The list is broken down into five different categories: Leaders & Revolutionaries, Heroes & Pioneers, Scientists & Thinkers, Artists & Entertainers, and Builders & Titans. This year, Miley Cyrus, Hannah Montana herself, is #59. And the weird thing is, it's under the Scientists & Thinkers category.

OK, that's not true (she's under Artists & Entertainers), but it got me thinking that there must really be a shortage of influential people in the world today.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD! MAGICAL SPOILERS!

On today's edition of Oprah, which many people in the country have already seen, magician/stunt artist David Blaine attempted to break the world record for a person holding their breath. Did he actually do it? Harpo Productions, Oprah's company, is developing a Dr. Oz talk show to commence fall of 2009.

According to insiders, the Harpo team had meetings with distributor in Chicago last month. A medical talker with Doc Oz, which I bet will be called Ask Dr. Oz -- the name of his successful segments on Oprah's show -- would follow in the footsteps of Dr. Phil. Remember, Dr. Phil McGraw began his life as a talker by appearing on Oprah in infrequent hours that were a de facto pilot for his own talk show. Dr. Phil then launched in 2002, as a Harpo production, and has been a big time hit. He's even challenged Oprah in some markets.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

AOL readers rate TV talk show hosts

Filed under: Late Night, Daytime, Celebrities, Talk Show, TV Squad Lists
So, AOL TV did a poll about America's favorite talk show hosts and 1.3 million people made their feelings known. Interesting results. I didn't agree with some of them, like who I like waking up with. Diane Sawyer was the top choice, but I'd go for the second place finisher, Matt Lauer. As for whom to go to bed with -- TV talk show wise, that is -- I can't believe most of the people chose Jay Leno. Is he really that popular? I prefer David Letterman; I'm a sucker for the Top Ten lists.

Gallery: Talk Show Hosts
<a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/talk-show-hosts/721022/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/talk-show-hosts/721028/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/talk-show-hosts/721032/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/talk-show-hosts/721034/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/talk-show-hosts/721035/">

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Everybody's suing Oprah

Filed under: TV Royalty, Daytime, Celebrities

Did Oprah's production company steal the idea for her new hit show Oprah's Big Give?

That's the accusation made by a Boston woman, whose lawsuit against Winfrey has just been dismissed in a Massachusetts court. The woman is appealing the decision.

The woman says that she came up with the idea for a show very similar to Oprah's Big Give called The Philanthropist. She sent the proposal to Harpo Productions (Oprah's company) in 2005, and they wrote her back asking for more details. When she sent more details, they told her that they weren't interested in the idea. Then, in 2006, Oprah announced on her show that she was going to give viewers money to help out others, which eventually led to Oprah's Big Give.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Oprah makes a deal with Kirstie Alley

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Celebrities, Talk Show
Kirstie Alley is coming back to the small screen and Oprah's got her. Harpo Productions has signed Alley for future TV projects. It could be a sitcom like Fat Actress, it could be a talk show, like the one she shopped around last year, but in whatever format, Harpo will be behind it. The store has now opened, down the street from her studio, and The Chicago Sun-Times has all the details.

Besides all of the stuff you know you'd be able to buy at the store (Oprah books, O magazine, books by Oprah-endorsed people such as Maya Angelou, Dr. Mehmet Oz and Bob Greene), you can also get $300 Gianfranco Ferre brown crocodile ankle boots, velour jogging suits, and polo shirt/leash outfits for your dog.
The Harris Poll has released their annual list of the 10 favorite TV personalities, and Oprah actually came in second (after being on top for five years). The first place winner? Believe it or not, it's Nancy Grace.

OK, just kidding about that. Number one is actually Ellen DeGeneres, who was number eight last year.
Winfrey and Discovery Communications announced a deal today that will have the Discovery Health Channel given to Oprah and switched to The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN - really!). The audience goes...well, berserk. You really can't understand what it's like if you haven't seen it. Imagine The Beatles, circa 1964. Then multiply by 6.

Yesterday she went to Macon, GA, the city that has given her show the best ratings over the years. To show her thanks, she gave her audience thousands of dollars worth of electronics, clothing, and food. I really hope she had medics on hand, because the audience when just as crazy for body lotion as it did for an LG fridge with a built-in HDTV. After the jump is the full list of stuff the Macon audience got and you didn't (and check out the video highlights).

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Like, OMG you guys!
Miley Cyrus, aka Hannah Montana, from the Disney Channel show of the same name, will sit down with Oprah Winfrey tomorrow and chat. THIS IS TOTALLY AWESOME. Seriously. She's probably going to talk about...well...I'm guessing her show. Her dad Billy Ray Cyrus (he plays her dad on the show too) will also be on the show. But it's a fun way to see who's making what. Some of the people you pretty much assume will be on the list, but there are a few surprises too.

