We constantly hear of the British invasion of American TV (
The Office,
Life on Mars and many others), but there is one executive producer swimming against the current. Former
Friends executive producer Adam Chase is working on a
sci-fi comedy series called Clone starring Jonathan Pryce for BBC3.
The show is about a scientist who invents the first successful human clone to be used as a prototype super-soldier, but the clone ends up acting like a pacifist. The series is also being directed by
The King of Queens alum, Rob Schiller.
Will the show work? I'm honestly not sure. The British are a different audience than the American one and they have a different style for their comedies. Their seasons are traditionally six episodes and all written by the same person. This format allows for more risk-taking in their programming and no question of ownership. Many American shows have enjoyed success over there, but I can't think of a single example of an American being the creative force behind an original and successful British show.
I just hope Mr. Chase can adjust to the much smaller budgets of British productions.

Uma Thurman is set to star alongside Paddy Considine and Jonathan Pryce in My Zinc Bed, an adaptation of David Hare's 2000 play expected to air on HBO sometime next year.
The movie focuses on an alcoholic, Considine, who has an affair with his boss' wife, played by Thurman. Hare is involved with the project, which is being directed by Anthony Page, who has directed for television several times, including the Masterpiece Theater miniseries Middlemarch.
Hare's other projects include the screenplay for The Hours, for which he received an Oscar nomination in 2003.
Thurman previously appeared on HBO in 2003's Hysterical Blindness.

Baker Street Irregulars, not to be confused with the live-action Disney movie The North Avenue Irregulars, is coming to BBC1 in 2007. The two-part family drama is based on the Sherlock Holmes book A Study in Scarlett. The Irregulars are a group of street kids who must solve the mysterious disappearance of two members of their gang while Holmes, accused of murder, is placed under house arrest. Holmes will be played by Jonathan Pryce and his partner Watson will be portrayed by Bill Paterson. Pryce is well-recognized by American audiences, appearing in such films as Brazil and Glengarry Glen Ross. Production on the series begins later this month. Producers hope the new program will make the character of Sherlock Holmes appealing again to a modern audience.
