Harper's Island: Whap (series premiere)

harpers island

(S01E01)
Look, I'm going to just cut to the chase: You should be watching this show. Well, let me add a caveat to that. If you don't mind watching people get eviscerated, you should be watching this show. I put this on my DVR because it was new, but I didn't know much about it. Just watching the pilot, though, has got me totally hooked.

I love horror movies, and this is basically a thirteen-episode horror movie. It doesn't pull any punches either. Harper's Island isn't like most TV shows, where minor characters get killed off and the main cast always manages to survive: at least one character will be killed off each week. In the pilot episode, we had two deaths. Suffice it to say, they did not go quietly in their sleep.

Warning: Spoilers about who dies in the pilot are ahead.

Will Harper's Island usher in a new way of programming television shows?

Harper's IslandBack in January, I mentioned that I am going to give Harper's Island a shot. I've been a little antsy about getting involved in yet another continuing drama (and one that could be canceled at anytime), but this was filmed and is being marketed as a limited-run series. Somewhere between a mini-series and a regular season, and that makes me feel a little better about taking the time to watch it.

Of course, one could argue that shows like Kidnapped and Daybreak were also shows that were designed for a limited run, but NBC and ABC didn't market those shows the way that CBS is marketing this one. The ads for Harper's Island make it very clear that it's only going to be on for a short time. In the TV ads, they're very specific about the dates the show will run (April 9 to July 2), and the people behind the show are calling it "an event." It's a smart way to do it, and the TV ads have actually been clever and well-done.

Sure, I'll give Harper's Island a shot - VIDEO

Harper's IslandI'm a big fan of mysteries, but it's hard to watch them on television. I'm talking about the onslaught of serial TV shows that we've seen the past couple of years. For every Lost or Heroes we've had, we've had an infinite number of shows that didn't make it, such as Daybreak and Kidnapped. It's easy to get frustrated and disillusioned when you start to watch a continuing drama and the show doesn't even get past its first 13 episodes. ABC pulled Daybreak after a handful of episodes and then put the rest online. NBC did the same with Kidnapped (it was also on Saturday nights, which didn't work out either).

But I'm going to give Harper's Island a shot.

TV Land plots a Harry Hamlin & Lisa Rinna reality show

Harry and LisaThere are two things that I find disturbing about the news that there's a reality show in the works for married actors Harry Hamlin and Lisa Rinna for TV Land. Number one, do we really need another show biz couple exposing their personal lives for the cameras? Number two, why is TV Land getting away from celebrating TV history by broadcasting great old shows to do banal entertainment like this kind of unscripted drivel?

Are audiences really clamoring for more of this stuff? I know I'm not, and I don't know anyone else who is! Seriously, this is not reality TV. There's nothing real about it except that they're using their real names. (Yes, those are their real names!)

Harry Hamlin heads to Harper's Island

Hamlin dancingWhen CBS presented their upfront last May, one of the more intriguing dramas was a murder mystery/slasher film/whodunit about a wedding party on a Seattle island. It was called Harper's Island and projected for mid-season. The preview played like a cross between Ten Little Indians and Twin Peaks to me, and I liked what I saw. I certainly plan on giving it a try when it shows up on CBS.

It's still slated for early 2009, only now the actor playing the groom's loud, fun-loving and duplicitous uncle is going to be Harry Hamlin. He has been added to the Harper's Island cast as Marty.

Dancing with the Stars goes on the road

drew lachey; dancing with the starsDancing with the Stars is getting a roadshow. Celebrities paired with real dancers will tour 38 U.S. cities, starting with San Diego on Dec. 19th. Celebrity contestants include Drew Lachey, Joey Lawrence, Willa Ford, Harry Hamlin (what?!?), Lisa Rinna and Joey McIntyre.

Why would anyone want to see this live? Absent-mindedly watching this on a Tuesday night is one thing... but actually paying cash to see mediocre dancers? American Idol does the same thing-- it sends mediocre singers on an American tour each year. I think the difference is the demogaphics.

Would you pay to watch Dancing with the Stars if they visited your town?

