TNT & TBS have big plans for original content

TNTAmong many announcements from TNT at upfront week was the stated goal to dramatically increase original content. The network aims to eventually reach 80% original content, with plans for three original nights a week by 2010. How are they going to reach those goals? With cops. Lots and lots of cops.

We've already heard about the new Donnie Wahlberg DEA series, Morse Code. Three other cop shows are in development at the network, including Delta Blues, from executive producer George Clooney, which follows the story of a Memphis cop who does a little Elvis impersonating on the side. 24 co-creator Joel Surnow is also joining the TNT family with an as yet untitled series built around an ATF agent. Finishing off the law enforcement party is Angel City. Written by L.A. cop Will Beall and Barry Schindel, Angel City is being compared to Adam-12. Read on past the jump for the less cuff-heavy goings on over at TNT.

The Daily Show: September 26, 2007

Jamie FoxxFirst of all, the Daily Show team must have been madly in love with that "translating gibberish" joke because that set up was way too elaborate, with very little pay-off. I'll just pretend they did it mainly as a segue to the UN Summit story. Yes. That's it.

"Showdown at the UN Corral": At the UN General Assembly, Bush and Iran's Ahmadinejad had a face-to-face showdown without actually coming face-to-face. Bush also seemed to get some, uh, interesting reactions from representatives from certain countries during his speech.

Black History Month on TV

billy strayhornIn honor of Black History Month, I've made a non-conclusive list of some programs and specials that are coming up to celebrate black history in America. I'll be adding more shows to future posts as information becomes available, probably as we get closer to February. If you know of any I've missed, let me know in the comments and I'll add them to my next post.

Jennifer Hudson wins Golden Globe for Dreamgirls - BREAKING NEWS

DreamgirlsEx-Idol finalist Jennifer Hudson was awarded the 2007 Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture during tonight's award show. Even though I don't particularly like film adaptations of stage productions (don't even get me started on how much I hated Rent or The Producers), I did enjoy Dreamgirls and was blown away by Hudson's spectacular performance (both her singing and acting were incredible). She not only holds her own in a film full of major stars -- such as Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy, and Jamie Foxx -- she pretty much steals the show.

HBO's Life Support (or Queen Latifah for Prez) - TCA Report

Life Support for Queen Latifah(As a brief aside to those of you who have been reading these all day - TCA is the Television Critics Association, a twice yearly event that brings TV critics together with networks, show creators, and actors to find out all about upcoming shows, films, specials, and what have you. I'm a newbie to it all as well, so now you know. And knowing is half the battle.)

Life Support is somewhat based on a true story about a woman who contracts AIDS from her intravenous drug-using husband, and becomes an angry voice an activist in her community. She hands out condoms, doesn't pull punches, and is modeled after the sister of director Nelson George, who was even more outspoken than Queen Latifah, if you can believe it.

Who will make Barbara's 'Most Fascinating' list?

barbara waltersOnce again, ABC news woman Barbara Walters is hosting her list of The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2006. As usual, she's picking public figures from entertainment, politics, sports and business. ABC has released the names of six people on her list, including Patrick Dempsey (Grey's Anatomy), Anna Wintour, Andre Agassi, John Ramsey (JonBenet's father), televangelist Joel Osteen, and Terri Irwin. Last year's list included Jamie Foxx, Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Camilla Parker-Bowles, and Tom Cruise- who totally wigged out in 2005. The special airs on Tuesday, December 12th at 10 pm.

Whether you like her or not, I think Rachael Ray deserves to be on this year's list. 2006 was definitely her year. To that, I'd add Barack Obama (who should've been on her list in 2004) or Nancy Pelosi. And, probably Angelina Jolie.

Who else should make this list?

