Sony plans TV and movie download service

Sony BraviaWhile Apple is the undisputed king of music downloads, no company dominates the video download space yet. Well, it looks like Sony wants to make a bid for the lead position. The Wall Street Journal reports that the company that was once synonymous with portable music players (remember the Walkman?) before Apple came along wants to compete with iTunes in the video download space.

Sony may have the goods to pull this off. Part of the reason Apple has been so successful is because the company has both hardware and software: iTunes an the iPod. Sony's already got the hardware for video: the Playstation3, the Playstation Portable, and Bravia television sets. And Sony's got Sony Pictures content.

Sony announces PVR add-on for PS3

PS3 PVRWe knew this was coming, but we didn't expect it so soon. Today Sony announced the PlayTV, a combination dual digital TV tuner and personal video recorder for the Playstation3. The two tuners are HDTV ready, and can handle video up to 1080p.

The PlayTV will be available in the UK, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain early next year. The digital TV tuner uses the DVB-T format and is built for European use. There's no word whether an ATSC or NTSC version will be released in the US anytime soon.

The PlayTV will let users watch live TV or record programs for watching or transferring to a Playstation Portable. It's not clear whether there will be DRM restrictions that prevent you from transferring recordings to a PC or other portable device.

Sony could turn your PS3 into a PVR next year

Sony PlayStation3Warwick Light, the marketing boss at Sony's New Zealand division tells The Press that the PlayStation3 that the company hopes to release a digital television tuner for the gaming console next year.

That would essentially let you turn your PS3 into a digital video recorder. The system already has the key components including a hard drive, graphics processor, Blu-Ray/DVD support, and networking capabilities.

The key word in Light's comments is "hopes." As in "hopes to release." That's not quite as firm as "plans." So we won't know for certain whether Sony will release a digital tuner and PVR software in New Zealand for a while. And we also don't know if there are any plans to launch a similar device/service in the US. But aside from the fact that a PS3 has a relatively small hard drive for recording HDTV, there's no reason the equipment couldn't handle standard or high definition television capabilities with a USB tuner.

A glimpse of the new Aqua Teen video game - VIDEO

aqua teenSave for Super Mario Kart on the N64, I haven't had much interest in video games since my old Nintendo Entertainment System. My brain and motor functions can't deal with the first person point of view and controllers with six hundred buttons. Give me a nice simple left to right scroller and I'm a happy man.

Jackass: the video game

jackassThat's right, fans of Jackass, the popular MTV series that spawned two feature films is being turned into a game for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS. You can pick up your copy on September 24. Or, you can pick it up after September 24. Or you can order it online and not have to pick it up at all. Or you can use your money to buy a jar of pickles, what the hell do I care?

Coca Cola: "Give A Little Love"

I think I saw this during the trailers down at the local cineplex, but this is the first time I have seen it on TV. At first, it's a pretty convincing video game commercial. I suspected to see something about the latest Grand Theft Auto ripoff for the XBox 360 or PlayStation 3.

The tables quickly turn as it is another in Coke's "make the world a better place" line of ads. It goes right back to buying the world a coke and all that jazz. This one won't reach those classic commercial levels, but it's solid. I like the buildup as things get more and more chaotic right up to the grand finale, complete with dancing mice and motorcycle cop pyramids. Not even in the running for best commercial, but cute.

Coming this winter: American Idol karaoke game

american idol karaokeKaroake Revolution is releasing an American Idol version of its game for PlayStation 2, complete with original American Idol tunes and judgements from Randy and Simon. Players can cover one of 40 songs, including Taylor Hicks' "Do I Make You Proud", Bo Bice's "The Real Thing", Ruben Studdard's "Flying Without Wings", and Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway". You can also channel William Hung, by singing "She Bangs". Once you've finished your song, Randy and Simon will have some remarks for you. Paula Abdul's not involved, but you can cover her '80s hit "Straight Up".

This sounds like a game for the pre-teen set at slumber parties or their very first boy-girl parties. I can see it now: an 11-year-old girl's night is ruined when Simon tells her she's the worst singer ever.
