The Daily Show: May 8, 2008 - VIDEOS

Jon Stewart"You Don't Know Dick": It's about time for another segment! I was worried they had run out of wacky things about our VP. The Today Show's Meredith Vieira stopped by Dick Cheney's house, which doesn't look quite as pixelated in person, to show the world just how rich and creepy his home is. Abandoned children's toys and lonely swings aren't exactly inviting images. The most amusing part of this was not the sneak peek at the Cheney household (although I'm sure you loved it), but the sheer terror evident in the audience's reactions to any mention of "nude, pixelated Cheney genitalia". That's actually the name of my new emo band.

Is an apple bong too strong for Paramount?

Home GrownWhen I was younger, people I knew had various ways of smoking weed. One guy even made a bong out of an apple once. I didn't know it at the time, but now I look back and he seems like the MacGyver of pot smokers. Though he's not the only one who did such a thing, of course.

Case in point: the cover of the new Comedy Central Home Grown DVD. It's a DVD that showcases various episodes of Comedy Central shows, including Chappelle's Show, Reno 911, TV Funhouse, The Sarah Silverman Program, Lewis Black's Root of All Evil, and Strangers with Candy. This is the cover that Paramount released to media outlets back in March. Now they've changed the cover to this, a closeup of a giant mushroom. Looks like they had second thoughts about having a bong on the cover of a DVD and decided to change it. Of course, I'm not sure if a mushroom connection is something they thought about all the way (and also having some people think of a penis when they see the cover, ahem).

The DVD comes out on June 10.

Lewis Black: The TV Squad interview

Lewis Black In the last twelve years, Lewis Black has gone from being "that angry guy on The Daily Show" to a comedy icon. Now, he finally has his own show.

In Lewis Black's Root of All Evil, which airs on Wednesdays at 10:30 PM ET on Comedy Central, two comedians argue why the pop culture item they represent is "the root of all evil." Last week's premiere episode, for instance, pitted Oprah against the Catholic church. Black plays the judge who controls the proceedings and makes the ultimate verdict. Sounds corny, but the first episode, which featured Paul F. Tompkins and Greg Giraldo, was wickedly funny and just a tiny bit subversive, everything you want in a good comedy.

I spoke to Black by phone last week; he was in Atlantic City on his stand-up tour. We discussed everything from the 2008 election to being on a cable news show with Ben Stein to sharing a jail cell with Jim Norton. The interview is after the jump.

Watch every minute of every Daily Show episode. Ever.

Jon StewartHey, Viacom, don't screw this up. After being hated by YouTube-visiting Daily Show fans everywhere, Viacom is taking a big step in making up cool points. Starting today, Viacom will have every minute of the Daily Show, dating all the way back to the first episode in 1999, online at DailyShow.com. Sorry, Craig Kilborn lovers, it's just ol' Jonny Stew and his crew.

Of course, this move is probably less about pleasing the fans and more about the mad cash that Viacom will make in advertising. Hopefully the ads won't be too intrusive on the videos and folks will be able to watch their favorite "This Week In God" without being bombarded with Lars and the Real Girl imagery.

The Daily Show: October 9, 2007

Tiki Barber and Dr. RuthBefore we start: Isn't this picture of Tiki Barber and Dr. Ruth the greatest photo? I have no idea what's going on, but i like to imagine that it captured the split second before Barber crushed Dr. Ruth's hand and flipped her over his shoulder, just to show her who's boss.

Pam Anderson has married Rick Solomon. Why should you care? Pam Anderson once made a crazy sex tape with Tommy Lee and Rick Solomon is the night-vision fellow from the Paris Hilton tape. That can only mean that the craziest sex tape of all time is right around the corner. I heard it's going to be in 3-D and have Smell-O-Vision. Fancy!

Comedy Central picks up Lewis Black's show

Lewis BlackEarlier this year, Adam told you about the pilot that comedian Lewis Black was filming for Comedy Central titled The Root of All Evil. Back then the show was described as a roundtable discussion a la Politically Incorrect or Real Time with Bill Maher or maybe Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn. Well, the network has now picked up the show, and it seems the format has changed (I think).

The show will now feature two celebrities or two pop culture topics that go up against each other. Black will be the moderator and will give the final decision on who "wins" at the end of the show. Comedy Central said the show will put pop culture on trial.

The Daily Show: September 26, 2007

Jamie FoxxFirst of all, the Daily Show team must have been madly in love with that "translating gibberish" joke because that set up was way too elaborate, with very little pay-off. I'll just pretend they did it mainly as a segue to the UN Summit story. Yes. That's it.

"Showdown at the UN Corral": At the UN General Assembly, Bush and Iran's Ahmadinejad had a face-to-face showdown without actually coming face-to-face. Bush also seemed to get some, uh, interesting reactions from representatives from certain countries during his speech.

Michael Moore"You Don't Know Dick": First of all, I hope I never hear the phrase "Dick nugget" ever again. Secondly, Dick Cheney's lair is nothing but a pixelated mess in Google Earth. Maybe it's the sleep deprivation, but I laughed a little too hard at the "very low-resolution spider" joke. I want pixelation powers.

"Clusterfuck to the White House": A member of Rudy Giuliani's campaign team had some cocaine problems, so the cocaine problem guy had his "NAACP equals National Association of Retarded People" daddy take his place. Speaking of inhaling stuff, Former EPA Administrator Christie Todd Whitman says she's not responsible for allowing people to work among the Ground Zero asbestos. I really wish some of the big news networks would start using old news clips the way The Daily Show does. It's depressingly effective.

Jon Stewart"Clusterf@#k to the White House": Man, Wolf Blitzer isn't having a very good time with these debates. They must have been extremely desperate to kill minutes, making poor Blitzer show the places with candidates keep their water. By the way, I have been hearing nothing but ridiculous things from Mitt Romney. It's astounding. I'm sure The Daily Show could devote an entire week of programming to making fun of Romney. "Non sequitur". Pfft.

Comedy Central picks up Root of All Evil pilot

lewis blackWell, I told you about the pilot taping of The Root of All Evil and Julia actually went to the taping, but now it's official: Comedy Central has picked up the pilot, so keep your eyes peeled so you can judge the show for yourself.

Actually, don't keep your eyes peeled, because peeling your eyes actually makes your vision worse. Many people have experienced irreversible ocular damage because of that metaphor. Nasty business.
