Mmmmm...PBS coffee

PBS BlendPBS is getting into the coffee game by joining with Green Mountain Coffee Roasters and creating the PBS Blend. The coffee will be organic, and will be "offered in whole bean, 10 oz. packages, and single serve K-cups for use in Keurig Single-Cup brewers."

But the PBS ombudsman column above raises an interesting question: how can PBS get into the for-profit business of selling coffee and other commercial endeavors and still get taxpayer support? Whatever side you happen to fall on, the column probably answers any questions you might have and is well worth reading.

I wonder if they'll do it for certain shows. Maybe a Sesame Street Hazelnut or a Bill Moyers Vanilla Bean. Though I don't really want to know what a McLaughlin Group-flavored coffee would taste like.

PBS series on iTunes

PBSPBS has made some of its programming available on iTunes, but instead of paying for the episodes, you simply call a number and pledge money to PBS, download the episode, and then receive a coffee mug or tote bag in the mail. No, I'm kidding, the episodes are the usual $1.99 downloads. The series include Nova (which has had a free vodcast on iTunes already), Scientific American Frontiers, Antiques Roadshow and Now. PBS is also offering a few animated children's programs in its iTunes store, including Arthur, Cyberchase and Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman. The Nova podcast will be a little more pricey at $7.99 per show, and I notice the short-form Nova vodcast hasn't had a new episode since last month, so maybe they're ditching that as well. I hope that isn't the case, since it was a great vodcast, even if it did only offer tiny snippets.

PBS shows for sale on Google

pbs logoYou asked for it, you got it. PBS says it has responded to viewer requests to make its programming available online by going with Google. You can buy Antique Roadshow, Nova, Arthur, Fetch, Cyberchase, and NOW on Google video. Nova costs $7.99 to download but the other shows are the industry standard $1.99.

I'd definitely be interested in downloading episodes of Frontline and America's Test Kitchen.
