that's only ditch weed, and the good stuff is in the back with the cocaine.

Attention, stoners! The pot's not real -- VIDEO

weeds; new zealand; security camera
The billboard advertisements for Showtime's Weeds are driving stoners crazy in New Zealand. The billboards are three dimensional, with giant bags of pot bulging off of them. New Zealanders keep stealing the "pot" from the billboards, so the advertising company set up security cameras to catch the thieves in the act. At least one stoner takes a tumble while trying to score some major weed. It's just the latest in Weeds' creative promotion campaigns that have included brownies, scratch-and-sniff pot fliers, and the tagline, "Putting herbs in the suburbs".

Security camera video is after the jump.

Weeds new ad strategy: scratch n' sniff pot flier

WeedsYou smell that? It's called creativity.

In an effort to drum up even more "buzz" for the second season of Weeds (it premieres this Monday night), Showtime placed an ad in the August 24 issue of Rolling Stone. What a great idea. Advertisements! This ad was special though. Similar to the hundreds of fragrance ads offering whiffs of Paris Hilton's latest vomit inducing stench, the Weeds ad had a scent strip of it's own.

Guess what it smelled like?

I suppose all we have to do now is wait for the news to report on the idiot teenager who got a hold of four or five of the ads, rolled them up into a big fattie, and got sick from inhaling all the ink fumes. Oh and if you want to see what the ad looks like, I placed it after the jump. Just don't bother scratching your computer screen. I tried already.

Greg Brady, pot smoker - VIDEO

greg bradySome activities aren't hindered too much by a little pot smoking, such as performing dental surgery or piloting commercial aircraft. Trying to act on a popular sitcom when you're stoned, however? Well, that's just plain dangerous. Barry Williams, in his autobiography I Was a Teenage Greg, recalls a scene he did for the Brady Bunch during which he was extremely high. It's subtle, and if I didn't actually know he was high I don't know if I would have noticed anything that odd about his performance, but Destiny-land has some excerpts from Williams' book where he writes about making up dialogue, doing some of his own improvisations, and developing some kind of Zen connection with his bicycle. He does seem a little out of it, and watch how he trips over his bike pump as he walks over to the car. The video is after the jump:

Strangers with Candy: The Trip Back

strangers with candy(S01E10) Well, kids, this is the finally episode of Strangers with Candy, season one. I hope everyone enjoyed this little trip down memory lane and that you found these reviews to be equal parts informative and arousing. This episode brings everything full circle and Jerri ends up back in prison again by the end, though she informs us she'll be out in time to start school once the summer is over.

At the beginning of the episode, Jerri is elated to learn she's getting a D in history, which means she'll actually be able to pass and move on to her sophomore year. Unfortunately, she befriends a stoner who gets Jerri hooked on pot and she begins to neglect her homework. She also makes a bong out of clay in art class, which Jelineck correctly points out is missing a carb hole. Jelineck tries to persuade his students not to smoke marijuana, telling them he once tried it but that "the only thing it fixed was my life."

Sports Night: The Apology

Sports Night castDo not adjust your web browser. You are now entering the Retro Squad, where we are reviewing past episodes of your favorites shows, in order, every week.

(S01E02)
No one mixes comedy and drama better than Aaron Sorkin. I don't mean in that "dramedy" kind of way (ugh, I hate that term), I mean in a natural, realistic way. You saw it all the time on The West Wing, and also on Sports Night. It's in particularly fine form in this episode, one of my favorites.

Dan is in trouble with the network for saying in an Esquire interview that marijuana should be legalized. Meanwhile, Jeremy puts together his first highlight reel, and Natalie tells Dana to show an interest in Casey now that he's divorced.

Stoner visits The Price is Right

bob barkerThere seems to be differing opinions as to its origin, but the number 420 has been synonymous with marijuana culture for some time. It's a seemingly innocuous phrase that lets stoners speak freely of their exploits while around grown ups and other authority figures, like, oh, let's say Bob Barker. The Consumerist found a clip on YouTube (watch it after the jump) in which a young man on The Price is Right can't help but bid $420 on everything. Okay, that's mildly amusing, but someone should tell the kid that his "joke" pretty much guaranteed he wouldn't win, or at least would narrow his chances considerably. It would be like going on Wheel of Fortune and only allowing yourself to use the first ten letters of the alphabet. Also, kids should know that a marijuana reference is a gateway reference, and eventually you may end up referencing heroin on Jeopardy. Also, did Bob get the reference, or was he just playing dumb? I can't decide. He's old, but he seems hip. Anyway, check it out:

French confiscate Weeds merchandise

pot lrafWhile I certainly have no moral issues with pot use, I've never understood why a person would wear a shirt with a huge pot leaf on it. I mean, I love blueberry waffles but I'm not going to wear a shirt with a picture of blueberry waffles on it, even though it would obviously be the coolest shirt ever. Of course, if you're trying to promote a TV show called Weeds you'll probably have a few pot leaves on your garments. Just don't tell the French.

While in Cannes, Lionsgate, which produces the Showtime series, had their booth visited by French officials, who confiscated boxes of shirts and caps with pot leaves on them, claiming they encourage drug use. The producers were asked to provide a script, an episode of the show, and a letter saying the garments do not promote drug use.
