Reasons why I think ABC should renew Miss Guided

Judy Greer
TV Squadder Paul Goebel reviewed the series premiere of the ABC comedy Miss Guided. He wasn't sure what to make of the show after the first airing and I must admit that I also had my doubts about this new comedy. Judy Greer is a joy to watch as guidance counselor Becky Freeley but the comedy was predictable and the cast way too beautiful to portray a real high school. However, I decided to stick with it and ended up enjoying the show's storylines and characters as well as the interview-like tidbits.

The series aired its season finale last week and is now awaiting ABC's upfronts to know if it'll come back next season or have to close the books. To help ABC make its decision, here are some reasons why Miss Guided should be renewed.

Miss Guided: Homecoming (series permiere)

Judy Greer(S01E01) I'm not quite sure what to make of this show. It's hard to decide what I like and don't like considering that the show is really not that unique. For example, I've always been a fan of Chris Parnell but his work on Miss Guided pales in comparison to the stuff he does on 30 Rock. The same goes for Brooke Burns but if I had to choose, I'd rather see her in those jeans she wore on Dog Eat Dog.

Judy Greer is super funny. Her guest spot on Two and a half Men was brilliant in my opinion. So when she got her own show, I was interested to say the least.

TV Squad previews ABC's new shows

ABC logoIf we've learned anything about ABC over the last couple of seasons, it's that they like to introduce a buttload of pilots at their upfronts every year. But the problem with that is, that leaves critics like us with a ton of DVDs to go through, and not all at once.

We got the first batch of ABC pilots pretty quickly, but we decided to hold off on this post until we got them all in. And since there are so many, we recruited a gaggle of Squadders to tackle them all. So after the jump, Jonathan, Brett, JJ, Jen, Kevin and I weigh in on every ABC pilot except for Private Practice (Grey's fans already saw that pilot in May, remember). Remember that these are early cuts of each pilot; we'll reevaluate when the final cuts of these shows come in later this summer.

What I'm watching this summer: Joel's list

It's Always Sunny in PhiladelphiaI think I'm the last Squadder to put out one of these lists, and there's a good reason for that. After the crush of the season finales and upfronts in May, I was happy to not be a regular watcher of anything in particular, except for Yankee games, so there seemed to be nothing for me to write about.

But when I really thought about it, that's not even close to being true. Despite the fact that it's summer, there's more than enough quality programming that I'm sure I'll get sucked into some weekly habits at some point. So, after the jump, here's what I plan on watching:

Rob Thomas to run ABC's Miss/Guided

Rob Thomas and Kristen BellLooks like Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas already has a new job. He told E!'s Kristin Veitch that he has been brought on as executive producer and show-runner for the ABC midseason comedy Miss/Guided.

Miss/Guided is a single-camera sitcom staring Judy Greer (Love Monkey). She plays a former high school nerd that comes back to her alma mater as a guidance counselor and finds that high school is still high school, even for the adults. It was created by Caroline Williams, a writer on The Office; I'm guessing Thomas is being brought on to guide this show with an experienced hand, since Williams has never run a show before.

Watch clips of ABC's pilots on their website

CavemenOn the heels of yesterday's upfront presentation, ABC has put up short clips of its new fall pilots on their website. All of the shows introduced, including the mid-season replacements, have clips on the site (the soap Dirty Sexy Money has two clips), including a brief scene from the much-anticipated and already-maligned Cavemen.

I've got to tell you, that feeling of "blah" I got from the pilot descriptions yesterday didn't go away when I saw the clips. None of them look nearly as compelling as what ABC or the other networks had to offer last year; the clip for Cavemen in particular looked pretty bad. The only one that got me interested in seeing the pilot was the clip for Miss/Guided, which won't even premiere until mid-season.

Oh, well. Like most critics, I'll be getting the rough-cut versions of the pilots soon, so we'll see if my "blah" feeling goes away at that point.
