TV Squad: The Week Ahead

ChoOur Monday morning roundup of a half dozen things TV Squad readers - and TV fans in general - will be talking about this week.

1. The season premiere of The Hills. It literally hurts my stomach to think that people are going to watch this, but they will. (Tonight at 10pm on MTV.)

2. The Olympics. Many viewers will probably stop watching now that Michael Phelps has done his thing, but there's still plenty of running and jumping going on. (All week on NBC, along with various coverage on MSNBC, CNBC, USA, and Oxygen.)

3. The series premiere of The Cho Show. Hopefully Margaret Cho will have better luck with this than she had with All American Girl. (Stars Thursday at 11pm on VH-1.)

4. The season finale of Law and Order: CI. Chris Noth left last week. What will happen in the finale? (Sunday at 9 on USA.)

5. The Little League World Series. Guaranteed to be steroid-free! (All week on ESPN and ESPN2, semi-finals on ABC Saturday afternoon, final on ABC Sunday.)

6. The new fall season. Summer isn't over yet, but here's a handy guide to get you psyched.

ESPN now showing LLWS with 5 second delay

Little League logoAh, summer. The season when young kids get together in Williamsport, PA to make new friends, trade pins, get away from their parents, play baseball with other states and nations, and swear their asses off.

This year's Little League World Series coverage on ESPN has been plagued by many unfortunate moments caught live on television (though I really don't know what ESPN expects to hear when they mic the coaches). The first one I saw concerned a pitcher who was getting hit pretty badly by the opposing team, so the manager came out to calm him down, and the kid said something like "the umpire's shit" a couple of times, about the umps calls. When the manager tried to calm him down, the kid pushed him away and said "don't touch me!" The second incident involved another manager coming out to talk to his pitcher about the ump's calls, and he said "he's pinching the shit out of you" to the player.

But the last straw for ESPN came a few days ago, when, between innings, a coach's mic picked up the manager trying to stir up his team to score a run. After the coach gave a pep talk, one of his players said "just one fucking run!" And the coach slapped his face. Ouch.

So now the games will be on a 5 second delay, so they can bleep all that stuff out. Which is just as well. I'm sick of hearing Orel Hersheiser drop the f-bomb every 2 minutes.