Jennifer Hudson signs with legendary producer

jennifer hudsonFinally! Former American Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson has signed a record deal with powerhouse producer Clive Davis, who also has Aretha Franklin and Barry Manilow, along with other Idol winners, on his label. Hudson was on the third season of American Idol, where she was the sixth contestant (in the top 12) voted off the show. There was a lot of outrage after Hudson was ousted-- even Elton John weighed in and called Americans racist for voting Hudson off the show. Apparently it took a role on Dreamgirls, alongside Beyonce, Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy--plus, some love from Oprah--to get Clive Davis' attention. I look forward to a Jennifer Hudson album. This girl has one hell of a voice, and a sassy attitude to match!

Previously on TV Squad

If you were one of the two readers who was wondering where I was last Sunday -- we didn't do a "previously on" post -- Here's the short answer: I was in a car on the road from Milwaukee to Detroit and wasn't around to do this post. But I'm back, so the summary is back.

Anyway, in case you've missed it -- perhaps you were in some massive traffic jams thanks to the Illinois DOT -- here are some highlights from the last week at TV Squad:

NBC to air original Miami Vice pilot

miami viceI never would have thought a show about a couple of narcs could have been so popular, but Miami Vice proved me wrong. Speaking of Miami Vice, I'm sure you've all heard of the upcoming film based on the popular television series starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as two undercover agents who mix t-shirts and suit jackets like it's no one's business. In celebration of the new flick, NBC will be re-broadcasting the original two-hour pilot as part of a three-hour event called Miami Vice: Undercover which will also include a featurette about the upcoming movie from director Michael Mann. Stars Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell will host the special, which airs on July 22 at 8 p.m.

You're entertaining, but I can't stand you

ed edd and eddieNathan Rabin posed an interesting question over at the Onion AV Club's blog. Are there people you admire as actors but hate as celebrities? The first example Rabin gives is Jamie Foxx, a very talented actor in his own right, but a rather annoying celebrity, too. Rabin mentions catching an awful clip of Foxx crooning some horrendous song from his new album on The Tonight Show. I would add that Foxx also has a cloying habit of belting out songs in the middle of interviews. It's really annoying, like those music majors in college who would have "singing conversations" with one another until you wanted to slowly excoriate both of them with a cheese grater.

This is a difficult one for me to answer, because I figure once the actor has done their performance, they're no longer of any real concern to me. However, that's more than a little pompous and it's not as if I'm impervious to annoyance. In fact, I'm constantly annoyed by things all the time. So, off the top of my head, I'm going to go with Robin Williams, who I neither admire as an actor nor as a celebrity, but he did make me laugh once, quietly, for about .5 seconds, sometime in 1983. I guess that's admirable.

So kids, who do you love to watch perform but want to strangle when you see them any other time? The floor is all yours.

Foxx and Longoria, unpredictably close

eva longoriaThe other day I caught a glimpse of the video for Jamie Foxx's song "Unpredictable." The video was rather goofy in its attempt to be sexy, so I had to change the channel before I choked to death from laughing too hard. I didn't find out until later that Eva Longoria is in the video. If I had know I would have at least watched it with the mute button on.  Of course, now that she's starred in this "steamy" video and has been seen palling around with Foxx, most recently at the Golden Globes, rumors are abound that the two are an item, though they both claim the accusations are false. I personally don't believe they're an item at all. I think Longoria was hired to come to the set and watch over the team of twelve-year-old boys Foxx has hired to write lyrics for him like "I'll be yo Tylenol just take me till you doze off." As long as he pays them a living wage, I'm totally cool with it.

Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls -- Video

Jennifer Hudson is looking great as one of the singers in Dreamgirls, a Broadway musical that Dreamworks is bringing to the big screen. The production company released some behind-the-scenes video on its website in which Jennifer is featured prominently. She plays Effie White, one in a trio of black female soul singers who cross over to the pop music charts in the early 1960s. While previous reports I cited back in November claimed that Hudson landed the lead in the movie, the behind-the-scenes video and the trailer tell a different story. I believe she is actually a supporting actor to big names like Beyonce Knowles, Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy. Hopefully Jen makes some good connections on this flick that lead to more opportunities in Hollywood. She was a feisty gal with a lot of fans when she was on Season 3 of American Idol.
