With the second week of competitions tonight on
So You Think You Can Dance, I wanted to point out a trend:
reality dance show contestants can't leave television. Several contestants and a few choreographers have jumped ship and have appeared on other reality shows.
The jump basically can plant an already established fanbase onto a different television show. One great example is Ty Murray on
Dancing with the Stars. I'm not sure what the percentage of votes for Ty came from fans of Chelsie Hightower and her work from
SYTYCD or his charm, but he definitely benefited from someone who knew to make routines that were camera friendly.

(S08E02) - "We all know what Bruno wants." - ChuckThe show was a little off this week with the random sound cue during Ty's judging, the frozen video with Lawrence, the new judges paddles and Steve-O, but the performances were a lot better than last week. Most of the weaker dancers improved, and the rest basically stayed in the same scoring bracket. After the jump, an overall look at all the performances.

(S07E12) It's time to head back to the ballroom, and week 6 brought with it another change to the format. In addition to one regular performance from each couple, they all got together for a big group number as well. Shotyme stopped by to choreograph what was billed as the "Old School Hip Hop" performance. As you might expect, that went better for some than it did for others. We also had a special guest judge this week. Michael Flatley, best known for Lord of the Dance, filled in for Len Goodman. He got the full DWTS experience, witnessing some fantastic performances... and Cloris. A look at all of the performances, is after the jump.

Dancing With the Stars is a show that makes no sense to me. I understand the appeal of it; I'm usually very interested in any program that involves celebrities doing ridiculous things on national television and I know that people love bright shiny costumes, but it still somehow manages to hold no interest for me whatsoever.
With that said, I know that the announcement of each season's
DWTS cast is heavily anticipated and rumored for months before the actual announcement. We heard that
Dan Marino may be a contestant; a claim that was
soon denied. 82-year-old
Cloris Leachman was another name floated, as was Magnum, P.I. himself,
Tom Selleck.
Kim Kardashian and
Kathy Griffin were also said to have been approached.
As with most rumors, some of these turned out to be false, but others had some truth to them. Follow me after the jump for the official (and completely insane) cast of
Dancing With the Stars' seventh season, along with some twists the producers have cooked up for this go-around.

At first, I was a little disappointed with this season's
So You Think You Can Dance. I found most of the routines underwhelming. Furthermore, Mary and Nigel constantly telling us that it's the "best dancers they've ever had" and the most "competition they've ever seen" is a red flag. I think most viewers, those with dance training and without, know
what they like and
why they like it. And viewers don't like being told they
should like something.
So I started thinking about my favorite pieces from past seasons. I thought about how I got goose bumps when Anya and Danny did the
Viennese Waltz. I remembered how Benji's solos always put a smile on my face. I'll concede that season four hit it's stride after this week. But, you can't argue that previous seasons, especially two and three, left a lot for these new dancers to live up to.
Some of my favorite pieces from Fox's hit show are after the jump. I'll probably come up with more but here's something to start you off. Enjoy!

Is
David Cook dating Lacey Schwimmer?
OK! magazine is reporting that the
American Idol front-runner (he's one of 'em) has hooked up with the
So You Think You Can Dance favorite during the taping of last week's "Idol Gives Back" special. Lacey came in fourth this past summer on
SYTYCD, and David is on a pretty good track to at least match that achievement. The article has all kinds of quotes from all kinds of anonymous sources, so that means it has to be legit, right?
The fact that David kind of sucked last week might lead one to think that a hot, new fling may have temporarily distracted him from the business at hand. Things got back on track this week, though. The article also states that Lacey is shy about going public with their burgeoning relationship, so she's been sitting behind the judges rather than with "David's Friends and Family." Has anyone seen her there? If so, can you tell her that she was awesome on
SYTYCD for me? Then ask about her and Cook, but make sure you specify you're talking about David. Otherwise ... awkward!

(
S03E23) Season three went out with a bang. Cat said in the opening that the show was a full two hours, with no padding. She wasn't kidding. If we count the two musical guests, and the goofy animated Cat/Nigel dance number, there were 18 performances. 18!
There were a few video montages looking back over the season, but with the exception of the one that featured Sex (we really didn't need to revisit that), all of them were pretty well done, and kept the show moving right along. There was just very little not to like about this show. Ok, there were a couple things, but we'll get to them, as well as the big winner, after the jump.

(
S03E22) A quick look at the little weather widget on my desktop tells me that summer is coming to an end next week. If that seems soon to you, I'm guessing you don't live in the greater Seattle area. At any rate, it's fitting that our premature change of season coincides with the ending of the best of the summer reality shows.
As Cat said in her introduction, "This is it." We've been watching these kids for weeks now, and it all comes down to one last night, stuffed to the gills with dancing. The show did have its moments of stretching, but the interviews and the looks back at auditions really played well here. Judging everything, Nigel and Mary of course, and they were joined by Dan Karaty. My first snarky thought was that they brought Dan in to judge to keep him from choreographing a number. But that was mean of me, and I have to say, I thought he did a good job in his judge's seat tonight. After the jump, a rundown of all the performances.

