(S02E07) Pikitis! I loved this episode. After hitting
a real low for me two weeks ago,
last week's episode was an improvement, but this week's really lived up to its potential. Even Andy, who I haven't been completely thrilled with as a character this season, was hilarious ("I'm not crying; I'm just allergic to jerks!"). It's also really nice to see people on Leslie's side. How awesome was Dave with her? I wasn't so sure about him when he first showed up, but he's becoming more and more fun every episode he's in.
So we find out that Leslie's mortal enemy is a high school kid who just happens to have a name that's a lot of fun to yell in anger. Which,
of course Leslie's mortal enemy is some 16-year-old punk. I will say this though: he's good: Between hiring the fake mom off of Craigslist and his janitor disguise that he used to break into the Parks office, maybe Leslie wasn't being completely ridiculous when she classified him as a James Bond-type criminal mastermind.

(S02E04) Last week, I talked about how
I was beginning to identify with Leslie Knope. This week, I have to say that I identify with her a lot less, but that's mainly because my dating life hasn't been anywhere near as awesome as hers. I have never downed Ambien instead of Tic-Tacs, I have never had a dude show up for a date with another woman, and sadly, my sleeve (or any other clothing item) has never caught on fire. All this says to me is that I haven't lived, man.
I also really like what they're doing with the Dave character. I was afraid that they were making him kind of stupid, but that wasn't evident in this episode. He was just kind of bumbling and charming again. Plus, it was super-sweet how he wasn't scared away when she showed up to his house drunk. Because really, if you can't show up at some dude's house and ask him if he's impressed that you remember it's a bathroom and not a whiz palace, then what's the point of life?

(S02E03) This is how I know
Parks and Recreation is growing as a show: Leslie Knope has not only stopped being a one-dimensional season one Michael Scott impression, but she has grown into a character with whom I can identify. If I ever found myself judging a beauty contest with a chick in a hooker dress talking about how if it were up to her and her family, it would be called "Ourmerica," and not "Theirmerica," I would have a difficult time holding my brains inside of my head.
I don't think I would have an elaborate, laminated scorecard with a section for the "
Naomi Wolf effect," but I could definitely see myself in a room arguing with my fellow judges about the brains of the other contestants. And Like Leslie Knope, I probably would have lost. Such is life.

Louis C.K. just shot a new comedy pilot for FX. He plays a stand-up comic dealing with divorce and fatherhood. It's hard to imagine where they come up with this stuff when you consider that C.K. is a stand-up comic and a divorced father.
And, just to push the boundaries of creativity one level higher, FX is calling it
Louis. (Strangely enough, rumor has it there's another pilot already called
C.K. about an animated chicken working as a trauma nurse at a downtown hospital in a post apocalyptic future.)
One of the top stand-up comics working today and a former writer for Conan O'Brien and Dana Carvey, C.K. has yet to see his own TV projects take off. His 2006 HBO show
Lucky Louie never got on the pop culture radar.

Do a search for my name on this blog and it becomes clear I have a nerdish obsession with animation. One of the things I love so much about it is that there are no boundaries whatsoever: a character can swallow a fork, get shot in the face, and decapitated by helicopter blades and still bounce back as if nothing happened. The only person in real life who could do that is Jesus Christ, and even He needed to rest for a few days afterward.

Comedian and actor Louis C.K. recently spoke with the AV Club about his career, including his latest stand-up special for HBO, and his short-lived HBO sitcom, Lucky Louie, an uncensored and often uncomfortably candid series shot like a basic sitcom, but without the restrictions of network TV.
I liked Lucky Louie. I didn't think it was perfect, but those moments I didn't like (stiff dialogue, some moments felt a little too forced) are common for all new shows as they work out the kinks and improve in subsequent seasons.

Messageboards can sometimes be a lot of fun to read, not because they're funny, but because reading them is like watching a retarded panda fighting --and subsequently making love to-- a refrigerator box. There's really no point to it, and you're embarrassed for watching, but you just can't tear yourself away from the spectacle.
This thread over on A Special Thing (a site and podcast I mentioned before) is an exception, because three actual comedians chat about their dinner plans. Well, mostly it's Todd Barry and Louis C.K., but Andy Kindler chimes in at one point, too. The contrast between professional comedians who actual are funny and forum users who aren't especially funny is kind of beautiful in its own way.
The thread contains some strong language.

