While walking the streets of Manhattan, heading to the office early this morning, one of those giant open-air tour buses came flying by me as I crossed Sixth Avenue. Normally, since I see them everyday, I ignore them. But this one had a giant ad plastered across the side of it for Ed Begley Jr.'s green livin' reality show, and I couldn't help staring at it because it confused the hell outta me. Not because it's an inherently confusing ad, but because the fonts and text create an inherently confusing message.
Now, I'm no ad man, but am I the only one who sees the problem here?

A lot of you made your feelings heard about Antonio Ballatore winning this season of
Design Star by commenting on a
post I wrote earlier this week. The scruffy and tattooed LA. designer has tons of fans (just check out his
Facebook page), but a lot of HGTV watchers couldn't warm up to his unconventional designs and slacker dude persona.
Me? I'm a fan. The guy is obviously talented. I like his edgy designs and his laid back everyman attitude. His new show,
The Antonio Project, will definitely be something different for HGTV. It won't be for everybody, but it'll be refreshing to see a guy like Antonio host a show on a cable network mostly populated by dull yuppie types.
The HGTV Web site has a
preview of this Sunday's premiere of
The Antonio Project. The former set designer will have to redesign his own home in five days. By the looks of his house, the network is doing Antonio a favor. The place looks like a crime scene or an abandoned strip mall. Head after the jump to see a pic.

Season four of HGTV's
Design Star came to an end last night with the final two designers completing the biggest challenge in the show's history. Antonio, known for his edgy designs and laid-back attitude, and Dan, the talented and sweet-natured kid of the bunch, both redesigned an entire house in only 44 hours.
Both designers were cool and confident throughout the challenge, and their final products were nothing short of stunning. These guys know their stuff, and they deserved to make it to the end of the show, beating out nine other contestants for a shot at their own series on HGTV. But there could be only one winner.

1. Heroes. The show has problems, which have been
analyzed to death in the past several weeks, but it's still an entertaining hour of television. Great cast, and it's a fun ride. But a few things about the show bother me. One is the number of characters. Well, not the amount, per se, but how the show is structured with all of the characters. I'd rather see several characters sit out an episode than have ten characters all fighting for screen time in one episode. It's just too much. I also hate that there doesn't seem to be any real danger on the show, no real risk. I mean, if Hiro can go back in time, where's the real danger? If something can be done where a character can come back to life even after he is killed, where's the real risk? The show has to do something to change that in the next chapter.

Designer and architect Vern Yip is back for a third season of
HGTV's Deserving Design. The series will continue to focus on people with touching stories who are in need of some renovation assistance. Stories of this season include a couple who has taken in over sixty foster children (they get a much-needed new family room), a young woman diagnose with advanced breast cancer who needs some design assistance with her condo, and an eco-conscious couple who are in need of Vern's expertise.
I'm excited this show is back for a third season. I loved Vern Yip's designs when he was on
Trading Spaces. He always did affordable, modern, and clean-looking updates to the participants' homes. Plus this show isn't as flashy as
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. And there's no Ty Pennington screaming at you.
The new season starts tonight at 9 p.m. ET on HGTV. Will you be tuning in?

In this struggling real estate market,
HGTV has a new series that will focus on the newest trend in selling homes:
home staging. Viewers will get a first-hand look at the work of Canada's premier home-staging company Dekora. In each episode, audiences will see innovative ideas and techniques that Deroka uses to prep a home for a quick and profitable sale.
In the first episode, we'll meet a recently-divorced homeowner whose home is terribly dowdy and outdated (think wood paneling ... everywhere). Matthew, one of the show's professional home stagers, transforms the living room into an inviting, modern space.

TidalTV is a web-based video service. But it doesn't look anything like YouTube,
Joost, or even
Hulu. If anything, it looks like the service you get from your cable or satellite provider.
The TidalTV display is laid out like an electronic program guide with a video window in the corner. You can click on the video to bring up a full screen version. Or you can click on the program guide to flip channels. There's also an on-demand section if you don't want to watch the scheduled programming stream.

