Guillermo del Toro is a busy guy. Aside from helming the much anticipated
The Hobbit prequel films to the blockbuster
Lord of the Rings trilogy, he's got so many films on his schedule that he's practically booked through 2017. But what does that have to do with television, you say? Well, Variety wrote this big old long article about the esteemed del Toro, and one of the last topics discussed was the possibility of a third
Hellboy movie. The second didn't achieve the success domestically as the first film but has performed well.
What's kind of cool to consider is that buried in all that text is the gem that the studio is
possibly considering a TV series for Hellboy to keep him in front of his fanbase until such a film could be made. Creator Mike Mignola has developed tons of stories for Hellboy in the world of comics, and possibly even more for B.P.R.D. (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Development).

In an effort to promote
Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Universal Pictures is releasing a series of strange and humorous commercials. The first involved
James Lipton interviewing Hellboy. Not Ron Perlman, but the character of Hellboy himself. The second has Hellboy
meeting the title character from NBC's Chuck (and I love how Ron Perlman's character refers to Zachary Levi's character as "Chucky").
Hellboy is being distributed by Universal and since Universal and NBC are the same entity, I can understand how a crossover between the two is possible. I do wonder if there will be any promotion for the movie when the new season of
Chuck begins. Probably not, since the film will have already left the theaters. Still, a Ron Perlman appearance as any character on the show would be kind of cool.

Well now, if you were having trouble deciding between the competing biker shows in development, perhaps this news will tip your TV watching scales. FX has signed up Ron Perlman (Beauty And The Beast) to take over the role of Clay, president of the motorcycle club, and step-father to the main character Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam), in Kurt Sutter's Sons Of Anarchy.
The part was played by Scott Glenn in the pilot, but the powers that be chose to recast it after deciding to make the series more of a dark comedy. I'm not exactly sure what that means, because I could go for Glenn in a dark comedy, but adding Perlman does heighten my interest in the show, to be sure. If you just can't wait for the show to premiere to get your Perlman fix, he'll be showing up at your local multiplex with Hellboy II: The Golden Army in July.

With
casting finally complete, NBC can begin to think about how nice it would be to start work on
Kath & Kim if they had any writers. Based on an Australian hit by the same name, the series focuses on the relationship problems between a mother (Molly Shannon as "Kath") and her daughter (Selma Blair as "Kim"). The series was originally picked up a year ago but languished due to casting concerns. It was deemed that the main characters had to be cast perfectly for this to work.
Meanwhile, Molly Shannon has stayed busy with a brilliant turn on
Pushing Daisies while Selma Blair wowed geeks across the world as Liz Sherman in
Hellboy, a role she will reprise in the sequel. Now they'll be able to come together and try to be the most delightfully dysfunctional mother-daughter duo since Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. Hell, if it can get half the critical acclaim that
Gilmore Girls did,
Kath & Kim will be off to a great start.

The second installment in the Hellboy animated movies for Cartoon Network will air at 7 p.m. on March 17. Hellboy: Blood and Iron borrows heavily from Wake the Devil, the second Hellboy paperback, according to the series' production blog. This second installment was originally envisioned as an origin story, but that concept was too close to the theatrical release, so a (mostly) new story was developed.
The third and final installment, Hellboy: The Phantom Claw is still in the script stage, and according to the production blog, will have more of a "mad scientist/weird technology" vibe, making it quite different than the previous two movies.
As mentioned before, actors from the Hellboy movie also provide voices for the animated version, including Ron Pearlman, Selma Blair and Doug Jones. Original Hellboy creator and Hellboy movie co-writer Mike Mignola also co-wrote the scripts for the animated versions.

Samuel L. Jackson, Ron Perlman, and Kelly Hu have signed on to voice characters in the upcoming animated series,
Afro Samurai on Spike. Jackson is also executive producing the project, which is based on a graphic novel by Takashi Okazaki about a black Samurai's quest to find the man who killed his father. Jackson will voice the lead character, while Perlman will voice the villain he seeks. Perlman, by the way, is the guy who played the title character in
Hellboy and the Beast in the television series,
Beauty and the Beast. Hu plays Okiku, a friend from the samurai's past. She played the female version of Wolverine in
X2: X-Men United. The RZA is creating original music for the series.
Spike has ordered five episodes of
Afro Samurai. They begin airing January 4th.

You know those two
Hellboy movies
being created for Toonami? The first movie,
Sword of Storms, premieres in three days (October 28 at 9:30 pm), and if you're a purist who prefers Mike Mignola's comic version over the film adaptations, you'll be happy to know that these animated movies will be based, both in story and aesthetic, on the original comic books moreso than the live-action film. Actors from the film version will be providing the voices of the characters, but Mignola, who co-wrote and executive produced the movies, had a strong hand in this adaptation, according to Tad Stones, who co-directed the movies along with Phil Weinstein. The second movie,
Hellboy: Blood and Iron, is slated for 2007. I've placed a trailer for
Sword of Storms after the jump.

Listen up, fans of comic books and comic book movies: two animated movies that will serve as continuations of both the
Hellboy comic and the feature film are slated to appear on Cartoon Network's Toonami block in 2006 and 2007. The first, titled
Hellboy: Sword of Storms, will air on Toonami October 28 at 9:30 pm. The second movie,
Hellboy: Blood and Iron, is set for sometime in 2007. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm really excited about this, or rather, I would be if I actually read those comic books or ever saw the live-action movie, which I haven't. But hey, I relay this information to you out of pure, unconditional love. Damn straight. The new animated film will also include several people involved with the live-action feature film: Ron Pearlman, Selma Blair and Doug Jones will voice their characters from the original movie. Screenwriter Mike Mignola, who created
Hellboy and co-wrote the first movie has also co-written the animated versions, and director Guillermo Del Toro will serve as creative producer along with Mignola.

I've been on a comic-book kick lately, waiting for the next issue of
Y: The Last Man (good stuff), so I checked out the online premiere of Sci-Fi's
The Amazing Screw-On Head. The 22-minute pilot episode features the voice talents of Paul Giamatti, David Hyde Pierce, Patton Oswalt, and Molly Shannon.
The combination of comedy and adventure reminds me of
The Venture Bros., but while
VB is an acquired taste for some,
Screw-On Head seems like it could easily appeal to a larger audience. A lot of the story is taken straight from the comic, but since it was a one-shot (a stand-alone story) there have been a few well-done changes to allow the show room to grow to a full series. I'd love to see this on a regular basis! I definitely recommend it...
Watch the pilot now, or
read a little more about the comic and then
watch it (seriously,
watch it). Remember to fill out
the survey after you see it so that SciFi can decide whether or not to pursue the series.
Emperor Zombie: Patience, darling? Do I have the permission to let Head stake you if it means world domination?
Patience, his vampiress: Yes, my love!
[whispers to Head] ... Nooooo.
