Stealing scenes on the small screen is nothing new to Christian Slater. The actor, known for films like
Heathers,
True Romance and
Pump up the Volume, has made memorable guest appearances on shows like
Alias,
The West Wing and
My Name is Earl. His first shot at his own series, the NBC spy thriller
My Own Worst Enemy, struggled to find an audience, leading the network to cancel it halfway through the first season.
Slater is back starring in a new series,
The Forgotten, produced by
CSI head honcho Jerry Bruckheimer. The ABC procedural follows a team of amateur detectives who work murder cases involving unidentified victims, or John and Jane Does. Slater plays former cop Alex Donovan, whose search for his missing daughter inspires him in the field.
I got the chance to talk with Slater about
The Forgotten, his new career in TV, and what one of his most famous big screen characters would think about his latest role.

... five canceled shows.
Some shows, like critical darlings
The Shield and
Battlestar Galactica, are allowed to end gracefully; major story arcs are wrapped up and fans are left satisfied. Others are yanked from network schedules like unsightly weeds from a rose garden.
The networks yanked a number of shows off the air this season. Most of them, like
The Ex List, probably deserved the axe, but there were four that deserved more time to develop an audience and one that I'm really gonna miss. In no particular order, they are:

I read Brad's post about
NBC keeping Jay Leno in the fold and I think it's the latest move by NBC to ruin TV. Can Jeff Zucker be impeached? I'm so fed up with the way he's be running -- ruining -- the network that I'm ready to bust. Seriously, is there anybody over there that still has any connection to what viewers want to see?
Basically, NBC is ready to try something completely radical and -- in my estimation -- ridiculous, even though it would keep Leno from being lured to another network.

This has nothing to do with the quality of the show. I like it. But I'm wondering why I keep watching it week after week when
NBC has already canceled it.
It's not the first time that I've watched a TV show that has been canceled. And I think that fans should keep watching the remaining episodes of a TV show that has been canceled, out of loyalty if nothing else. But it takes
real loyalty to watch a canceled show that has a continuing mystery at its core, which
My Own Worst Enemy has.

Usually when a show is canceled, you don't hear about it from the stars. Once in a while you do (like Kelsey Grammer
when Back To You was canned), but it's usually the producers and/or critics who make the most fuss about a show being canceled.
My Own Worst Enemy star
Madchen Amick is speaking out about the cancellation of the NBC show (one of several she is currently on).
She says that the show actually was a hit, especially if you include DVR/Tivo/online viewers. She thinks that the show's high budget is what made NBC cancel it. If it didn't have a big budget and still got fair ratings, it could have survived a little longer. She's frustrated by the experience.

It's that time of year again -- time to shop 'til you drop, bake until you sweat, eat until you bloat, and take stock in what you are thankful for, in your life and of course, on television.
You might think that in this season of less-than-stellar television, it would be hard to find TV-related things to be thankful for; after all, with lackluster new shows and all of your favorites getting canceled left and right, things do seem bleak.
But my glass is half full, and I still garner joy from my nightly boob tube sessions, my TV on DVD collection, and the time I haven't spent watching TV. I am thankful ...

You would think that a TV network that just canceled two big shows and had to pretty much take over another big show wouldn't be too happy with the company's entertainment head. But that's not what's happening over at NBC.
The network just
canceled the Christian Slater spy drama My Own Worst Enemy, and
Lipstick Jungle looks like it might be done too. Both shows starred big names and the network were hoping they'd stick around for a while. Meanwhile,
Heroes has seen a huge drop in ratings, producers are being fired, and the show is being overhauled for its (hopeful) fourth season. But
Silverman isn't being blamed for these miscues. Exec Katharine Pope was in charge of those shows (and
Bionic Woman) so she is the one being blamed, according to
The New York Post.

Hello! My name is Isabelle and I
watch watched
Lipstick Jungle and
My Own Worst Enemy.
See the verb tense there? Yep, past. That's because NBC decided that in the near future,
LJ and
MOWE would not be part of my viewing schedule anymore.
All major entertainment websites report that NBC has decided to cancel both series. What they don't know, and that's because NBC ain't talking yet, is if the already-in-the-can episodes would see the light of a TV screen before the series retire.

A lot of people would say FOX's
Fringe. A lot of people would say CBS's
The Mentalist (it's also the #1 new show ratings-wise). Some might even say CBS's
Worst Week, though a lot of people wouldn't. It's actually been kind of a blah year for new shows.
The Boston Herald, a newspaper I used to write for many TV seasons ago, says one of the best new shows is actually on The CW, and
it's Privileged. Amy Amatangelo says that
Privileged is "that rare show...that gets better every week." She's even really specific when comparing it to other shows. If you like
Brothers & Sisters you'll like parts of the show, and if you're a fan of
How I Met Your Mother, you'll like other parts of it (the show is about a Yale grad who is hired by a cosmetics millionaire to tutor her kids). She compares it to
Gossip Girl too.
So this go me thinking: what do you think is the best new show of the year? I haven't seen
Privileged yet, so I'd probably have to go with either
The Mentalist or
Fringe. Poll is after the jump.

Wouldn't it be great if we didn't have to worry about TV ratings? That we could watch all of our favorite shows and not have to worry about them being watched by a lot of people, getting good ratings, and all that? And they'd be on for as long as we wanted?
Back to reality.
My Own Worst Enemy, the new Christian Slater spy show that I happen to like a lot,
got its lowest ratings yet last night. The number was down 22% from the previous week. I think that kinda translates into "not many people really care about this show." I don't think any show can succeed in NBC's Monday at 10 slot, at least not in the past three or four years, and
MOWE is no exception. It's up against CBS's
CSI: Miami and ABC's
Boston Legal, which gets a strong lead-in from
Dancing with the Stars and
Samantha Who? Continue reading Monday night: A tale of two ratings
