Damned season finales everywhere you look. On the one hand, it's good, because a season finale usually means that you are going to get the good. On the other hand, it also means that we are now going to have to tuck our favorite characters away for the summer and occupy our time with something else, like books, or old beat up trucks. The goods were definitely in play for the Supernatural finale. For the last year we've all been wondering what would happen when time ran out on Dean's deal, and we finally found out.

Gallery: Supernatural
<a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/supernatural/531500/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/supernatural/531499/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/supernatural/531498/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/supernatural/531497/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/supernatural/531496/">

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Nielsen ratings for the week ending May 11

Filed under: Industry, Programming, Ratings, Reality-Free

Here are the weekly TV ratings, by number of viewers.

Last week I mentioned that Lost wasn't in the top 20. Well, this week it returns. Not to the highs it was earlier this year, but hey, I wouldn't mind almost 11 million people watching what I do each week (I'm talking about writing, not going to the bathroom or eating a sandwich). Survivor's finale and regular episode both made the top 20, even though it was the lowest-rated finale in the history of the show.

No, Heidi wasn't there. No, Spencer wasn't there. Yes, that's totally their style. And yes, I was kind of bummed out.

Speaking of bummed out, it was freezing in Beverly Hills last night. MTV rented the outside of this swanky mansion but here's the catch, nothing was going on inside. So, the press had to freeze for three hours while we waited to talk to the stars of The Hills. Also, the port-o-potties MTV set up for us were super classy. Come on! There had to be at least fifteen bathrooms in that house.

For what happened at the live red carpet event before the big season finale, read on past the jump. I got to talk to Chiara Kramer, "Lo" Bosworth, and Stephanie Pratt.

Gallery: The Hills
<a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/the-hills-1/802320/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/the-hills-1/802319/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/the-hills-1/802318/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/the-hills-1/802317/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/the-hills-1/802299/">

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Medium: Drowned World (season finale) - VIDEO

Filed under: Medium, Video, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S04E16) It's always nice when we get to see Joe's dreams for a change. Luckily for him, they aren't visions of the future.

I am constantly amazed at the strength of character shown by Joe Dubois. Generally characters on TV are very sensitive or have high moral standards. It's not often that they have both. The best part is that while Joe knows that he is doing the right thing and really has no other choice, you can see the frustration and the anxiety in his face. I wonder if Jake Weber could possibly get an Emmy nominee for this role.

The episode wrapped up the Chloe/Todd relationship, clarified where Sam and Todd stand, and gave Sam another clean slate (she got the first one after when she woke up from the coma with amnesia). Maybe more. I cried when Nora told Kevin he deserved to have a beautiful wedding just as much as anybody else. And I also cried at two more points, but I'll talk about them below the jump. This was a beautiful episode of television. Even though I don't know that I have written about the music used in episodes, I thought the use of "Can't Find My Way Home" for the last two scenes was profoundly moving. Last year, I thought the season finale was a disaster because it ended with grand hijinks and everybody jumping into a pool. This year's season ended quietly on a beautiful sunny hillside, and it just about broke my heart. I am going to go out on a limb here and hope that this show wins an Emmy, because when they do it well, they really nail it.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Survivor Micronesia: Stir the Pot (season finale)

Filed under: OpEd, Survivor, Episode Reviews

(S16E14) "May the best woman win." - Amanda

Well, this surely was a season of blindsides on Survivor Micronesia, wasn't it? Down to the finale, it just went on and on. After the excitement we had all season due to the strategical game play, I felt tonight's finale was a bit lackluster and full of filler. No, I'm not fussing just because my favorite didn't win. Heck, if that were the case, I would have been gone when Yau-Man hit the dust! Kelso is still in charge of the hospital, Keith is still around, and J.D. and Elliot are talking about their almost-kiss from the 6th season finale, something we thought they had gotten past awhile ago.

It was pretty obvious that, once NBC told Bill Lawrence that he couldn't make any more new episodes after the strike was over, there was a mutual decision to make "My Princess" the season (and, as it turns out, the NBC) finale. Problem was, since it was episode 709 (look it up at the NBCU Media Village site), some continuity problems would rear their heads.

Oh, well. Continuity was just a small problem with this episode. I will say this: any episode Zach Braff directs is going to be ambitious, and this was about as ambitious as Scrubs has gotten. But for some reason, I was expecting more from this Princess Bride homage than I got. It was funny in spots, but it could have been a whole lot funnier.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

30 Rock: Cooter (season finale) - VIDEO

Filed under: OpEd, Video, 30 Rock, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S02E15) "I'm just gonna be a kick-ass single mom.
30 Rock fans looking for laughs, plot twists, and a cliffhanger in the finale are probably happy. You got all that, plus a guest star (more than one, actually) that I didn't even know was going to be in the episode. And if you're one of the people who was wondering "what the heck does the episode title 'Cooter' even mean?," well, he's the secret to that (and Tina Fey has been using the term for a while now).

We've only just started to embrace the return of our shows after a shortened strike season. Now, they are almost over. In the next few weeks all of our network favorites will say good-bye for the summer to be replaced with reality shows, reality game shows, reality soap operas, and Regis on primetime (again).

Needless to say, I'm a bit depressed. As I am sure you are as well. But, we will do our duty and press on. Thusly, we here at the sprawling lakefront offices of TV Squad (you choose the lakefront) have compiled list of when your favorite, and not so favorite, shows will be saying good-bye for their summer vacation. As usual, taking the fickleness of the networks, these times and days can change at a moment's notices. We will try to update you of those changes as quickly as our little fingers can type it out.

So, with a leaden heart, here are your season and series finales.

The first episode airs tonight at 9 on CBS.

