Right Now on Cinematical

The folks at our sister site Cinematical are working hard to give you news and reviews of the best -- and worst -- the silver screen has to offer. Here are some of their musings on the latest blockbusters, indies, and everything in between:

Wait a second, Katherine Heigl makes HOW much money?

There are three things I know about Katherine Heigl.

1. She stars in ABC's Grey's Anatomy.

2. She's not afraid to speak up if she thinks the show's writers have screwed up.

3. She'll never let you hear the end of it if you pronounce her name wrong, and she'll hunt you down like a dog.

Now there's a fourth thing I know about Heigl: she's the fifth highest paid actress in Hollywood.

Sexual tension between George & Julia is good TV

Julia Roberts seems to love some George ClooneyMillions of dollars have been spent in an effort to find the second coming of Friends.

I have a suggestion for all those executives who continue to scratch their heads in their corner offices, wondering where on earth their next hit TV show is going to come from. Stop ignoring the stars that have been under your feet on Hollywood Boulevard and throw them some money to film their daily lives and interactions with each other. Some real stars too... no more past their prime 80's sitcom actors!

If you ever wonder why Oprah gets paid the big bucks, her special last night is a good example. She's figured the above idea out and made some pocket change on it last night in the first ever Oprah Winfrey Oscar Special.

Besides the fact it took someone so long to come up with this concept, I cannot believe that Julia Robers and George Clooney have never been romantically linked together...

Would you like to have dinner with Leno?

Jay LenoI guess I'll just be blunt right off the bat here: what the hell is wrong with Esquire readers?

The mag asked readers to name the people they'd like to have dinner with, and the winners were...Jay Leno and Condoleeza Rice?!

Some of the others that made the list I can understand: Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, even stars like George Clooney and Angelina Jolie (you could ask her about world hunger and her kid). But I think that after eating dinner with Jay Leno for just five minutes I'd want to punch him. He'd probably just be laughing all the time, cracking jokes, and spitting food all over the place. I mean, really, what's his dinner appeal? I would think late night hosts like Letterman and Ferguson and Rose would be more interesting.

As for Rice: eh. Maybe Esquire readers misunderstood the question. Maybe they thought it said "what would you like to have for dinner?" Then the Rice answer would make sense.

Tony Awards to go on without a host

Radio City Music HallIt was recently announced that the 60th annual Tony Awards will go hostless this June 11, because "the 60th Anniversary show is bigger than just one host". Or maybe no one wanted to step up and take the chance of getting ripped apart by the public if things don't run smoothly. Anyway, instead of following the lone emcee tradition, this year's show at Radio City Music Hall will be carried by 60 different stars, including Julia Roberts, Oprah Winfrey, Bernadette Peters, and Hank Azaria.

Back in 2004, MTV's Video Music Awards went hostless, and I remember feeling somewhat disoriented while watching it. Whether this was because I was watching MTV or because it was hostless, is still up for debate.

Deal Or No Deal women on People's list of most beautiful

Deal Or No DealOK, so People is coming out with their annual "100 Most Beautiful" list, and all the usual suspects are on it: Angelina Jolie, Julia Roberts, Halle Berry, Scarlett Johansson, and for the guys, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matthew McConaghey. But among the 100 Most Beautiful People In The World is ... the 26 supermodels that hold the briefcases on NBC's Deal Or No Deal.

Now, I don't have the issue in front of me, but did the 26 take up 26 spots in the top 100 (boy, that would really make People's job easier) or did they just include them as "one?" That would seem like an insult to the women, eh? That they're all lumped together and interchangeable.

Wouldn't it have been funny if they picked 25 of the models, and just didn't tell us which one they left out?

This is how I know Saturdays on TV suck

Pretty WomanI've bitched before about how the networks seem to have given up on Saturdays. But tonight ... tonight's a little ridiculous. I'm watching ABC right now, and guess what it's playing? Pretty Woman! That's right ... a sixteen year-old movie, that TBS AMC won't touch because it's not fresh enough, is taking up a piece of a major network's schedule. And it's not even Christmas!

Of course, I'm watching the stupid thing (nothing else on ... maybe the NBA playoffs, but ... eh). Here's what I'm learning from this experience:

1. Julia Roberts is the least convincing hooker I've ever seen.
2. Early '90s double-breasted suits look kinda silly now.
3. Richard Gere never did anything for me as an actor.
4. Jason Alexander was actually thin once ... once.
5. This is the movie that inflicted "The King of Wishful Thinking" upon us.
6. This movie isn't nearly as funny as I thought it was in 1990.
7. I really, really need to get a girlfriend.

What's on tonight: celebrities cooking all over the place, Marilyn, Julia, Henry

  • TuckervilleABC is showing Pretty Woman at 8 (not sure why - it's 15 years old and has been seen by almost everyone by now).
  • CBS has a new 48 Hours Mystery on Marilyn Monroe at 8, follwed by Nicholson in Something's Gotta Give.
  • NBC cancels Celebrity Cooking Showdown, but tonight at 8 there are two eps? So all the fans (both of you) can get caught up. It's followed by a Law and Order: CI repeat.
  • FOX has the Subway Fresh 500 all night. No, that's not a new big sandwich, it's NASCAR.
  • Also at 8: if those celebs above cooking isn't enough for you, John Corbett joins Emeril on Food Network for some "Country Cookin."
  • At 8:15, IFC has Shallow Grave, followed by new eps of The Henry Rollins Show and Samurai 7.
  • At 9, TLC has a new Trading Spaces, followed by two new eps of Tuckerville.
  • At 10 (or after Braves baseball), TBS has Back to the Future II.
  • NBC has a repeat SNL at 11:30, with Natalie Portman and Fall Out Boy.

Kiefer Sutherland drinks a lot, lives in a seedy neighborhood

Kiefer SutherlandRather fascinating interview with 24 star Kiefer Sutherland in the new Rolling Stone, where he and the interviewer talk about everything from why he looks forward to the day when he doesn't have to do the show anymore (though check out this news from earlier today!), why he drinks a lot, his neat freak habits, and the weird giant warehouse he lives in.

He also hates foods with certain textures. I can identify with that. I freak out if I ever touch a peach. All that fuzz. *shiver*

Things I Hate About TV: Guest stars on cop shows

I am going to limit this rant to Law and Order since it is the primary offender when it comes to putting guest stars on its many, many shows. It's as though the writers can't help but make every single celebrity guest star the guilty person! Do they know it is a dead giveaway to the viewers? If I see Dean Cain, Fred Savage, or Dana Delany as a seemingly minor character in the beginning of the show, I know they'll end up on trial or at least be the guilty ones by the end of the episode. Last night, I was watching a rerun of Criminal Intent where Lee Tergesen from Oz appeared as a minor character in the beginning. Guess who ended up being guilty of murder? Surprise, surprise. I remember Julia Roberts being on the original Law and Order during season nine, does anyone remember whether she was guilty?
