Leave it to Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert to tackle the tough issues, to tame the tiger, to take on all comers, to invite the biggest, loudest, richest mouth in radi... Oh? You mean, it's not
that Rush?
That's right.
The Colbert Report has booked Rush to appear Wednesday night (11:30 PM/EST). That's Rush the band, not Rush Limbaugh, the radio yapper. Limbaugh would no doubt have been the butt of countless jibes -- assuming he would even submit to the possibility of being kidded -- but he's not coming on the show.
Rush, the Canadian band, will not have to worry about Colbert's rapier wit. They're coming on the show to sing.
This is a real feather in the cap for
The Colbert Report. Rush has not appeared on American TV in over 30 years, and they're going to perform "Tom Sawyer," their most-famous song.
Stephen C. has been embracing the music this summer. In addition to Rush, Nas is going to perform on July 23, Toby Keith on July 28, and Crosby, Stills and Nash (no Young -- although he has appeared in the past on the show) on July 30.
Is this a trend away from comedy for
The Colbert Report or just injecting some variety into the format? I think it's the latter, and as long as I like the musical act, I'm okay with it.

BET is tagging this event as "the hottest ticket on television." And from this list of performers, I can see why. Usher, Lil Wayne, Nelly, Alicia Keys, Chris Brown, Kanye West, and Young Jeezy will take the stage at the
BET Awards '08. The award show will be hosted by
The Original Kings of Comedy member, D.L. Hughley.
The network is honoring some iconic names in music as well. Legendary R&B crooner Al Green will receive BET's Lifetime Achievement Award. Celebrated producer / arranger / composer Quincy Jones is set for BET's Humanitarian Award for his work in the Listen Up, a charity which connects youth with music, technology and culture.

This is pretty cool. Apparently, Bear McCreary, the composer for
Battlestar Galactica, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and many other films and television series,
performed a concert of some of his music at The Roxy. Two segments from the concert were placed on his blog. The concerts were televised on
G4. Wasn't that channel supposed to be about video games?
Bear McCreary himself has an interesting blog in which he discusses the business of making music for the video entertainment industry. The music has always been a major part of the dark undertones of
Battlestar Galactica; it serves the story very well and is a vital part of the telling.
There are two videos after the jump of the Roxy concert. They include pieces called "Roslin and Adama" and "Fight Night". Admittedly, I can't place the
Galactica episodes in which they were played. If anyone can, please let me know in the comments.

This fan post from
Oh No They Didn't! contains two super-sneaky clips of new songs from Flight of the Conchords' recent Milwaukee tour stop. The audio isn't top-notch, obviously, what with all the audience laughter, echo-y acoustics, and the overwhelming roar of girls everywhere doing that thing where they take off their bra under their shirt and then fling it on the stage. Chick magnets, Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement are. Anyway, we still have a long while to wait before their self-titled HBO show returns for a second season. Perhaps we can give a listen to this new material and start thinking about what January 2009 will bring.

SuperSync is an application for keeping your iTunes libraries synchronized between multiple computers. The software works with Macs and PCs, and now with TiVo as well.
SuperSync 2.3 adds support for synchronizing MP3 files with a TiVo.
TiVo users can use the software to access MP3s stored in their iTunes directories on computers connected to the home network. You can then use a TiVo remote to browse your music library by artist, genre, album, or playlist.
The latest version of SuperSync also has a new help system, improved transfer stats, and support for several other digital audio players. A SuperSync license for 2 machines runs $29, with discounted options available for 5 and 10 machine licenses.

MceFM is an awesome little plugin for Windows Vista Media Center that lets you stream music from
Last.fm. If you're not familiar with Last.fm, it's an online music recommendation service combined with a streaming radio service. All you have to do is type in the name of an artist or song and Last.fm will dig up music by that artist and then find similar songs you might like and start playing one song after another.
In order to use MceFM, you'll need to have a Last.fm account, but accounts are free, so that's easy. The plugin isn't much to look at. You can enter an artist name and MceFM will connect to Last.fm, find your music and set up a playlist.
One of the coolest features of this plugin is that you can find music similar to songs and artists already on your computer. Just locate a track in your music library and then click the More button on your remote (or hit the Ctrl+D keys on your keyboard to bring up the context menu and select More), and you can search Last.fm for similar music.

