Showbiz has gone green, and that's not just ecologically! Green is flashing all over Hollywood.
CBS has given the greenlight to three more pilots, including a doctor drama, a psychic romance, and a British-based tale of international love.
NY-LON (no, not nylon the fabric!), refers to the New York-London connection via air. The story, which writers Patti Carr and Lara Runnels (who both worked on
'Til Death) are translating from the U.K. version, is about a British businessman who meets a New York City record store clerk while she's in London, and then their subsequent attempts to maintain a transatlantic romance. The series ran seven episodes in England, which is not atypical. Of course, for American TV, many more episodes than that will be necessary to constitute a hit.

Patrick Dempsey will be the celebrity driver for the pace car during today's Indianapolis 500 race. And he's being very gracious about the opportunity. It really is a dream come true for him.
Fans of Dempsey probably already know that he's a racing fanatic and co-owns an Indy racing team. In
this interview for Auto Racing Daily, he's dropping names left and right of legendary Indy drivers and seems to be genuinely in awe of the entire event. Dempsey's sure to make it clear that he was a race fan and one of the racing guys long before he ever was 'McDreamy' on
Grey's Anatomy. Hopefully there will be a camera inside the pace car so we can see him having a ball.
The Indianapolis 500 race starts at 1 pm on ABC.

A love triangle, a hidden pregnancy, Josh Charles, and a quickened plot is what awaits viewers who tune in to
Six Degrees when it returns tonight on ABC at 9 pm. The series was pulled from the scheduled way back
in November when it wasn't holding on to the
Grey's Anatomy audience on Thursday nights. Created by J.J. Abrams, the drama is about six New Yorkers and how their lives intersect. The ensemble cast includes Bridget Moynahan, Campbell Scott, and Erika Christenson.
Only, in my opinion, it was slow. And boring. And apparently ABC thought so too, because it gave the executive producers a few mandates for the next seven episodes.

I don't watch Grey's Anatomy. I refuse to a.) get involved in a yet another continuing medical drama, and b.) I refuse to watch a show where there are characters named McDreamy and McSteamy. So I had no idea that the title of the show, while having a double meaning (including the medical/anatomy one, with a different spelling) was also referring to the lead character from the show, played by Ellen Pompeo, named Meredith Grey.
I learned this from reading Verne Gay's column about the show here in Newsday. How did I not know this earlier?
What about other shows I don't watch? Is "Miami" the name of David Caruso's character on CSI: Miami? Is Judge Judy's real first name "Judge?" Is "Philadelphia" the name of one of the characters on It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia? Or is it "Sunny?"

And let me predict what you're going to say in the comments section:
"Studio 60 isn't funny!"
"Studio 60 should be canceled!"
"Studio 60 sucks!"
Only that last one will probably be spelled SUX, in hip web/AOL lingo.
The Emmys are thinking about making a "dramedy" category, for shows that fall in between comedies and dramas. Shows like the above two I mentioned plus Grey's Anatomy, Boston Legal, and Ugly Betty.

Leave it to somebody not even remotely associated with a controversy to have a solution for it.
You've probably heard (here and elsewhere) about Isaiah Washington's use of a certain word to describe co-star T.R. Knight during a fight on the Grey's Anatomy set between Washington and Patrick Dempsey. And you've heard about Washington's denial that he used the word, his co-star's outrage that he denied using it, ABC's outrage at Washington in general, GLAAD's outrage over the entire incident, and now news that Washington has agreeed to meet with gay leaders and seek help (whew...hope you followed all that). Now musician John Mayer has come up with a way to solve the entire crisis without kicking Washington off of the show.
Make his character gay! As he says, "What better way for an actor to get to the roots of his discrimination than by portraying the very the subject of his own ire for the remainder of his contract? That'll learn ya!"

NBC brings us the Golden Globes tonight, and this is the last in our
series of preview posts looking at the television categories. Sandy will be blogging live updates of the show here on TV Squad, so if Jack and 24 already have your attention, keep a browser open to play along. That said, let's look at the award for Best Television Series - Drama.
Inertia is a powerful thing. And it is one of the big problems with Emmy nominations. Too often the same show will get nominated year after year because that's just what they do, while newer, more deserving shows, are overlooked. The Golden Globes doesn't fall into that particular trap quite as often, but they have their own issues. The Globes have a tendency to favor shows with a lot of buzz, or big ratings, whether their quality is up to snuff or not. I think it's something we see again in the list of nominees this year.

Have you noticed that the name of Eric Dane's character on Grey's Anatomy, a doctor, has the same name as another famous TV doctor?
Dane's character is named Dr. Mark Sloan, which was also the name of Dick Van Dyke's character on Diagnosis: Murder. Is the name a tribute to Van Dyke's character? No, it's not, according to an ABC publicist. Just one of those funny coincidences.
Which is probably a good thing, since fans won't want to think of Dick Van Dyke wearing only a towel around his waist. Of course, now that I've put that image in your head, how can you not think of it the next time you see him?