(
S03E21) I'm still scratching my head over the fact that 'pre-season' football meant we had to wait through the weekend to find out who the top four dancers are, but the results are finally in. Of course, with an hour to fill they couldn't get to the results right away.
The show kicked off with another crazy number, to the tune of "2:19" by Tom Waits. It was very inventive and practically screamed "Wade Robson choreographed me!" Production meant that the dancers needed a break for wardrobe and makeup after that, so there was a guest performance. Titus Fotso and the African Dance Ensemble came out to perform. I'm a fan of musical guests on the results show, but I'll take a dance exhibition over that every time, especially one as good as this. It was a great performance, and I would be all for giving Titus a slot as guest choreographer next season.

(
S03E20) Holy smokes. Call me crazy if you don't agree, but I'm calling this the best episode of the season. There hasn't been a standout number one performance every week, but there has always been something that didn't quite work, or didn't quite measure up to the rest. I didn't find that here.
It would seem that the talk about the choreographers stepping things up wasn't just talk as all of them delivered great routines for the dancers to perform. The criticisms were few and far between this week, from me, and from the judges. That would be Nigel and Mary as usual, joined this week by Debbie Allen. After the jump, we'll get to all of the performances, and a rant about Fox scheduling.

(
S03E19) The show kicked off with what I am calling the Broadway
Matrix, starring Lauren as Trinity. It was a fun number, set to "Get Up" by Ciarra. I thought that giving Lauren the lead role might have been a bad omen for what was to come for her when we got to the results. There was plenty of other
filler stuff to get to before we would find that out though.
First, Cat had a little chat with the judges about dance as a career. Nigel expounded on why it is so difficult, comparing it to being a professional athlete because the career is so short. He noted that the whole time someone is trying to get work as a professional dancer they have to be mindful of what they will be doing in the future. Adam added that the reason that people go through all of the struggles is because it is so full of joy. Mary was asked whether or not a girl can win the competition this year and she responded, "Absolutely a girl could win." I agree with that.

(
S03E18) Holy smokes. Episode 18 already? Our summer, and the
SYTYCD competition, is flying by. As Cat pointed out in the intro, we're only two weeks away from crowning the season three champ. The everybody dances the same solo format from last week was out the window, which I think was for the best. You can have too much of a good thing. There was also a welcome absence of political commentary, as I think that really took away from what the show is about last week. That doesn't mean that there wasn't controversy though, but we'll get to that later. More about all of the performances, after the jump.

(
S03E17) We've turned a corner in the season three competition. The eliminations to go from ten dancers to eight represented the first choices made by the fans at home. Would they get it right? Or would this be another head scratching result like so many of those the judges brought about with their sometimes strange decisions? In the spirit of the results show, you'll have to wait to find out.
That gets us to the first point about the results show this week. It was certainly worth hanging around to find out who was going home. Given the dancers that are left, there was certainly some question as far as who that would be. That said, as an episode, this was far and away the worst of the season. They've stretched to fill time before, but this was the first time that I felt like they were just jerking the audience around. It was 30 minutes of show stuffed in a one hour bag. But there were results to be had, and I'll have those after the jump.

(
S03E16) Cat kicked off the show reminding us that the decision is now in the hands of the viewers. That will put an end to the weekly musings about the judges curious elimination decisions. However, I don't think there will be any shortage of controversy with the viewers in charge. If the week six performance show is any indication, you could make a case for anyone to stay, so somebody is going to be disappointed with tomorrow's results. That's getting the cart ahead of the course though, there is a whole performance show to deal with.
Viewer voting isn't the only change this week. There are new partnerships to take a look at, and along with those five partner dances all ten of the contestants danced the same Wade Robson choreographed solo. Witnessing all of this were, of course, Nigel and Mary. Mia Michaels was along for the ride as guest judge. It all made for a pretty impressive night of competition. We'll try and wrap it all up in a nice neat bow after the jump.

(
S03E15) It seems like the summer is just flying by. Here we are, already down to the top ten. The competition has been very tough up to this point. Still, considering the talent of the contestants left, and adding in the fact that all of the partnerships are out the window, it's only going to get tougher.
Jean-Marc Genereaux got the nod to choreograph the big opening number this week, to the tune of "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy." It was my favorite of the opening numbers so far. Lots of energy, and the period costumes were great. It's pretty impressive that, after all of the work that goes in to the weekly routine, the group is still able to come together and deliver these big numbers each week. As fun as they are though, we do tune in for the results. All the details are after the jump.
