New TV on DVD releases this week

KingsHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

This might not be the biggest DVD release day in history, but it's certainly one of the business. There's something for everyone this week, including a bunch of "Fan Favorites" DVDs for various sitcoms, including NewsRadio, All in the Family, and I Dream of Jeannie. That's a neat idea, though I wonder, if you're a big fan, wouldn't you already have the DVDs?

Oh, and remember Day Break, the ABC mystery series from a couple of years ago? You can get the Complete Series. I don't think I ever saw the end of that show. You can watch it on SlashControl, so maybe I'll start there before buying the set.

  • All in the Family - Fan Favorites
  • Ax Men - Season 2
  • Barney Miller - Fan Favorites
  • Bewitched - Fan Favorites

Super Friends DVDHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

I have to admit that I had no idea what The City was when I saw that season one was coming out on DVD this week (an Amazon exclusive). Is it the show Loving became in the late 90s? No, it's the spinoff of The Hills. Oh yes, let me run out and buy two copies of this. One to play until it wears out, and the other to have on my shelf when I can't play the first one anymore.

I have to pick up some of these Super Friends sets at some point. I really loved that show in the 70s. I think these "lost episodes" might be from the 80s.

  • 90210 - Season 1
  • Adam-12 - Season 3
  • Are You Being Served? - Complete Collection

Kevin James is returning to CBS, sort of

The King of QueensThe King of Queens is not returning to CBS. However, Kevin James is. He's performing in a series of interstitials on Monday night in an effort to promote his soon-to-be-released movie Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

Will this launch James to movie stardom? I don't know. He's following the title formula of such movies as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigalo, so we can probably guess the format and formula of the film.

Not every comedy TV star can make the transition to movies, and I don't know if Kevin James has the personality to hold a film on his own. It worked for Jim Carrey because of his wild, character-driven personality and it worked for Rob Schneider because...actually, I don't think it worked for Rob Schneider. If it did, I have no idea why.

It's interesting to note that Paul Blart is produced by Sony Pictures and The King of Queens was produced by Sony Pictures TV. Sony Pictures must own Kevin James' soul.

Queen for a Day is coming back

QueenIf you have a leisure suit in your closet and think it'll never be in style again, you may be wrong. Everything has a way of coming back around, even game shows. With that in mind, Queen for a Day, a game show that ran in daytime for 20 years, is being resurrected for today. RDF USA has obtained format rights and plan to present their resurrected, revamped edition to cable and broadcast nets this week.

Queen for a Day was originally a radio show, but appeared on TV in 1947 and ran on and off until 1970. It was sort of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition of its day, albeit on a much more modest level. Female contestants would appear to tell her story of woe and misfortune in order to be eligible to become queen for a day, wherein she would win prizes, be feted with a crown and robe, offered roses and other gifts. "Make every woman a queen, for every single day," was the host, Jack Bailey's closing line each day. If it sounds hokey, it was. Comedy shows regularly satirized it.

Stump the King - King of Queens

Patton OswaltI've been inundated with letters lately but this one from "Kathy" seemed very urgent.

She asks..."Can you tell me the name of the bar from King of Queens?"

Well, Kathy, the short answer is yes, yes I can.

The long answer, however is only slightly longer. At the risk of name-dropping, I decided that the fastest way to get the answer to this question would be to call my friend Patton Oswalt. I always like to point out that even though Patton has become a full fledged movie star (Ratatouille, Balls of Fury) he is never too busy to be a very cool guy. His true talent, however, is telling jokes and if you ever get a chance to see him live, take it.

Moffett in, Cullen out on CW's Life is Wild

Brett Cullen as Goodwin on LostBrett Cullen has been replaced in the new CW series Life is Wild. This really comes as very little shock since I can't think of anyone who was looking forward to this series.

Cullen is being replaced by D.W. Moffett who was most recently seen on the summer series Hidden Palms. You may also remember Moffett from such forgettable series as Skin & For Your Love.

Personally, I think Moffett is a little young to play a seasoned veterinarian and father of a teenager, but I'm sure his youth had a lot to do with the recast.

A series from Hurwitz and Oswalt? Perhaps.

patton oswaltMost folks probably know comedian Patton Oswalt as Spence on the recently-departed King of Queens, but us comedy fans have known him for even longer as a very funny man who stands up and does comedy. He was the mastermind behind the Comedians of Comedy tour, and he's done voice work for a few Adult Swim series, including Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Also, he plays the lead role in the upcoming Pixar flick, Ratatouille.

Kevin James has a hot wife in real life

Kevin James and wifeSome quick baby news! Kevin James and his wife Steffiana just had their second child Shea Joelle James. Thank goodness she doesn't have a crazy celebrity baby name (I'm looking at you, Pilot Inspektor). Actually, the news here is not about the baby, but about Steffiana. Look at her! She's hot! Possibly hotter than Leah Remini, Kevin's onscreen lady on the King of Queens. Doesn't this give a little bit of hope to all you fellows out there that don't quite have leading man looks? The lesson here is... You too can get the girl, as long as you have a great sense of humor. And long-running sitcom.

Oh, and Keri Russell just had a baby boy, but she doesn't have a smokin' hot wife.

What to Watch May 14 - 20

King of Queens on CBS and Desperate Housewives on ABCHere are AOL Television's top picks of the week.

The King of Queens (Mon., 9PM ET, CBS) series finale
Another "fat husband, hot wife" sitcom bites the dust. What, does that only leave According to Jim? Guess the genre wore itself out. The King of Queens was probably the best of the lot, thanks to a genuinely funny cast. In the finale, Doug (Kevin James) wants a divorce after nine years, but Carrie (Leah Remini) thinks they can still save their marriage by adopting a child. Meanwhile, dad Arthur's wedding to Ava doesn't go as planned.

Gilmore Girls (Tue., 8PM ET, The CW) series finale
Two best friends who happen to be mother and daughter: that was the premise of this show when it first premiered and it still holds true seven years later. I'm sad to see the Gilmores go, but ending with Rory's graduation from Yale seems only fitting. Our Girls have truly grown up. The finale sees Rory getting an intriguing job offer -- and meeting hero Christiane Amanpour. Luke goes into overdrive to organize a celebration, which provokes Lorelai to do something unexpected.