The Two and a Half Men episode was written by the CSI staff and is titled "Fish in a Drawer," and I have no idea what that title means. Thursdays CSI episode was written by the Two and a Half Men staff and has a title that's a lot easier to understand: "Two and a Half Deaths." It's about the murder of a despised sitcom star (Chuck Lorre used to work for both Cybill Shepherd and Roseanne Barr - I'm just sayin').

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Family Guy: Long John Peter (season finale) - VIDEO

Filed under: Video, Family Guy, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free
(S06E12) As a result of adopting (and by adopting, I mean bird-napping) a parrot from the veterinarian's office, Peter becomes a pirate. The sad part was that it wasn't even International Talk-Like-A-Pirate Day.

Actually, that's not really what the episode is about. It's more about Chris' pursuit of a vet intern named Anna. While Chris' pursues Anna, he gets advice from Peter and the gang (which, as the history of the show has proven, is never a good idea).

The pirate segment of the episode wasn't very good and seemed out of place. Fortunately, it was very short. Despite its use in the promos, it was kind of forgettable. I did enjoy the car chase bit involving "sugar cane, tobacco and spices". The car chase itself seemed like something of a cross between a pirate movie and a video-game.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

It's official: Lindsay Lohan to guest on Ugly Betty finale

Filed under: Celebrities, Ugly Betty, Casting, Reality-Free

First How I Met Your Mother went for ratings gold by casting Britney Spears in an episode (and another). Ugly Betty is following suit - with none other than Hollywood's poster child for poor choices and bad ideas: Lindsay Lohan.

Rich actually reported on this way back in November, but nothing came together. Blame the WGA Strike or the frequent trips to rehab ... take your pick. Variety has now confirmed that Li Lo will guest star in the upcoming Ugly Betty finale. But it doesn't stop there. The original plan for her arc to span three episodes has been upped to six. So she's going to return next season for five more. Lohan will play an old schoolmate of Betty's. The catch? Apparently she used to be a real bitch to the now successful Miss Suarez. Lohan's character is down on her luck, and Betty being the nice gal that she is, can't help but lend a hand.

This strikes me as a bit odd. I only casually follow this show, but it seems like ever since the show's regime change, things have been a bit shaky. The casting of someone like Lindsay Lohan just doesn't seem right to me. Thoughts?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Is Nicollette Sheridan leaving Desperate Housewives?

Filed under: Desperate Housewives, Celebrities, Reality-Free
One of the ongoing rumors about Desperate Housewives is that one of the ladies will be leaving the show at the end of the season. It's a rumor we actually heard almost every year. However, it's been growing lately, especially in light of the big twist set to happen at the end of the two-hour season finale and of recent cast interviews in which we learned that no one is safe.

Of course, it's pretty much a given that the four main characters (Bree, Susan, Gaby, Lynette) will be returning next season. Word on the street is that Katherine will also be coming back since fans have been responding positively to her addition. With that info in hand, fingers were pointed at one housewife: Edie, played by Nicollette Sheridan.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Britney definitely back on How I Met Your Mother

Filed under: How I Met Your Mother, Celebrities, Casting, Reality-Free
We knew it was coming. Since her first appearance on How I Met Your Mother broke ratings records for the series, it was inevitable that Britney Spears would return as crazy receptionist Abby. Last week we reported that Spears would be reprising her role on HIMYM. Today, CBS confirms the news and dishes about the episode that will mark the singer's return.

What's interesting about Britney's upcoming storyline in HIMYM is that she'll be paired with Neil Patrick Harris. If you recall the actor was recently misquoted saying that the show didn't need guest stars like Britney Spears.

Spoilers ahead!

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Gale Harold to join Desperate Housewives

Filed under: Desperate Housewives, Celebrities, Casting, Reality-Free
Gale Harold, who recently guest starred on two episodes of Grey's Anatomy and led the cast of the short-lived Vanished, has landed a recurring role on ABC's Desperate Housewives, reports TV Guide. Even the least-plugged-in fans of the show know by now that the show is crossing networks, and according to Hibberd, eighth season episodes are currently being produced under very hush-hush conditions (which is true; even the show's PR rep won't tell us exactly what's going on).

So... why all the secrecy, even though everyone seems to know what's what? It seems like there's a little cross-network courtesy going on. While ABC is waiting for its upfront presentation to officially announce that it's picked up the show, they're also waiting for the end of the show's run on NBC, which is either May 8 or 15, depending on your source (my guess is the 18th, considering only nine of the twelve produced episodes have aired). According to Hibberd, ABC is playing nice after ticking off NBC when the initial news about the show's move came out.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Naomi Campbell to appear on Ugly Betty finale

Filed under: Celebrities, Ugly Betty, Casting, Reality-Free

The parade of fabulous Ugly Betty guest stars continues. Supermodel Naomi Campbell is set to guest star on the comedy's season two finale. Campbell was supposed to appear in an earlier episode, but the guest spot never happened. Perhaps she got wind of that "Naomi Campbell tuna meltdown" joke.

Many real-life fashionistas have appeared on the style-conscious show. Victoria Beckham, designer Vera Wang, and Project Runway's Tim Gunn have all had guest-starring roles. Next week's episode, "Burning Questions," will feature an appearance by Project Runway winner Christian Siriano. I've told you before how much I hate cross-overs on TV; it's tolerable if it's at least the same genre of show. This is like in-breeding. If CSI and Two And a Half Men were brother and sister, then their deformed, incestual love-child is what's going to air on Monday, May 5th.

We actually reported on this almost a year ago, that the writers of CSI and Two And a Half Men were going to flip-flop and pen an episode of the other show. Well it never happened. Now, according to this press release, it's a go.
