When I first started exploring this project, there were a few shows that I knew were going to be important to hit. This is the first of those.
Firefly was
Joss Whedon's sci-fi western series. The show mustered disappointing ratings in its short eleven-episode run on FOX.
Since then it's gone on to near mythic cult status. There was such an outcry of support from its loyalists, the Browncoats, over its cancellation that the producers made a feature film sequel. That movie,
Serenity, answered a lot of questions about the future fate of the cast. Unfortunately, like the television series, it couldn't find quite enough people to show up and tune in to warrant a sequel. Nevertheless, the few morsels of
Firefly we did get are enough to prove that this is one of the most innovative and enjoyable series ever to hit the airwaves.

I'm almost to the end of
Firefly, my
Jane After Dark readers' choice for this week. I really love this series, from the quirky characters to the general theme of a band of renegades burgling their way through the universe.
But even though it's set 500 years in the future,
Firefly isn't your typical sci-fi space series that includes all manner of aliens and weird creatures. They're on a spaceship, and yet they rob trains. How cool is that?! It's like
Alias Smith and Jones meets
Babylon 5.
As with the other Whedon shows I've watched –
Buffy the Vampire Slayer and
Angel – the stories are fun and deep and fanciful (yes, I said fanciful), but it's the characters and their interactions that make the shows.

When it comes to science fiction conventions you can always tell the difference between those panelists who are newbies and those who are veterans. As soon as the panelists for Stargate Atlantis took their seats you could tell that they were all seasoned veterans of the convention universe. They were relaxed, had fun with each other, and had fun with the audience. Combine those elements together and it makes for an entertaining hour and gives you a sense that they are talking to you...despite the 4000 other people in the hall.
There weren't many new bits of information that came from this panel that hadn't already been mentioned during the Robert Picardo phone conference a few weeks ago. Yet, there were still some interesting pieces of information about the stars, the writers, and some behind the scenes items. You can read some of these after the jump.

(S05E03) I have to admit, when I saw in the previews last week that we were getting a Ronon episode, I wasn't exactly excited. I figured it would be another stand alone episode, probably ok, but I don't usually think of Ronon as a character to carry the big load. Having now watched "Broken Ties," I'll say I was pleasantly surprised. Jason Momoa took advantage of being given the A-story and delivered his best performance to date. And along the way we got a little more background on Woolsey, and some answers to Teyla's burning question.

(S05E02) And with that, season five has begun. I've really been looking forward to this episode for the simple fact that it would give us our first look at just what kind of leader Woolsey is going to be. There are certainly a lot of things coming in season five, but that one, more than any other, has the ability to really affect how the season is ultimately received. We got that first look, and it was an interesting one. Along the way, we also caught up with our old friend Dr. Beckett. And Dr. Keller got to step out of the background (and climb into bed) for a pretty big story of her own. We'll get to all that, after the jump.

I was pretty excited when our friendly neighborhood FedEx guy dropped off the envelope with the promo package for season five of Atlantis. And I remained so even after my DVD player balked at reading the disk. It just served as a fine example as to why it's not geeky to have a computer connected to your television, it's just handy.
As the disk started up I was thinking it would be a good idea to do an early look post about where things look to be heading in season five. Unfortunately, Sci Fi only sent out the first episode of the season, and it's not telling us much of anything about season five, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The episode plays like S04E21 right up to the last scene, where season five begins to take over. Given where we last left our friends in Atlantis, that was probably to be expected. More, including some minor spoilers, after the jump.

Jewel Staite revealed some information that may have all you Browncoats making room on your shelf for another box set of Joss Whedon's brilliant-but-canceled
Firefly. Staite, you all remember, played sweet Kaylee on that short-lived series.
At a convention in Australia two weeks ago, Staite mentioned that she may be headed to Los Angeles to do some commentary for a special box set of
Firefly. Here's what she said:
"I just heard that they're re-releasing Firefly, a special edition of Firefly in a box set. They actually asked me if I was able to come down to L.A. and do commentary in the spring at some point. So I think that would be fun."Continue reading Firefly may get special edition box set

(
S03E20) "I'm just saying... They're a cool team... and we're a cool team..."
This week
Atlantis brought out what I consider to be a classic season finale. By the end of the show there are questions about who is going to live, the survival of the city, and an impending war with the replicators. As long as they don't kick off season four with Shepard stepping out of a steamy shower, or waking up next to Suzanne Pleshette, things are looking very good for the future of
Atlantis.Continue reading Stargate Atlantis: First Strike (season finale)

Even though the Season 3 finale of the Sci Fi hit show
Stargate Atlantis airs only in two weeks, cast and crew are already preparing Season 4. Writers have almost half the season written up, episodes are getting shot, and casting directors are working around the clock to find guest stars for the new season. Actually, the latter even found a new show regular in the person of
Firefly's Jewel Staite.

Do
you ever get the feeling that someone is trying to squeeze every penny out of
Firefly fans? Yeah, me too.
Titan Books, which published a
companion
book to
Serenity, is preparing a companion book to the
Firefly television series. Creator Joss
Whedon wrote the introduction to the
Serenity companion, which features the original script to the movie,
storyboards, production notes and behind-the-scenes stuff. No word on whether Joss will endorse the new book.
Firefly: The Official Companion is scheduled for release this summer.

The
British think that
Serenity, the movie based on the short-lived
Firefly series, was pretty damn good.
Good enough, in fact, that they voted it among the top movies of the year in a poll for Channel 4. It comes in at
Number 3.
The station's website says "the excitement and spectacular set-pieces are in place, but they
are balanced by strong characterisation, distinctive dialogue and effective performances." Yes, that is a rather
tempered way of saying "we love these guys!" I know it was my favorite movie-going experience of the year
because 1) I went on opening night with a bunch of
Firefly fans who cheered throughout the movie and then
freaked out when a certain character met up with a certain toothpick the size of a telephone pole, and 2) I
love those those guys!
Here are the Top 5 movies according to the Channel 4 poll:
5.
Crash4.
King Kong3.
Serenity2.
Batman Begins1.
Harry
Potter and the Goblet of FireThat number one pick is a real shocker, eh?

Whitney Matheson over at the Pop Candy blog on USA Today has an
interview with Joss Whedon, who ranks
No. 13 on her list of
Top 100 Entertainers of
2005. Personally, I'd put Whedon at #2 (I'm still a bit peeved about a certain character who was killed off in
Serenity) and I'd put Steve Carell at #1. But, I digress. The interview clears up the
Entertainment Weekly article that
mis-represented Whedon's feelings about
Serenity and
Firefly. He doesn't directly reference the EW
story, possibly because he did the Pop Candy interview before the article printed, but he does say that he'd love to do
more with the crew of the
Firefly and, he says, huge DVD sales may help him get two more movies made. I know I
did my part for him this Christmas. He also talks about what he'll be doing in 2006: writing
Wonder Woman,
creating a
new Buffy comic,
and pushing very hard for that
Spike
film we've all been hearing so much about. It's a good interview that didn't really tell me a whole lot that I
didn't already know, but it's nice to hear from him.

If I were fellow blogger
Keith, I would be writing this
article from a totally different angle. I would probably be doing cartwheels at the thought of a
Buffy the Vampire
Slayer movie, written and directed by Joss Whedon. Alas, I missed the boat when it came to
Buffy, so
today's news breaks my heart. An article in the latest Entertainment Weekly with Joss Whedon says he has come to terms
with the fact that there won't be any more
Firefly movies.
Serenity only made $25 million in
the United States and it's not yet clear how well the DVD will do (it went on sale this week). But, that amount of
money isn't enough for Universal to launch a franchise of films. Sigh.
