What happens when you cross an old fashioned video game with the latest news headlines about politics, business and war? You get Newsbreaker, from MSNBC.
Basically it's like that game where you have to keep a ball in play with a paddle and hit colored bricks up above, something you probably played in the 80s. And yes, the name of that game has completely slipped my mind because, well, I'm old enough to remember playing the game in the 80s. Brick-something? I'm sure you folks will help me in the comments.
But you don't just hit the colored bricks, you also have to try to collect "news headlines." I'm not exactly sure why, but it's a pretty good way to waste an hour or so this afternoon at work.

So I watched the TV coverage all day long of the Boston "bombs" that turned out to be electronic devices promoting Cartoon Network's Aqua Teen Hunger Force. And I think it was screwed up on every angle (media, Turner Broadcasting), but the people who deserve the least amount of second guessing from us are the Boston police and city officials.
I mean, they were doing their job. We can't expect every police officer, every city official, every politician, to be hip to what ATHF is. And even if they were, so what? A bomb can't be placed in something with a wacky cartoon character on it? Yeah, they were up for a couple of weeks, but in this day and age you can't be too careful, especially since these things were put in some really odd public places.

Lost set, the one where we finally find out what the big idea was, on HD-DVD because of what the adult industry is deciding today. Steve Safran has an
interesting post up over at Lost Remote talking about how the porn industry may swing the format war between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.
Steven Hirsch from Vivid Entertainment is quoted talking about the troubles they have had in trying to adopt Blu-Ray, saying "It was difficult, and (Sony) tried to block us." This is not unlike the VHS/Betamax battle where the adult industry's choice helped promote the adoption of the VHS technology. While it operates completely off the radar of many consumers, the adult industry has a lot of power where technology is concerned.

...Seven Sites Worth LinkingAh, the web is such a wonderful place, isn't it? There's just so many places to find the littlest pieces of information, it's a wonder that people can get any work done... ever.
But that's what's great about my job; I and my fellow Squadders get to use our finely-honed time-wasting skills to dig up links to TV-related stories that we think you folks would like to read. Of course, we go to the same big sites that everyone else goes to: Yahoo, IMDb,
TVGuide, Google News,
Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, YouTube, etc. But there are other sites we like to read that have become reliable sources of information; some of them are blogs and some of them aren't. Here is a list of our favorites; just put this little gift under the Festivus pole and open when needed.

This guy has posted his picks for the 10 Best and 10 Worst Sci-Fi Openings of All-Time. He's made some good choices here. For best he includes Star Trek: TNG and Mystery Science Theater 3000, and for worst he includes Enterprise. Did he miss anything? Put your picks in the comments below. - Ken Levine has a really funny story about the cat from the 90s sitcom Almost Perfect.

I didn't catch this the other night, probably because
all of the commercials and cross-promotion that the networks do nowadays is just becoming white noise to me. But Lost
Remote is
reporting that during a promo last night, the
NBC announcer said it was "an unmissable
Law and Order: SVU." Unmissable?
Since it looks
like they don't want to use "Must See" anymore, there has to be a better word we can send to NBC than
"unmissable." Readers?

Rabbit ears, or television antennas, could soon become a relic
of the past. A new poll, out in time for the CES convention in Las Vegas, finds that 22% of Americans get their
television "over the air". That is, through television waves transmitted by stations. The big powerhouse for
television is cable, with 51% of people receiving their signal that way. Only 26% of American households have
satellites. The report says the findings "are significant, because they indicate that analog services are now the
minority in the TV marketplace." Interestingly, the poll also found that 25% of adults have a DVR hooked up to the
television set.
Personally, I like DirecTV and TiVo
over rather than cable. How do you
prefer to get your television?