Louis CK is one of my favorite comedians of all time. When I say "of all time" I don't just mean the time during which I've been alive, I mean since the universe came into existence. He's even funnier than that fish who crawled out of the sea on a pair of legs and said, "I just came out of the water, and boy are my newly-formed lungs tired!" He's also much funnier than that stupid joke I just made.
One of the things I love about Louis CK is that having kids hasn't changed his comedy in the slightest. Yes, he talks about his kids now, but he's still as raunchy and hysterical as he ever was. It's refreshing to watch a comedian who doesn't fall into the usual comedy cliches about being a father.

A few things have happened while
The Daily Show was on break ("We executed the Godfather of Soul, Gerald Ford?"), so, of course, the program started off with the hottest news: Manhattan's strange-smelling
gas leak. Oh, Jon, how we've missed you.
"
Autocratic Asphyxiation": Some members of the media promised to handle Saddam Hussein's execution in a tasteful way, but all that went out the window when CNN used a shiny, spinny "Hanging Hussein" graphic in the corner of their screen. Senior Hangmanalyst John Oliver reported on his visit to Hussein's execution. There was only light laughter for Oliver's "Hey! Is that your moustache or did your upper lip just throw up?" jeer, but I quite liked it.

The very short-lived series
Lucky Louie is coming to DVD in 2007, though there is no official announcement on the exact date. Creator and star Louie CK, who recently recorded audio commentary for the episodes, told fans the DVD would be released on January 30, but
TVShowsOnDVD warns that celebrities aren't always accurate when it comes to such things. I don't care when it comes out, I'm just happy it is coming out. I was rather bummed when I found out one of my favorite comedians had a show on HBO, a network I don't have on my current cable package. I've heard both good and bad things about the show, but like anyone else, I'd like to see it for myself and decide. We'll see if I enjoy it as much as his stand up, or if I'll be driving to his home to bang on his door and demand a refund.

It looks like HBO's traditional sitcom experiment was short-lived.
Lucky Louie, a multi-camera sitcom created and starring comedian Louis C.K., has been cancelled after its first 13-episode season.
This TV Week article ("cleverly" titled "'Louie's' Luck Runs Out") mentions that the show was seen by about 1.3 million viewers on average; the season finale was seen by about that many people, which was 1.2 million less than the network's other summer Sunday offering,
Entourage.
It was an interesting try; imagine a sitcom with a live audience, living room and kitchen sets, etc., but with the freedom of language and subject matter that HBO provides. Guess not enough people bought into the experiment for HBO's liking. The president of HBO Entertainment claims she wants to work with Louis C.K. again, but there are no current plans for a new series. At least this might give Louis more material for his stand-up act.

"
The Write Wing": White House personnel has been shifting quite a bit. Scott McClellen was replaced by Tony Snow, the Vice President was replaced by the newest model... And now, Bush's long-time speech-writer, Michael Gerson, has resigned (probably with a pretty good letter). From now on, we'll probably hear Bush's speeches fall to a less embellished tone, doing his normal "delivering facts you already knew" routine. Jon then made an excuse to sing, "Everything's comin' up rooooses!" and then explained, "I cannot sing or dance. I am what's known in the business as a 'single-threat'."

As I
mentioned last August, comedian Louis C.K. will be starring in
Lucky Louie, a new sitcom for HBO. I've been a pretty big fan of Louis C.K. for some time now, so I was thrilled to hear about this. At least, I would be thrilled if I actually had HBO, which I don't, so I guess instead of "thrilled" I should have written "really depressed." Oh well, I'm just glad this guy's got his own show, because he's very funny. Did you see his recent appearance on Leno when he kept calling his four year old daughter an "***hole" for not putting her shoes on when asked? That was freakin' hilarious. Anyway, they're calling it HBO's first sitcom. I guess
Curb Your Enthusiasm and earlier shows like
Dream On and
The Larry Sanders Show don't count because they weren't taped in front of an audience. The show kicks off this evening at 10:30 p.m. EST.