Oprah is indeed on top again. From June 2006 to June 2007 she made $260 million. I could pay off my Visa with that money. Number two isn't even on TV anymore: Jerry Seinfeld. He made $60 million during that year. I won't spoil the rest of the list for you, but let's just say that the top twenty includes two people from American Idol, someone from a reality show featuring models, and a whole bunch of talk show hosts, both daytime and nighttime.

The list is also a TV show. The Forbes TV 20 will premiere on E! tomorrow night at 5pm.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Maya Rudolph leaves Saturday Night Live ... um, I mean stays!

Filed under: Late Night, Saturday Night Live, Celebrities

Contrary to many, many reports that have been circulating this past week (including one from TV Guide's Michael Ausiello a few days ago), Maya Rudolph has indeed left Saturday Night Live. The news is confirmed by NBC.

This is too bad. Rudolph really grew on me over the years, and I loved many characters she did, including Oprah, Whitney Houston, Donatella, and one half of those Bronx women who host a local cable show. Funny, I always thought that Amy Poehler would be next to leave, following Tina Fey to a career in movies and her own TV show. But Rudolph has been on the show for several seasons and good for her with going on to the next thing in her life.

SNL's season premiere is this Saturday, with guests Lebron James and Kanye West.

Update: Actually, she changed her mind and is now staying.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

David Letterman will appear on Oprah

Filed under: Daytime, Celebrities, Talk Show
This is going to be one of those things I never delete from my TiVo. I can't believe it: David Letterman has agreed to be on Oprah's show. He'll be on the episode that airs September 10th.

I would say this officially marks the end of the Dave-Oprah feud, as if it ever really existed. Supposedly, the "feud" started when Dave did a disastrous job of hosting the Academy Awards and kept saying "Uma. Oprah". At one point, Oprah did tell Time magazine that she didn't want to go on Dave's show because she always felt like the butt of his jokes and that made her uncomfortable. Oprah did finally appear on Dave's show in 2005 when she launched The Color Purple on Broadway. It's about time that Dave repays the favor.

What on earth is she going to ask him? Will he ever give her a serious answer? Do you like to eat? Well, I've got a site for you, but fair warning: it will consume all of your time today.

It's Frank DeCaro's site. He's not on The Daily Show anymore, but he's got quite a site, including this section where you can find a massive list of recipes from celebs! You can try Bitter and Booze from The Dick Van Dyke Show's Richard Deacon, which mixes semi-sweet chocolate chips, whipped cream and brandy (your teeth will ache but you'll be too drunk to care). Or how about Wheel of Fortune star Vanna White's Layered Pea Salad? Martha Stewart loves Bourbon Balls (and check out the pics in her section too). Jim Nabors makes a mean Alabama Chili, and the original Bionic Woman Lindsay Wagner's contribution is a Tabbouleh Salad. Then there's the aforementioned Turkey Potpie recipe from Oprah.

There's a ton more too, and you can search by name or type of food.

Read | Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Oprah weighs in on Imusgate

Filed under: News, OpEd, Watercooler Talk, Talk Show
Don Imus' career on television is done, but television is not done with Don Imus.

Yesterday, the women of TV talk weighed in on the "Imusgate" fiasco.
On the heels of a recent interview with Matt Lauer on The Today Show, Al Sharpton decided yesterday to make an encore presentation of his opinions with Meredith Vieira. This visit was more targeted at addressing the racist/chauvinist double standards in the music industry. Hmm, no wonder Lauer didn't score this interview -- it was worthless. I'm scratching my head. Where is the logical nexus between Don Imus and rappers?

In a somewhat predictable move, Oprah Winfrey sat down with the Rutgers woman's basketball team and discussed the situation in grand Oprah style.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Here's the lineup for CNN's salute to Larry King

Filed under: TV Royalty, Celebrities, Talk Show

As we've mentioned before, Larry King is celebrating 50 years in the news business, and all next week CNN is going to mark the occasion with a week of special Larry King Live shows. No doubt the paparazzi will be hounding her more than ever, but you know that the traditional media-types are also calling for the story. At some point, Britney will talk. Was she an alcoholic? Was it drugs? Exhaustion? Or post-partum depression? Inquiring minds need to know!

But, who will she talk to? The options are varied. She could go to Oprah or Barbara Walters-- those two would be the biggies. Katie Couric is no doubt calling. And Matt Lauer. And Diane Sawyer. People magazine is a possibility, or maybe even something a little more upscale like Vanity Fair. There's always David Letterman, who frequently gets surprise visits from Britney. (Although, that would be a big letdown because ol' Dave will probably let her off the hook after a joke or two)

Read | Permalink | Email this | | Comments
