As I started putting this list together it occurred to me, "Holy crap, there is a lot of good TV this summer." The summer used to be the time when my VCRs cooled their worn out heads after nine months of hard work. And now I find myself needing the Tivo and the DVR to keep up with everything. That's progress!

And here we go. If you work on a network television series, one of the worst things you can hear is that your show is going 'on hiatus'. Sure, every once in a while that just means that the show is taking a little break. But more often than not it's the PC way for executives to tell you that the ratings numbers suck out loud and you need to start looking for a new gig.
With that in mind, Fox has placed
Justice and
Happy Hour on an early hiatus. Early because it was expected that most of the network's shows would get a little break when the baseball playoffs take over the schedule. But
Happy Hour and
Justice will be starting their break early, being replaced by repeats of
'Til Death and
House. Right now, the Fox website says that
Happy Hour will return Nov.2, with no word on when
Justice is supposed to resume. Of course, this makes the TV Squad contest to pick the first show to get canceled a whole big ball of fun. We'll have to wait and see if these shows are officially canceled. Stay tuned.

Wow, what a crazy night for television.
At 8, we not only have the season premiere a recap episode of Grey's Anatomy but we also have the season premieres of My Name Is Earl and The Office. Plus, CBS has a new Survivor at 8, while FOX has new eps of 'Til Death and Happy Hour (if you are, um, watching those shows). Then, at 9, FOX has a new Celebrity Duets, the Grey's season premiere on ABC, the season premiere of CSI on CBS, and a new Deal Or No Deal on NBC.
But wait! At 10, we have the season premiere of ER on NBC, while CBS has the series premiere of Shark and ABC has the season premiere of Six Degrees. Jeez. I tink everyone's TiVo is going to explode at once (and we haven't even mentioned PBS and what's on cable).
What are you watching tonight?

(S01E01) Been there, done that. If you're looking for our review of the series premiere of FOX's new comedy
Happy Hour you won't find it here. This is just to point you over to some earlier posts we did on the show. For instance, you can see what we thought of the comedy's
preview screener as well as the
official "reviewable" copy that came in the
accompanying press kit. Will be be covering this show in the future? Er, um, well . . . Hey, look at the time! It's getting late and I should really be getting home.

If you really sat down and looked at the numbers, you could probably count on one hand the number of successful live-action situation comedies FOX has had on its schedule over the last twenty years. Of course there were the three-camera, live audience sitcoms Married. . .with Children and That 70's Show as well as the single-camera comedies The Bernie Mac Show and Malcolm in the Middle. Also add the critically acclaimed Arrested Development to that mix, even though it was canceled after three seasons.
Yet, no matter how many unsuccessful comedies they have put on the air, the network brass still continues to try and find the right combination of talent and writing to give one of them a multiple season run. The brass is going to have to go back to the drawing board, because Happy Hour (premiering Thursday at 8:30 ET) does not have the right combination. In fact, I'm not too sure if it has a combination at all.

As the fall television season draws ever closer, we continue to receive press kits from the networks. This time around it's for FOX's new comedy Happy Hour, which premieres on Thursday, September 7th at 8:30. This particular kit lacks a little in one aspect, while it shines in the other. Let's take a look, shall we . . .

Matthew Gilbert has an interesting article in The Boston Globe, about the new season of shows and how TV shows are now more complicated than ever (but that's a good thing). Not just returning shows like 24 and Lost, but new complex series like DayBreak, Kidnapped, and Vanished.
One page that the print edition of the Globe has that the web site doesn't (at least I couldn't find it) is Gilbert's grades for all the new shows. Quick summary: he thinks the best new shows are The Nine, Studio 60, Heroes, Six Degrees, Smith, The Knights of Prosperity, and Justice. The worst are Happy Hour, Twenty Good Years, and Help Me Help You.

It's time to fire up the TV Squad polls again and see what our fine readers are thinking. We know not all of you are keen on leaving us comments, so why not let you easily submit to a poll?
This time we're focusing on
the new shows FOX has up their sleeves for this fall. Got any you're looking forward to in particular? Rather than have you choose your favorite of the bunch, we'll let you pick as many as you like. We'll update this post with the poll results in about a week, so check back then.

Last, but certainly not least, we are giving you a preview of the shows that FOX has planned for the fall season. We've already discussed
ABC,
CBS, and
NBC's new shows. Let's just say that our TiVos are going to be working overtime this fall.
For FOX, we're covering comedies
Happy Hour,
'Til Death, and
The Winner. And the dramas are
Justice,
Standoff,
Vanished, and
The Wedding Album. The network was kind enough to send us the DVD screeners but, since we can't technically "review" them, we're just going to give you a short preview and our initial thoughts.

According to
The Futon Critic, FOX ordered six episodes of
The Winner, starring
The Daily Show correspondent Rob Corddry, effectively wiping Comedy Central clean of all Corddrys (little bro Nate is on Aaron Sorkin's new show at NBC).
The Winner is about a successful man who looks fondly back at 1994, when he was 32 and a slacker living at his parents' home. It was co-created by
The Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. It's a bummer to see Corddry go, but hopefully that means we'll get to see more John Hodgman.
FOX also picked up 13 episodes of
Happy Hour, a comedy that sounds like a modern-day
Odd Couple about two thirty-something roommates.
Not surprisingly, FOX also has renewed
The O.C. for a fourth season. Those crazy Orange County kids will be going off to college, but it appears the writers may be breaking with teen-angst drama tradition and sending them to different colleges in
different towns. FOX also picked up 13 more episodes of
The Loop and more of
The War at Home, though it's not clear how many episodes it ordered.
