The reverberations caused by the
writers' strike continue to affect how the networks are doing business. Case in point: according to
The Hollywood Reporter's James Hibberd, the networks may be
more generous with renewals than they have in the past, due to the fact that even hit shows have been returning to diminished ratings. My guess is that, after a three-month break, most people realized they didn't give two craps about things like Meredith and McDreamy's latest breakup. But it may just be that the weather's nice outside.
Anyway, Hibberd goes on to mention the current status of some of the most prominent "bubble" shows. The good news:
Reaper,
Old Christine, and
HIMYM and
Moonlight have shifted over towards the "likely to certain" end of the spectrum, and
Boston Legal will likely survive for another year. The bad news:
Shark,
Men In Trees (which is
already gone, according to reports)
, Cashmere Mafia, and
October Road are likely gone. And there's still no real feel for what's going to happen with
Eli Stone or
Women's Murder Club.

Last month, Anna told you which shows were on the bubble, the shows that were might not be coming back. Now TV Guide's Michael Ausiello has an updated list of which shows are in trouble. He gives a 1-10 rating for each show, 10 meaning the show is definitely coming back and 0 meaning the stars should start looking for work right now.

OK, OK, so we know that American Idol grabbed the top two slots again (get used to it). But I'm getting a little tired of putting a picture of AI on this post each and every week. Not because of any dislike for the show, but because it's the same old thing every week. So, above is a picture from the number 15 show, The New Adventures of Old Christine.
1. American Idol - Tues (FOX)
2. American Idol - Weds (FOX)

Sure, we can talk about how this year's Oscars were the worst-rated in TV history, but its still came in at #1 for the week, knocking American Idol from the top slot. It also got the #5 slot with their red carpet special and the #13 slot with the Barbara Walters special. Of course, the folks at FOX aren't that worried: it still took the next three slots, and hey, the Oscars won't be on next week.
1. The Oscars (ABC)

The big story this week isn't FOX - looks like American Idol and House will have the top spots for the foreseeable future - it's the fact that Lost is getting some great ratings since it returned. It was in the top ten last week too. Or maybe it's not that much of a surprise, since there aren't too many new scripted shows on the air right now, but ABC has to be happy that people are still tuning in on the new night.
And CBS has cause to rejoice too: even though Survivor got its lowest debut ratings in the show's history, it was still number eight for the week.

A note to TV show crews that are suffering during this writers strike: the shows feel your pain.
Nikki over at Deadline Hollywood Daily has learned that the crew of the CBS comedy The New Adventures of Old Christine got a nice surprise earlier this week: checks for $1000 (to go with the nice jackets they got for Christmas). The card attached to the checks said "To Our Old Christine friends: We miss you and hope we'll be together soon. Keep the faith. With love, from The Writers, The Actors, The Director." Awwwwwwww. A source close to the set says that the showrunner is being quite generous "even when her show has yet to become a big hit."