So I'm watching Rachael Ray this morning (I woke up a little late and groggy so I wanted something to snap me into wide awake mode), and she has Chandra Wilson on, from the ABC hit Grey's Anatomy. She's sitting with Rachael at that table, drinking, being all casual and taking questions from the people in the audience. And the questions were...interesting, to say the least.

The National Enquirer is reporting that Grey's Anatomy costars Patrick Dempsey and Isaiah Washington got into a fight on the set of the hit ABC drama on Monday. While Patrick, Washington, and costar T.R. Knight were waiting to do a scene, Washington said something nasty to Knight, and Patrick stood up for him. That's when Washington got into a shoving match with Dempsey, and one source says that Washington even tried to choke him, then stormed off the set. He later came back to finish the scene.
Supposedly, Washington is upset over the whole "McDreamy" nonsense that shows like The Insider and Entertainment Tonight and gossip mags are pushing. To which I say, "amen." Though it's not enough to McChoke somebody. I mean, that's just McStupid.

Update: Dempsey and Washington confirm the fight, though they say no punches were thrown.

I don't even watch
Grey's Anatomy but there I was, on the couch on Friday afternoon, watching
Oprah. Her guest was Ellen Pompeo, who plays the lead character 'Meredith Grey' on the mega-hit ABC show. (Wow! She's toothpick thin, isn't she?) Oprah was asking her all sorts of questions about whether Meredith will choose McDreamy or The Vet and Pompeo seemed like she honestly didn't know the answer. She said she was excited to get back to work after the summer break to find out who Meredith chooses. What impressed me so much was how Pompeo seemed like she was totally into her own show. How cool is that?!?

Now that
Grey's Anatomy is over and has officially been picked up for a third season by ABC, it's time for me to make a decision about whether or not I want to finally bite the bullet and catch myself up with this show.
I've been hearing from several people -- TV Squaders included -- how great this show is, that I just have to watch it, that I'm missing out. So, why have I been putting this off for so long? Why haven't I just sat down and watched the show? Even just one episode? I'll tell you why.

Last night on
Grey's Anatomy, karma was
biting everyone back. And I know most of you feel so badly for George, because Meredith used him, because he's the
victim. And you're feeling bad for Izzie. She's the one who walked in on Alex with Olivia, so she deserves the
sympathy, right? And Addison. Everyone loves to hate Addison, who cheated on her husband, who's been approached by Sexy
McSteamy, her old love interest, and you know what we're all thinking:
is she going to sleep with him
again?
You've got all this righteous anger, against Meredith over her treatment of George, Alex over his romp
in the hospital bed with the hottie nurse, and Addison for just being there. And if you're anything like me: your anger
pulled a switcheroo on you, diffusing, spreading out over the whole cast until it wasn't anger any more, really, but
sympathy and sorrow and this little, sad hope.
But before we continue on with the major themes of the show I
have to send out a hearty, loud, mama-rific cheer to the writers for their portrayal of Bailey. Oh how I love you,
writers. You made her leak. As I'm deep in the throes of my second experience with breastfeeding, I've had
those twin milky spots on my nice work shirt oh, so many times. And the way she plays it is priceless, in an especially
emotional conversation with Addison: "Please don't cry! You're going to make me... (holds breasts in a motion to
which I totally relate) lactate!" I would have jumped off the couch and done a little dance of
joy over this realistic and funny portrayal... but I was breastfeeding my 10-month-old.

Yesterday..ooh, doesn't seem
so far away with tonight's
Grey's Anatomy. Hard on the
heels of an emotional, long-held-secret-revealing
Desperate Housewives, I
thought I would burst from the sheer amount of raw emotion thrown at us. It's all laid out, there on the table tonight,
and, wow, we're really opening up old wounds (and I'm laying on the double entendre a little thick, hmm?).
I feel
like a total heel for saying so, but McSteamy - a.k.a. Mark, Dr. Shepherd's best friend and wife's lover - he's totally
hotter than Derek. I am so not surprised that Addison fell for him! And his introduction, just one of a series
of witty yet emotionally charged scenes, shows that the Grey's writers aren't taking a pass after last week's awesome episode. Was this one
better? Nah. But it wasn't at all a disappointment, with a little surprise around every corner and a shocker
at the end. Let's just say, all you George fans out there? You got a little bit of yours today.

"Penises and fingers are like apples and oranges," says Dr. Bailey. And again, we are in the midst of an
episode where the patients are as much fun as the hot, quirky doctors.
Truth is not stranger than fiction today,
but it sure is harder to tell it. Everybody's lying, whether it's Meredith insisting that no, she did not bring
her dog to work or Cristina not explaining to Dr. Burke how she hasn't, exactly, moved in with him (she's kept
her old apartment). Whether it's the operatic "elderly" patient, Sophie, who's charmed everyone into
believing that her daughter is making her a pink room in her house (so she shouldn't be discharged), or Meredith, who's
desperately trying to convince everyone (including herself) that she's not still in love with McDreamy. Everybody lies,
sometimes.