The television show
Lost now has some musical groupies.
A band calling itself "Previously on Lost" is doing musical recaps of episodes, just in case you missed watching it and want the recap to a beat.
Their first song "We're Goin Home" is a pleasant, catchy tune sung in a grating group voice that makes me want to destroy my External Auditory Canals rather than hear another note. If the band is going to continue in this style, they may win the musical equivalent of the Razzies.

In 2004, the
Venture Bros. gang pumped up our holiday spirit with a cover of Bing Crosby and David Bowie's "Little Drummer Boy" duet; in 2005, Dolly Parton's "Hard Candy Christmas"; and in 2006, a little thing called "Do They Know It's Christmas?" (part of Venture-Aid 2006). This year, the Christmas love continues with yet another Dr. Girlfriend and Monarch duet, in the form of The Pogues' "
Fairytale of New York".
I quite like this song, but I don't think anything will be able to top the Monarch/Henchmen love that was "Hard Candy Christmas". And what's up with the Monarch doing every single song? Jackson Publick must have a little too much fun with that voice.

It's been a long time since you could just turn on MTV and catch a music video. Fortunately it's pretty easy to find pretty much any music video ever made on the internet. But it's still kind of nice to be able to watch on a TV set, which is why I'm mildly excited to see that TiVo has partnered with
Music Choice to launch a
music video on demand service.
The service is free to use, and is as easy to navigate as any other TiVo service. You can just your remote control to browse by genre or search for specific artists or videos.
TiVo first
announced its partnership with Music Choice back in January, so this week's service launch has been a long time coming.

When I got the
Flight of the Conchords DVD, I was slightly disappointed to see that there aren't any fun special features. I spent about ten minutes watching Bret and Jemaine dance through the title menu before I finally accepted that the two-disc set consisted only of the 12-episode season. Again, my disappointment was only slight, because the overall awesomeness of the series is enough to keep anyone happy. Little did I know there would be a sneaky surprise waiting for me in plain sight. This is an appropriate time to use "tee hee".
After watching about three marathon-runs of the DVD, I poked around the menus a bit more and saw that there was a language setting for Spanish. I usually like trying out foreign language dubbings on my DVDs at least once so that I can hear how much the voice actors sound like the on-screen people. Yes, I'm one of
those types. Easily amused. Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that the guy playing Jemaine had a very similar deep voice, although Bret's guy was a little off-mark. Then the musical numbers rolled around and I almost fell out of my chair. They actually went through and re-recorded all the songs in Spanish?

I know I have a problem. I don't need anyone to tell me that I was a child of television and it's been in my life all my life. Yes, I read. Yes, I listen to music. And, obviously I write.
But most of my writing these days is about television!
I recall the last writers strike. It was during that time that I wrote a really horrible horror novel to occupy my time outside of my day job. I'm not doing that again this time. I refuse to spend weeks writing dreck just because the television and film writers are on strike.

Nearly a year after TiVo
first announced its partnership with RealNetworks' Rhapsody music service, the two companies are rolling out a service that will let you
listen to music on your TiVo.
In a nutshell, if you happen to have (or want to sign up for) a Rhapsody subscription, you can access artists, albums, playlists, and channels on your Series2 or Series3 TiVo. Just fire up your TiVo and navigate the on-screen menus. No PC necessary.
The service will set you back $13/month on top of your TiVo subscription. You can also sign up for a 30 day free trial.
I'm still on the fence about music subscription models. On the one hand, you're paying for access to a huge library of music that you can listen to on your computer, TiVo, or some portable devices. On the other hand, once you cancel your subscription it all goes away, no matter how many CDs worth of money you spent on the service during the months that you were a regular customer.

Sheesh, I guess I haven't checked out Muppet News Flash in awhile, and wound up missing out on some cool Muppet news.
First, a Fraggle Rock album will hit stores in October. There's pretty much zero information on Fraggle Rockin', except that it will contain music from the series. Amazon doesn't even have an album image. Did I mention it's a three-disc set? That's all kinds of awesome.

While it has persevered for almost four decades, Sesame Street's heart and soul is very much a product of the 1970s. There was nothing like it when it first hit the public television airwaves in 1969; while other children's programs took place in mystical and magical lands, Sesame Street took place in a regular inner city neighborhood. Okay, it was an inner city neighborhood where monsters and people lived together, but it's that partial realism which set it apart from other programs, and, perhaps subconsiously, gave kids a sense of community and belonging.
