During the broadcast of the Minnesota vs. Ohio State college football game last weekend, ESPN analyst Bob Griese put his foot in his mouth. While promoting an upcoming NASCAR event, a graphic was shown listing the drivers.
When Griese's fellow broadcast Chris Spielman questioned why NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya wasn't on the list, Griese replied that he was "out having a taco."
Oops! ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz has announced that
Bob Griese has been suspended for a week. Griese has apologized for the ill-attempt at humor. Krulewitz revealed that ESPN had spoken to Griese and "he understands the comment was inappropriate."

I can't even blame the cable networks for this anymore. The History Channel is expanding its repertoire of reality programs as a direct response to the record ratings they've seen with the ones they have now. What do we expect them to do when we don't show up to watch until they throw
Ice Road Truckers and
Pawn Stars at us? Apparently, we don't want history on the History Channel.
They've heard us, which is why
The History Channel is bringing us more reality, starting with a spi-off of the aforementioned
Truckers.
Extreme Trucking will travel the world looking for the most treacherous roadways anywhere, and the brave men and women who drive them.
We can also look forward to traveling the US with
Pickers, as people hunt for rare artifacts. And we'll get down and dirty with a 61-year old feud at a North Carolina NASCAR track with
Madhouse. Even more unusual is
Sliced, a series where objects are cut in half so we can see what they look like. Hey, if they cut a tree in half we can look at the history of it!

I'm not talking about a newspaper, I'm talking about the mysterious bald guy on FOX's
Fringe.
Alert viewers have probably noticed the character on the show. You can often see him lurking in the background, as part of a crowd, or just walking by (as well as other, more obvious scenes). Now the character has made his way off of the show and is lurking about on other FOX shows, including
American Idol, NASCAR coverage, even during NFL games.

TLC will begin airing yet another new reality show. This one will capitalize on the fame of NASCAR by following the
lives of several wives of famous NASCAR drivers. Between this and the
animated Jeff Foxworthy show, NASCAR would certainly be a household name if it weren't already.
It's interesting how they're trying to combine the male-skewing genre of NASCAR with the female-skewing genre of the "wives" reality-TV subculture. It could be seen as an attempt to get a certain type of wife to understand her husband a little better. Perhaps now they could go to NASCAR shows together and each recognize their own brand of celebrity.
While I don't follow it, I can understand the appeal of NASCAR. Not everybody can play hoops or football at a professional level. However, to drive in NASCAR you only need to be able to drive fast and make lots of turns (mostly left). I've seen a myriad of drivers on New Jersey highways that could qualify.

I guess they think he's FOX-worthy. Now to go along with his hit game show
Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?,
FOX has greenlit an animated series about a NASCAR family by and featuring the voice talent of Jeff Foxworthy. In fact, the same article goes on to report that they're developing a daily syndicated version of
Fifth Grader also to be hosted by the redneck king. I could never really get into the show because too often the answer to the titular question is "No" and at this point it's just getting sad how stupid we're collectively getting.
As for the animated series, with the show set in the world of NASCAR, I worry that the premise is too narrow. But if anybody can turn a show about the redneck's sport of choice into a bona fide hit it would be the guy who helped turn the Blue Collar Comedy Tour into a national phenomenon. This guy gets the working class and they love him right back. I suspect he'll be gently poking fun at them much like his "You might be a redneck" jokes. If he goes too gentle, he can just call it
King of the Track and be done with it.

Here are the weekly cable ratings, by number of viewers. While I'm really, really happy that
Burn Notice grabbed the #6 slot this week, I'm a little bummed out that
Mad Men didn't make the top 10. In fact, it didn't even make it in anywhere
near the top 10, despite getting two million viewers for its season premiere. Still, that's better than the ratings for last season.