AOL TV releases their next ten
Sexiest Women of TV this week. I figured I would add some more of my own television hotties to the list. For my list, I decided to pay homage to some of the beautiful hosts of Do-It-Yourself television (networks like Food Network, Fine Living, and The Discovery Channel).
You may think that this list is way too obscure. But these men and women and totally hot and they teach us how to do stuff like make roasted asparagus or build rocking chairs or pick a color scheme for our homes. I think they deserve some attention.
Feel free to add your own favorite
Do-It-Yourself Hottie in the comments. (By the way, my picks are in no particular order. I just couldn't choose who I liked the best.)

HGTV has put out a call for men who have a special place in their home designed just for them. You know, that section of the house with a pool table, dart board, beer steins and several stuffed animal carcasses on the wall? These men and their men spaces will be featured on a new series called Man Land that apparently aims to celebrate stereotypical manliness. Other men like myself whose "man space" consist of nothing more than a Debbie Gibson album and a small tin of ginger snaps have been woefully overlooked. If I hadn't just come back from a manicure and didn't want to ruin the finish on my nails I'd be dialing up HGTV right now to complain.
We'll have to wait and see if this new series has anything worthwhile to offer. At the very least, it could be a nice change of pace from Queer Eye by actually celebrating the conditions these men choose as opposed to trying to change it.

(S01E01) Ed Begley, Jr. loves the environment. In fact, his love for Mother Earth often overshadows his acting career, and after watching HGTV's sneak preview of the new reality series Living with Ed, you get the feeling he's just fine with that.
The new series, which slips into its regular timeslot of Sundays at 10pm starting January 7, follows Ed and his wife Rachelle, who suffers her husbands tenacity with light sarcasm and good humor. She sums up her predicament quite well when she says, "I married into a lifestyle."
The "lifestyle" is one in which her husband cooks on a solar grill, hoses "smog dust" off the solar panels on his roof, times her while she's in the shower, and drives an electric car to the Academy Awards. Rachelle is not always happy with Ed valuing environment over aesthetics, complaining that he always picks out the ugliest environmentally-friendly things he can find. Whether Begley's lifestyle is overkill or not, I can't help but admire a man who actually practices what he preaches.

1. Just when I thought Dr. Phil was the most annoying person in the McGraw family comes...oh, wait, Dr. Phil is
still the most annoying person in the McGraw family, but the other night I was watching that HGTV special where they show the White House being decorated for the holidays, and it was hosted by Robin McGraw. She has all the personality of a used bar of soap.

Add Ed Begley Jr. to the ever-growing list of Hollywood stars with their own reality series. The former St. Elsewhere star, and current obsessed eco-nut committed environmentalist will be starring with wife and actress Rachelle Carson in a new series for HGTV called Living With Ed.
According to our friends at sister site AutoblogGreen, the new show (which premieres January 7th at 10:00 pm) will be set in the couple's entirely solar-powered, eco-friendly home. You'll be able to watch as Ed times his wife's shower with a stopwatch while gently chiding her over how many gallons of water she has wasted. You'll also be able to see how Begley rides a stationary bike in order to power his toaster. He will also be giving tips to the viewers on how to make their living areas more environmentally safe and energy efficient.

I wasn't really sure whether a move to
North Carolina was a good idea anyway, but I would have liked the dilemma. HGTV is giving away its latest Dream Home in
a live special this Saturday at 8 pm. I know this because I received an e-mail telling me to watch. This should tell
you two things: 1) I entered the contest, and 2) I didn't win. If I did win, I'd be one of
these people. This year, HGTV is
taking a different approach to announcing the winner. It will fly three final contestants to
this home for the live broadcast, where two people will learn
that they won $100,000 while the other person wins the home. I guess $100,000 is a nice consolation prize.
Sigh. I really didn't need that much living space, anyway. I'd probably lose my cats and my husband somewhere in the
5,000 square foot home.

You've read on TV Squad all about writer
Paul Davidson's run-ins
with celebrities in
Los Angeles. And today
you'll be able to watch him on television.
Davidson will appear on HGTV's
Design on a Dime today at
3pm (Eastern). Paul and his wife Jennifer had one of their rooms made into a "Stylish Home Office," and you
can see the results on today's show. If you miss it today, the episode will be repeated on May 27 at 10:30pm and May 28
at 2:30am.
I think now that Davidson is going to be on TV, he's going to become a celebrity himself, and
we'll be able to photograph him at the supermarket and gawk at him at trendy restaurants.