Dancing with the Stars: Week 3 Results show

Harry and Ashly(S03E06) After all the craziness of performance night, this figured to be an interesting show. Of course, they covered all of the rule violations hubbub, and there was one thing that stood out to me.

This notion of, 'We didn't know we were breaking the rules' boggles me. How do you not know? Especially if the rule is 'No Lifts.' That's not hard to remember. It doesn't even require higher math. Just don't do lifts. It was good for them to have Len go through the basic rules. They should have done that on one of the earlier results shows.

Dancing with the Stars: Week 2

Dancing with the Stars Harry and Ashley with the laughing yogi(S03E03) Back again, with more dancing, and less Tucker. The big story this week leading up to the competition was whether Mario was being honest about his dance history. I think he was down playing his experience somewhat, but it really doesn't matter. At the end of the day, he's in the competition, and everyone is going to have to deal with it. And the dance is just a part of what gets a competitor through week after week, as we know. That said, on with the show. This week the celebrity men will be dancing the quickstep, while the celebrity women tackle the mambo.

Dancing with the Stars: Week 1 (season premiere)

Edyta Silwinska and Joey Lawerence(S02E01) It's hard to make a hit show, and it's hard to predict what show will be a hit. When I first heard the idea for Dancing with the Stars before the first season I thought, 'Why would anyone watch that?' Yet, here we are starting the third season and ABC has a bona fide hit on their hands. And I'm watching it. Go figure.

Tom Bergeron and Samantha Harris return as hosts. And if I can go off-topic for just a minute, I have to mention Breakfast Time. I've been a Bergeron fan since he hosted the best morning show that ever was. When Tom goes into the Hall of Fame he should be wearing his Breakfast Time cap. That said, they have eleven new stars ready to dance it up. Celebrity men danced the Cha Cha Cha while the women did the Fox Trot. Here are the couples and their results.

The new Dancing with the Stars cast is announced

Dancing with the StarsThe big news on Good Morning America this morning wasn't about the UK terror plot or the cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah. The big news was... drumroll please... the announcement of the new cast of Dancing with the Stars!

Thaaat's right, kiddies... the new group of has-beens, never-wases and out-of-place sports legends is now set to strut their stuff on the dance floor this fall, and this group is a doozy. We already knew that MSNBC's Tucker Carlson is participating, and there had been rumors that soon-to-be Hall of Fame running back Emmit Smith was going to be there, so those two aren't a big surprise. But we also get to see Jerry Springer, Joey ("Whoa!") Lawrence, Vivica A. Fox, Harry Hamlin (probably glomming on wife Lisa Rinna's success last year), Willa Ford, Monique Coleman of High School Musical, Sara Evans, Mario Lopez, and model and ex-Mrs. Barker Shanna Moakler (probably in the spot that was reserved for Beth Ostrosky).

Looks like it's going to be an interesting season. Maybe Emmit Smith will surprise everyone and win it all. Cowboy fans must be hiding their heads in their hats right now.

The Five: Worst TV dads

Bad dad Aaron EchollsNot all television dads are the epitome of fatherhood. There are plenty of dads out there in TV land who, frankly, would rather be somewhere else. So, in the fine tradition of opposing viewpoints, we present the five worst TV dads.

Aaron Echolls (Veronica Mars):  Sure, to the movie-watching public he was known as a class-A actor who was kind to his fans. But, to his family, he was known as an adulterer with a violent temper who beat on his son Logan. Oh, he also murdered Veronica Mars' best friend Lilly and the abusing boyfriend of his daughter Trina (Update: well, almost). On the bright side, he has a really nice head of hair for someone his age.

Nicolette Sheridan, Michael Bolton engaged

nicolette sheridan michael bolton engagedNicolette Sheridan, also known as Edie Britt on Desperate Housewives, is engaged to singer Michael Bolton. A rep for Sheridan says Bolton proposed over the weekend in the Bahamas, and the couple will share exclusive details of the proposal to Access Hollywood. Sheridan and Bolton dated back in the 1990s, but went their separate ways. Sheridan married and divorced L.A. Law star Harry Hamlin, and recently broke off an engagement to Nick Soderblom. She and Bolton reconnected over Christmas.
