TV Week reports that the ratings for various holiday special repeats are
in decline as compared to last year. I'm curious as to why this is the case.
Network television is a free medium, and all but the most impoverished can afford some form of hardware to watch it. So why is viewership down? Is the recession dulling the holiday spirit? Are people selling their televisions in order to afford the mortgage?
I recall that someone once told me that the pro-wrestling industry always garners worse ratings during a recession. I always thought that was a strange statement to make, but there is some logic to it. Most pro-wrestling is on cable, which people have to pay for and is usually one of the first things to go when money gets tight. These holiday specials are on network TV.
The explanation in the article is the ubiquity of DVD and downloads. Nobody has to wait anymore to watch holiday programs. If this is the case, the television industry better step up their plans to change the medium before the viewership changes it for them.

(S07E09) What does it say about this special holiday episode of
Monk that the wittiest, most clever and memorable minute was when they unfurled the promo for the series return in 2009, using the music from
Magnum, P.I. and dubbing the show
Monk, P.I.? The USA marketing guys really hit a home run with that ad; it was brilliant.
Sadly, "Mr. Monk and the Miracle" was a sub-standard episode and hardly worth the moniker of "special." The mystery was rather simple -- about the most complicated piece of evidence was the hand print in the refrigerator -- and when Michael Badalucco (
The Practice) appeared as Leland's pharmacist, you kind of knew he was involved in some way. Yet while the show wasn't up to the best of Monk standards, it did have a moment or two to redeem it.

Since I dwell at the butt-end of Generation X, the 1962 animated holiday special Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol was never on my holiday TV plate. Perhaps it aired when I was youngster, but damned if I ever saw it. However, I always hear fond memories about the special from folks older than myself, so out of the goodness of my awesome heart I thought I'd let everyone know that the special will air on December 24 at 6:30am on Cartoon Network. That's early, I know, but what can you do? Fly around the Earth and reverse time like Superman? The show would still air at 6:30am even if you did do that, which is why he's Superman and you're not. Superman thinks these things through before he does them.
